Desert adapted Elephants are found in only two locations in the world; in Mali and in the northern reaches of Namibia. In Namibia one can find them along the dried up riverbeds of the Kaololand and as here, in the Damaraland area.

In May, after the rains, the desert blooms for a short period of time and the elephants don't have to go far for a meal although the nearby river has already ceased to flow

Quite a small bull wandering around happily and grazing on the grass.

I love the landscape around Satara because it makes it so much easier to spot game than in the south of the park.

We spent an hour watching a herd of elephants wallowing in, what had become, a very muddy waterhole. Suddenly one sprayed mud over another, whether out of anger or kindness we would't know.

This calf was just 21 days old that day, he was playing with his mother who was taking bath in the river backwater...

An African elephant cow eating from a small tree. Taken at the Glen Afric Lodge.

Seen at the Pinnawela elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka, these two elephants were preening and touching each other all the time... it must be love !

Nearly got ran over by an elephant to snag this shot, I'm pretty sure she wasn't gonna let a man with a camera halt her progress. What a fantastic experience to be so close to these amazing creatures.

At a focal length of 37mm you can appreciate how close I was to get this shot.

Riding an Elephant, another item ticked off my bucket list :-)
