Bornean Pygmy Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) - Danum Valley, Malaysia
Looks like today is world elephant day so in honor of that here is one of my few shots of an elephant. I was lucky to see my fair share of elephants during my time in Borneo but I didn't get many photographs. On this occasion there was an group of elephants 3-4 right off the side of the road, we could hear them but couldn't see them. I crouched down and waited and before too long, this little calf trotted out, I say little but he was already quite large. He stayed on the road for maybe 10-15 seconds but I was able to get a few shots at him. Despite being Bornean pygmy elephants they were still quite large and impressive animals, and always a pleasure to be around.
The wool felt for this elephant came from Winterwood Steiner Inspired Toys (http://www.winterwoodtoys.com.au) and the pattern is from their book , Karin Neuschutz's Sew Soft Toys:

Driving through the Chobe National Park,Botswana ,we saw a herd of elephants just ahead of us & to one side of the road. So we stopped the vehicle & they stopped moving too. Obviously a bit wary of us ,they hesitated before crossing the road. The little `uns stayed very close to their mothers....almost being trodden on !!!

Elephant at São Paulo's public zoo.
In 2004 more than 60 animals were killed at the São Paulo's public zoo. Among them, there was a female elephant who lived together with this one above. Since then, he has lived alone. No wonder the essence of this photo is so sad and melancholic.
The investigation never found a suspect of the killings and the police closed the case for the lack of evidences.

What instantly grabbed me about this was the view of the Plains Zebra and Thomson's Gazelle in the "window" created by the elephant's trunk and its front left leg. I waited until it picked up some dirt to add a bit of movement to the shot rather than settle for a static image.
A family of elephants gets together to share a few drinks in Hwange. The large bull has a broken tusk, probably from a previous battle, and the baby gets a little help with it's drink from one of the older members of the group.

Taken at Goas Waterhole in Etosha National Park Namibia. We had got to the watering hole in the afternoon and found a troop of elephants there. When they were leaving the watering hole we realised our 4x4 by directyly in their path. After some very nifty reversing (by Tony not me!) we got out of the way but this guy was not impressed and we had to leave the waterhole pretty sharply!
