Wednesday, April 17, is election day in Croatia. Carnival of democracy is a non-working day :-)

Gearing up for another Federal Election... posters are starting to show up all over the place now..

The Commonwealth Observer Group, chaired by the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete, witnessed the general elections in Nigeria.

The Commonwealth regularly sends teams to observe and report on the conduct of elections. We help build lasting democratic institutions, enabling citizen participation and representation at national and local level. We believe in invitation, not intervention, and follow the principles outlined in the international declaration and code of conduct for election observers.

Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and a key member of the Commonwealth family. The Commonwealth has a long tradition of supporting the nation’s democratic development through election observation. This will be the sixth time a Commonwealth Observer Group will be observing elections in Nigeria, since 1999.

The people of Somaliland Republic have shown to the outside world their value, belief and exceptional quality with respect to dealing and embrace of universal democratic norms and values. The way in which Somaliland voters behaved during local council elections, how they exercised their constitutional rights and how they respected the rule of was a well-expressed, admirable and powerful message to the world. All in all, the way in which the Somaliland people have fulfilled their civic duties was a wonder worthy phenomenon in the entire African continent

Mayoral election in Covington. Three candidates. Unfortunately, the outcome was not in a direction I would have wanted.

Seeing the "Vote NO on #1" signs up and down the road on my way to work makes me feel like maybe Tennessee is pretty much ok. I think Prop.1 (amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage, which isn't recognized here anyway) is going to pass anyway, but it's nice to see that there are people who don't think it should.

A contestant being quizzed over the points in his manifesto for the hostel elections. Quite dramatic, isn't it?

This one actually made me smile!

It reads something like this:

It should be safe to eat a hot dog in the middle of the night in Västerhaninge without risking to be mashed*.

With more police officers Haninge will be safer.

The New Moderaterna. (republicans light).

*Referring of course to eating a hot dog with mashed potatoes.

There's been a lot of violence in Västerhaninge over the last few years. Murder and assault and that sort of thing.

Today the elections for the Bundestag, the federal parliament of Germany are held. After 16 years as the chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel is no longer on the ballot. It's still unclear who will be the largest party and what coalition can be formed. This is a billboard of the Marxist-Leninist party MLPD.

For the last four General Elections I have prepared a piece of art work, starting on the day the manifestos are published.

My self imposed rules are that I record only what is reported in the media, and that the piece is completed on Election Night whilst listening to the results.

It's a fascinating task as the changes in emphasis can be immense and then easily forgotten as the process rolls on.

This year, for the first time ever, events have consipired against me, with a family wedding and a house move, so I have had to scale back my efforts and make a much simplified version. I won't even be here on Election Night, so the last emotional stages will be missing.

My take on this year's Election is that it is an election by the media, with the first televised debate between the leaders of the three main political parties, and also the use of such things as blogs and twitter.

The piece will be in the form of a textile "page from my sketchbook" and I have shown here one of the central images. This is from a press photograph of the first debate and I loved how the photographer managed to capture the dynamics of the group.

I transferred the image to calico using the Acrylic Mat Medium method and then stitched this to my previously prepared background.

I have already voted, using a postal vote!
