en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_Day_(United_States)

Election Day in the United States is the day set by law for the election of public officials. It occurs on the Tuesday after the first Monday of November. The earliest possible date is November 2 and the latest possible date is November 8. Election Day is November 2, 2010 this year.

Election Day is a civic holiday in some states, including Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. Some other states require that workers be permitted to take time off from employment without loss of pay. California Elections Code Section 14000 provides that employees otherwise unable to vote must be allowed two hours off with pay, at the beginning or end of a shift.

Some activists oppose this date on the grounds that it decreases voter turnout because most citizens work on Tuesdays, and advocate making election day a federal holiday or allowing voters to cast their ballots over two or more days. The United Auto Workers union has negotiated making Election Day a holiday for its workers at the U.S. domestic auto manufacturers.

Many states have implemented early voting, which allows the voters to cast ballots, in many cases up to a month early. Also, all states have some kind of absentee ballot system. The state of Oregon, for example, performs all major elections through Postal voting that are sent to voters several weeks before Election Day. Some companies will let their employees come in late or leave early on Election Day to allow them an opportunity to get to their precinct and vote.

January 23, 2006. Ok this is a crappy picture I know (my apologies). It was way too dark, my telephoto lens way too unsteady but it was election day in Canada and I just wanted to record something of us all voting. Here's the entrance to my voting poll at a local east end Montreal school with lots of people putting Democracy into action. Turn out seemed high by what I saw. Now the big question... how big a change are we all going to make if any?

A historic night for Greece and Europe: Left win election for the first time in Greece, and it is also the first electoral victory for an anti-austerity party in the eurozone since the start of the crisis in 2008.

Washington DC, Monday April 11, 2016. Hundreds of Democracy Spring anti-corruption activists who marched into DC yesterday gathered with local allies on and near the US Capitol* steps for an historic day of protest featuring non-violent civil disobedience sit-ins. Over four hundred were arrested making this, along with the climate justice protest two years ago, one of the largest such actions since the heyday of the civil rights and anti-war movements of the '60s-early '70s. Uniting this week with Democracy Awakening groups, the Democracy Spring activists plan to keep the sit-ins going until Monday. Interactions between the protesters and the police were largely peaceful and respectful. I don't see any useful purpose served by cuffing and booking peaceful folks exercising their First Amendment right to protest the occupation of our public buildings by loathsome grifters impersonating public servants. How many millions of dollars will our government burn up this week for these unnecessary arrests? US corporate media coverage of this important event? NBC Nightly News but not much else. This is no surprise when you consider the many millions of dollars paid to corporate media for political advertising because of our corrupted election process.

*"What exactly are we demanding that Congress do? Our collective demand to Congress is that it take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in politics and ensure free and fair elections in which every American has an equal voice. Our proposed reform bills are: the Government By The People Act & Fair Elections Now Act, The Voting Rights Advancement Act Of 2015 & Voter Empowerment Act Of 2015 and the Democracy For All Amendment. WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton ended her historic campaign for the presidency on Saturday and told supporters to unite behind rival Barack Obama, closing out a race that was as grueling as it was groundbreaking.

The former first lady, who as recently as Tuesday declared herself the strongest candidate, gave Obama an unqualified endorsement and pivoted from her role as determined foe to absolute ally.

Mascots are everywhere. Even at the election. Even on the official election poster board. This is Japan. This is our culture, And I'm not impressed because everything has its own mascot.

Honestly, I wonder if mascots are needed on this occasion??? Can anyone tell that this cute creature is telling you that the polling stations are open from 7.00am to 8.00pm? :-P

San Francisco Mtns from Marshall Lake, Flagstaff. That's the "lake" in the foreground -- it's dry this year. It was Election Night 2004, and I camped in solitude in open juniper-pine woodland at a random spot on National Forest land near Flagstaff. It was up over 7100' & the coldest night of my trip (27F when I went to bed), and I built a little fire -- something I seldom do, but the site seemed lightly used and there was plenty of downed wood, so I decided the ecological impact was acceptable. Hopefully that judgement didn't have anything to do with my shivers. :-) Warm feet while camping: a novel luxury! NB: isopropyl rubbing alcohol makes good lighter fluid (necessity is a mother :-) -- as you can see from the snow, the site was pretty damp, & the pine wouldn't burn worth a damn. But I discovered that the twigs of oily juniper lit up nicely).

So I nursed my little fire, and listened to election returns on the car radio until the wee hours, and quietly mourned, while a great horned owl joined in.

Kenya's fourth presidential and parliamentary elections were held on 4 Mar 2013: A man happily walks away from the voting booths, having done his civic duty, at the polling station at Loresho Primary School (photo credit: ILRI/Susan MacMillan).

Each candidate puts one legal size poster in the box.

A typical poster consists of:

- candidate's name (big font, and it's gothic/sans-serif, though in Japanese typography sans-serif or serif is somewhat different compared with in the west )

- candidate's face (smile, smile and smile)

- slogan(s)

- the name of the political party that the candidate belongs

As I observe, one of the colours that are most frequently used is blue. Something "fresh" and "clearcut" about the colour is particularly liked, I suppose.

Anyway, these posters are boring as hell.

For the cute little creature at the right bottom, I posted an enlarged picture here.

The Commonwealth Observer Group, chaired by the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete, witnessed the general elections in Nigeria.

The Commonwealth regularly sends teams to observe and report on the conduct of elections. We help build lasting democratic institutions, enabling citizen participation and representation at national and local level. We believe in invitation, not intervention, and follow the principles outlined in the international declaration and code of conduct for election observers.

Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and a key member of the Commonwealth family. The Commonwealth has a long tradition of supporting the nation’s democratic development through election observation. This will be the sixth time a Commonwealth Observer Group will be observing elections in Nigeria, since 1999.
