Santuary of Our Lady of Snows. Brotas, Portugal

Shrine of Our Lady of Snows, or Church of Sprout, is located in Brotas, Mora, District of Évora, Portugal, and is a sixteenth century building, founded shortly before 1424 as insignia of the Order of Avis.
In the "altar of the souls" of the Shrine of Our Lady of Brotas there is an image of the Virgin, carved in ivory, with about an inch in size.
LEGEND of Our Lady of Brotas
Legend has it that walking a keeper of cows in the pasture with his herd of cows fell to a river breaking a leg. He was about the young shepherd to slaughter the cow, since it ceased to have any value when the Virgin appeared to him who told him: "Build a shrine in this place in my devotion to your cow will be healed." Once there the keeper of cows carved the image of the knife and when it was his devotion that the cow was alive and healthy.
Soon there called the people who when faced with this miracle came together to build the church, later converted into a shrine popular devotion. It was also the people who demanded that the iconographic representation of Our Lady of Brotas passed also included a cow, the cow that evokes the legend.
The temple maintains the structure and silhouette characteristic of a structural reform of the XVII Century plus ornamental elements of the eighteenth century.
The front apilastrada of sharp populism, consists of an illuminated eyepiece quadrifoliado gable, surmounted by a pediment with winding, 1749, and the Bonfires acrotérios pyriform masonry.
Contains tiles, painting, sculpture, embroidery (collection of dresses for processions of Mrs. Sprout, embroidered in gold).
Wonderful tile, needing for restoration work.
Was classified as a Public Interest in 1956.

the cult of Our Lady of Snow Sprout is documented since the 12th century. but the earliest traces of this temple dating from the 15th century.
It is a cult that was known and followed around the world after the Portuguese discoveries. In Brazil, Latin America, and even in India and the Philippines there are shrines to the cult of Our Lady of Brotas
Our flickr friend Joel's Goa Pics says: 'There is a church dedicated to Our Lady of Brotas at the Anjediva island, under the jurisdiction of Goa (India). The panoramic island (now deserted, except for the naval presence) was where Vasco da Gama was known to have landed first in Goa. It was the last place surrendered when Goa was liberated from the Portuguese by the Indian Army in December 1961'.

The silk used for the skin is very thin and much finer than a human hair, you only can see it is hand stitched when you check the embroidery very closely.

Part of a top grade Chinese handmade silk embroidery art piece, the boys and whole background are all hand embroidered with fine and dense silk threads.

To provide proper storage for the textile and embroidery collections at the Shalva Amiranashvili Art Museum in Tbilisi. The collection, consisting of items made between the 12th and the 19th centuries, includes objects embroidered with gold and silver and decorated with precious stones. There are over 5,000 pieces in the collection, including ecclesiastical and heirloom objects, many from Georgia, but also from Persian and Byzantine origin. The project will also digitize the inventory, and initiate conservation activities.
This bowl was hand painted with red, blue and green stained glass paints.

I found this sampler in an antique store in Saskatoon. It is a sampler from a Hutterite Colony. There are many of those colonies in the prairie provinces.
