It lacks the element of focus I like to have in my work - but it's the only picture I have of that quintessential Key West spectacle: the drag queen with the wind blowing up his skirt. Owing to the auto-"focus" lag, the shutter just missed an angle that was more than I could have comfortably shared with you the viewer.
Para Gaudí un elemento clave en su forma de concebir la estructura era el arco parabólico o catenario, también llamado funicular de fuerzas, que utilizó como elemento más adecuado para soportar las presiones. Mediante la simulación de distintos polifuniculares experimentales determinó la forma óptima de la estructura para soportar las presiones de los arcos y las bóvedas, primero en la cripta de la Colonia Güell y después en la Sagrada Familia. Desarrolló un modelo a escala de cordeles entretejidos de los que suspendían pequeños sacos de perdigones que simulaban los pesos; así determinaba el funicular de fuerzas y la forma de la estructura. Por tanto, a partir del estado de cargas, simulados con los saquitos de perdigones, determinó experimentalmente la forma idónea de la estructura —que él llamó «estereostática»—, que reproducía la estructura óptima para trabajar a tracción y que, invirtiéndola, se obtenía la estructura idónea para trabajar a compresión.
Gaudí concibió el interior de la Sagrada Familia como si fuese la estructura de un bosque, con un conjunto de columnas arborescentes divididas en diversas ramas para sustentar una estructura de bóvedas de hiperboloides entrelazados. Las columnas las inclinó para recibir mejor las presiones perpendiculares a su sección; además, les dio forma helicoidal de doble giro (dextrógiro y levógiro), como en las ramas y troncos de los árboles. Por el conjunto de elementos aplicados en las columnas —inclinación, forma helicoidal, ramificación en varias columnas más pequeñas— consiguió una sencilla forma de soportar el peso de las bóvedas sin necesidad de contrafuertes exteriores.

15 mobiliers urbains mis à disposition par JC Decaux, sont utilisés pour présenter une sélection d’images donnant à voir une interprétation de la thématique des quatre éléments à travers l’histoire de l’art, ainsi que les réponses des artistes invités, à la question « quel élément vous correspond le plus ? ». S’appuyant sur la théorie des quatre humeurs popularisée par Hippocrate, la sélection associe les quatre éléments qui composent le cosmos et le corps humain aux quatre saisons et aux quatre humeurs de l’homme :
- sanguin : air, printemps, blanc, rouge ;
- colérique : feu, été, jaune, orange, rouge vif ;
- mélancolique : terre, automne marron, violet, noir ;
- flegmatique : eau, hiver, vert pâle, opale.

Fifth Element is one of the movies I’ll watch over and over again.
I’ve been working on this taxi from the movie for quite a long time and finished it today. Difficulty in getting the right parts (and learning a few things about some popular Bricklink sellers), a mishap that caused me to order a new set of stickers, plus this is a fragile model and has come apart more than once. But it’s done and as soon as I find the minifigs I bought to go with it…

One aspect that I love about almost any art-form is the 'element of chance' ... the unexpected texture in a batik, the random decision when making a mosaic that turns out to be a key feature, and the unexpected subject matter in a photograph.
I'd been sitting outside in my garden to eat lunch and I spotted a spider that appeared as if it was dangling in mid-air.
So I thought it'd make a cool shot to focus in as close as I could and align the spider above the streetlight or over my neighbour's roof. The auto focus took a bit of convincing to highlight the spider.
It wasn't until I downloaded the shots that I'd taken that I realized how the lens had picked up the finesse of the fine strands (that I hadn't seen) that make up the fine art of the spider's web against the clear blue sky and the darkness of the faded Buddleia, and I liked it so much that I cropped the image to include the spider's lunch, but not the spider itself.

Depois de ouvir 24 especialistas em terras-raras – 17 elementos químicos presentes em minérios e utilizados para vários produtos como lentes de câmeras, discos rígidos de computador e telas de celulares – a Subcomissão Temporária de Terras-Raras aprovou (10/09) o relatório apresentado pelo senador Luiz Henrique (PMDB-SC), e segue para a deliberação da Comissão de Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovação, Comunicações e Informática (CCT).
- Nós já estamos trabalhando no sentido de transformar essas recomendações em projeto de lei, que poderá depois ser apensado ao que tramita na Câmara, se ele vier a ser aprovado anteriormente, para que tenhamos um marco regulatório que permita ao Brasil se capacitar nessa área – disse Luiz Henrique.
O relator agradeceu ao presidente da CCT, senador Zeze Perrella (PDT-MG), presente à reunião, pelo apoio ao debate do assunto e a criação da Subcomissão, que permitiu o desenvolvimento dos debates. O senador Perrella, por sua vez, destacou o trabalho desenvolvido pelo grupo e elogiou a dedicação dos senadores Luiz Henrique e Aníbal Diniz (PT-AC) à realização de um trabalho pioneiro.
As terras-raras não são raras no mundo. Poucos países detêm a tecnologia de sua extração, produção e transformação em bens de consumo. Atualmente, a China é a maior produtora de terras-raras. Também estão crescendo nesse mercado os Estados Unidos, a Rússia e o Canadá. O Brasil tem uma geologia favorável, mas ainda precisa viabilizar a cadeia produtiva desses minerais.
- Na década de 1980 renunciamos à capacitação de todo o processo. Nos guiamos pela lei do mercado. Como a China oferecia o produto a baixo custo, entendemos que era melhor importarmos os insumos da China do que desenvolvermos a cadeia produtiva desses minerais. O Brasil não pode renunciar de novo – afirmou o relator.
De acordo com Luiz Henrique, o Brasil deve se tornar independente no processo de aproveitamento das terras-raras, e para essa atividade é importante integrar o poder público com a iniciativa privada.

This is one of two photos, same bird and branch positions. This one is cropped tighter showing just the bird and part of the curved branch.
This was shot on my only day at Lake Kawguchiko that was supposed to feature the majestic Mt. Fuji but it was too cloudy, misty that Fujisan did not want to show himself. Nonetheless, the area was very serene and beautiful although missing the major element. Better luck next time.
