In the past few days we've had two electrical storms. The first one started around midnight and I was too tired to go out (I'm actually quite nervous of thunderstorms) but saw some wonderful images the next day and felt quite envious.
The second one a few days later started around 9pm so I just grabbed my bag and drove off to the nearest coastal point to me before I lost my nerve. It was a weird storm which lots of lightning but not much thunder or rain.
Mishap 1: I didn't check settings other then a vague idea that a wide angled lens is better.
Mishap 2: I didn't have a torch to hand so I couldn't see what I was doing when mounting the camera, and playing with settings. Fortunately a couple of other storm chasers helped me out!
Mishap 3: I thought the drive there and back was a bit different. It seemed darker then usual apart from the lightning flashes. It was only a day or so later that I realised my lights were not set to coming on automatically so it appears I drove there and back with no lights on.
Oh and the lightning was not over the sea!
Apart from that it was fine.

This colorful one seems to be pretty new. You can see that the wall was painted recently to cover -up a previous graffiti. This electrical mini-substation is right next to the Rugby field where the annual Randfontein Show is held each year.
Some local graffiti captured during our second C-19 wave lockdown (level 3).
A powerful lightning bolt emanating from a source between two levels of cloud.
It displays an astonishing multiplicity of lightning forks with horizontal and vertical branches, ending with a colossal ground strike disappearing somewhere beyond a ridge six kilometres away.

With the Saturday evening storm having passed over Pype Hayes it now rages over Erdington and Wylde Green. One fork looks to have made an earth whilst the other just dances across the sky.
Here's yet more lightning from an intense storm last spring on eastern plains of Weld County, Colorado. Best viewed large on black if you get a chance (click on the image to open the large light table view, or type "L").
Image Notes:: This is a composite image of seven long exposures, one of which caught three lightning blasts by itself. The lightning was so close and bright that even though it was night the foreground was illuminated perfectly. All images were shot with me inside my car, it was way too dangerous to be wandering around lugging a metal tripod outside. ;-)
