The interesting thing about darkness is that once your eyes become adjusted to it, you can see well enough to move around. Once you start moving around, you'll eventually find a light source that beckons you out of the black.
The secret is to not hold still.

For Me Again Monday - something new, a photo processed in a new way.
One of the best things about getting up high is the view one can sometimes get of cloud inversions - fog to most people. This image was captured on a recent trip to Strathcona Provincial Park, which is the wild heart of Vancouver Island.

The sight of fresh snow in Yosemite Valley is one of the most magical scenes of nature. For years I have been chasing a breaking storm shot right around sunrise or sunset. As always the mountains are unpredictable and micro weather systems seem to have a mind of their own.
With a slew of storms pouring down from the Pacific Northwest, there was a high chance Yosemite Valley was going to receive several inches of snow. Aaron, Zach, and I decided to head out midnight for the valley in hopes of getting the storm breaking at sunrise. For most of the drive it was quick and straightforward but once we gained elevation the rain turned into snow. Soon we were reduced to driving at slow speeds through the slick and windy roads but the white beauty outside made it all the worthwhile.
We arrived in time for sunrise but the storm refused to break. Soon it became apparent the storm was picking up again as large pellets of snow bombarded us.
After spending some time grabbing breakfast we headed out for the valley again and this time the storm began breaking for real. We initially made a spot near El Capitan as we spotted sunlight bursting through the storm clouds and then we made our way over to Valley View. Upon arrival much of the peaks were still shrouded in clouds but a short wait later El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks began peaked out. Soft filtered light and fresh snow combined for a breathtaking scene.

This bee is emerging satisfied that he has gotten as much as he can from this Rose of Sharon bloom. I am happy to report that I now have way more bees in this bush than I do of those pests, the Japanese Beetles.

The first day out of the year looking to photograph Kingfishers.
The day started off frosty but quickly clouded over and began to rain lightly.
It wasn't long before the first male Kingfisher turned up and made its first dive for a Fish.
This is the moment it breaks the surface with a Fish and climbs back up to the perch.
With the weather being so dull and grey, what better time to practice this sort of shot. Not really sure what it is, long exposure/minimalist/fine art? If someone could inform me.
This is the second image I've tried this on and it was quite hard work, it also makes me realize my need for grad filters if I'm going to try more of this. This shot probably took close to half an hour to take as I took 3 exposures to blend (no filters) and a test exposure. The last image of this type I tried I was advised by someone to try to blur the horizon a bit, I've tried on this image but I didn't have a clue what I was doing. (any advise on that would be appreciated).
Anyway, this is what I've come up with.
Shot with d3100, 18-55mm kit lens and Haida 10 stop filter.
As always any advise/constructive crit is more than welcomed.
Cheers,
Gary.
Edit: I wouldn't mind your thoughts on the smaller rock, I didn't know if to leave it in to guide you through the shot or get rid as it distracts (which would ruin my title :) ). Cheers
New York City operates the largest steam system in the world, with 105 miles of steam pipe running beneath the streets. Whether from maintenance repairs or outside water failing on the hot pipes, steam can often be found rising up through manholes covers or temporary chimneys. Combine this with some rain and lots of wind after dark, and you get an awesome atmosphere for photos.
