Sunset light graces the rock formations of Fantasy Canyon in the Uinta Basin. A native American tradition holds that demons emerged from the underworld here with a plot to take over the surface world. Their plan was thwarted by the north god who sent snow and cold weather that froze the demons, leaving them in strange contorted shapes forever.

Geologists suggest the formations are residual erosional deposits from sandstones to the east (left in the picture) which were deposited into softer silts and clays on the shore of ancient Lake Uinta. Recent erosion has exposed the sandstones as the softer rock is washed away.

This was actually my first morning in Alberta during my winter trip this past January. Joined by a couple friends, we headed out to this spot in complete darkness, other than our headlamps (which annoyingly really only illuminated my breath in the cold winter air). After a quick snowshoe and a really slow (and frustrating) post-holing process we arrived at this incredible location, where we waited. And waited. And waited.

Eventually, the sun rose behind a thick bank of clouds, illuminating the landscape. Unfortunately for us, we could barely even see castle mountain, and it seemed that we’d get no great light. Eventually the tummy growls were loud enough to motivate us to head back to the car.

Within 60 seconds of starting our walk back, I noticed the colour temperature changing on the snow to become warmer. I stopped in my tracks and looked at Castle Mountain - the clouds had broken, and warm light was just starting to make it through to the landscape.

Andrew - “Oh man. Look behind you.”

Scott - “Oh no. Should we go for it?”

Eric - “I’M GOIN’ FOR IT!!!”

Everyone - *runs*

Once again, a scramble to set up and get shooting. The light lasted less than 5 minutes before going back to a completely overcast mess. Thankfully, for that 5 minute period we were all right where we needed to be. Sometimes it pays to hike slowly!

This Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae marcellina) is the first emergence in our yard so this guy will be forever #1. The cassia tree that Gorboy gave me a month ago gets visited constantly. Today we have about 8 chrysalis and probably another 15-20 cats in various stages in the yard. I recently bought more host plants because the cassia tree is quickly disappearing. There is a pool of water in the center of the flower, which, to me makes the flower look like it's emerging from the water.

Pre-photography days I would be in absolute climate heaven right now - this summer here in Bondi has blatantly ignored the fact that we headed in to Autumn 6 weeks ago...every day glorious sunshine, balmy calm water, endless blue skies, forecast also for the next 7 days is exactly the same- and its driving me nuts!!!

The surf, the clouds, the wind, the rain, the storms have not been seen in months now. Photographically speaking I am stuck right in the middle of the Saragasso Sea and totally in the Doldrums.

So thank heaven for the archive and I can wander down in to the vaults and play with my ocean files and storm files which always cellar beautifully.

I had Andrea ask me on Instgram if the guy was okay and he really was - he rode it all the way right to shore and emerged safe. The surfers at Bronte(as opposed to Bondi) are a very seasoned and local bunch who really know their stuff and I am always in awe of their skills.

Garden pond update...

Two more common darters emerged from their nymph stage today, but sadly only one made it as yet again one failed to master flying quickly enough and landed right back in the pond. I managed to lift it out of the water but there was too much damage to its wings for it to fly again.
