better View On Black

With the Presidential election weighing heavily on my mind and on my anxiety. I am no longer filled with sadness. No, I'm filled with rage. Rage that my whole life is about to be upturned depending on the results of this election. Rage that my husband will lose any and all support/backing to be who he is meant to be. Rage that these people feel the need to tell me what I can and cannot do with my own body.

Why should what I do in my bedroom be up for public political debate? Why should who have I have married EVER be brought into question by someone who has and probably will never meet me? Why should discussions to be had between my partner, my doctor, and I be up to YOU.

WE. WILL. NOT. BACK. DOWN.

Well, that didn't take long to fall apart --- although I'm going to refuse to let that man live 'rent-free' in my head and will turn exclusively to music and forego all the constant NEWS...

Of course, don't mean to make light of the recent fires, especially the Mountain Fire down south a bit -- we're entering into our Santa Ana Wind season, which is always fire scary.

In an unsolicited plug tho, our local NPR San Luis Obispo KCBX has one of the best music shows going -- every morning from 9 to Noon and most nights have a variety of incredible tunes (aimed mostly at us flickr age folks)

I hope everyone who is eligible, and who hasn't early voted, exercises their franchise today. We get the government we elect. I got to my polling place at 5:30 for the 6:00 opening and there were only a hand full of people ahead of me. I was finished by 6:08. I'm glad I got there early as there was a long line of people as I left the building.

One Step for a Nation, One step for Humanity?

Where is a Mr./Ms Smith when you need them?

Maybe this is the person and he has arrived in Washington to help the little guy and do the right thing for our nation & for the world.

Or is it just a pipe dream that I'm having again?

I have apparently been elected "International Policy Consultant on Baked Goods". As my first act in office, I shall bake America some cookies. And...um...eat them all for you, too. SEE what I DO for my Country?

I was on a brake between assignments with the railroad. There was a roll of film that had a few shots left so I decided to grab the camera and take a walk from Union Station, down Pennsylvania Avenue to the The Ellipse, just out side of the south lawn of The White House. I wanted to document the mood during this important day in our nations capitol.

I figured today is a fitting day to post something as patriotic as an apple pie. made this weekend, I think this was by far the prettiest pie I've ever baked. it was tasty, too, as evidenced by the fact that most of it was eaten before I even had a chance to take a photo.

6 months - and election day.

I'm voting for her. We can't turn back the clocks our country's progress. I'm voting for my daughter and all the women out there who are fed up with men making decisions about their bodies!

Kodak EasyShare DX7590

I've started carrying around my trusty old Kodak DX7590 5 MP digicam with a 10x Schneider-Kreuznach zoom. Normally this camera sits in the closet, in favor of my Minolta 35mm's and Olympus E-510 DSLR, but it does take nice pictures with excellent color, so I've decided to use it as my everyday traveling camera. The 35mm's and the DSLR can be a pit of a pain at times, but the small size and good optics of the Kodak make for a great traveling companion.

For those of you who would like a nice, inexpensive camera that gives results far beyond it's price tag, I highly recommend checking out all the Kodak super zooms. While you can't slip them in your shirt pocket, they are still much smaller and lighter than any DSLR on the market right now.

State Government Election Day in South Australia - razzle dazzle at the polling booths - could be interesting this time with a third cap in the ring - but, probably not.

"Shoot video throughout a day in your life, then put it together and upload it the next day. Don't add any music or sound effects, just use what the camera recorded."

I originally saw this video and fell in love with it and then of course, fell in love with the original. I feel kind of bad that my day looks a lot like the original's but I guess the computer types think alike. This was for the Nikon D90 Club for the Lights, Camera, ACTION! challenge.

Filmed with my Nikon D90 with a 50mm f/1.4 prime and 18-105mm kit lens. 171 video clips were made, 80 were used. Note: I regret that I had to cut down this video even further - Flickr says it allows 90 second videos, but be warned - it's actually more like 87-88 seconds. I had to upload this video a few times because they kept cutting off the end.

... Again, why does Flickr always pick an ugly thumbnail?

Edit: Ooooh there are bonus points for the best video! Vote for Melissa? Because she is cool? Maybe?

UPDATE (November 27th, 2010): It's been over 2 years since I made this video and I actually made another one for Kevin Macdonald's YouTube project for "Life in a Day". I created footage on July 24th, 2010 and edited it into a video under 6 minutes. It was in the top 100 hours of footage so I can only hope that something will make it into the main film. We'll see. You can see my Life in a Day video here on YouTube.

UPDATE: I am officially a credited finalist for the "Life in a Day" project. :)

Today is the day Americans go to the polls to vote for their choice for President of the United States for the next 4 years. This year's election has forced Americans to choose sides in a way unprecedented in our nation's history. No one seems to really love the candidates, and it has been a virtual war of mudslinging, accusations, and investigations, leaving us in an uneasy state of distrust and fear. It might be a while before the United States returns to what we would consider "normal". As the polls close, the tallying begins, and America waits to see whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will be our 45th President.

No matter who wins this election, my prayer is that Americans will remember that that is what we are, and stand together to overcome the division and strife that has consumed us over recent months and years.

May God bless America.

I had to go out one last time. What better place to go than the first place I originally shot whilst on holiday, in December 2010 after the snow trapped us in London for a week whilst the airports were shut due to flurries. I photographed these Houses of Parliament in that instance as a tourist, years later as a resident during the Scottish referendum that I followed into the wee hours, and even now as I transition away from this city back to Edinburgh - home. I'll always treasure this place as something special.

I promise there will be a halt towards the relentless influx of dogs and magpies within the borders of this fine fine yard. My party and i will ensure there will never again be a shortage of loose sand to roll in nor wil there ever be speak of terrace-expansion or digging ponds EVER AGAIN!

Comrades i love this garden, i grew up here right around the bend. This is truly a great garden probably the greatest garden in the world, truly a fabulous garden. And if you give me your mandate i'll garantee it wil even be a greater garden.

For too long have we sat here motionless while the establishment enriched itself with the birds and mice we caught! Mindlessly storing them in there big grey warm bins....letting them go to waste only to let the spoils be taken away when they carelessly drag these bins through the streets while we sat here hungry.

No longer friends.. no longer. GET UP!
