KWVR Spring Gala.
This male tricolored heron was doing his best to attract a female. His breeding display included neck stretching, deep bowing, circular display flights. Over and over again. He put on quite the show.
Had I been a single female tricolor, I would have given into his charm.
He was really fun to watch and I hope his efforts paid off.

Wyatt has been practicing his Flippy Flopper skills this week in the snow. His timing is getting better. Much better thann with the ball. It will be interesting to see what he can do on the grass when we see it again.(That's after the mud dries, if it ever dries....)

Well, the men seem to be having a bit of a chinwag whilst going about their nuptials here!! ;-)) Most definitely of no great merit technically speaking but it did make me smile! ;-))
Somewhere in the world it is tea time. However, this is the result of a still life effort using available window light with a reflector. This is actually very easy to do. The hard part is finding stuff in my house that will make a pretty picture display.
Another collaborative effort with my daughters' help. My younger daughter helped with the background and my older daughter gifted me these beautiful peppercorns.
I'm trying to get comfortable in working in color so expect more color intense images as I explore this area. I usually shy away from color as I find it challenging so how best to deal with it than in extremes?
repos de la petite famille arrivée au sommet du Puy de la Tache (1630 m), dans le massif des monts Dore, département du Puy de Dôme en Auvergne. Séquence contemplation..
The Pyramid in Porcupine Gorge. With the temperature forcast to be 37 degrees we headed down the gorge relatively early in the morning to beat the heat A good strategy, except it meant a return trip back up in the middle of the day. Only 1.2 kilometres but it took some effort. Maybe fewer beers and more exercise ....... I'll start that next week :-)
The mimosa (Mimosa pudica), also called the shameful sense plant, Even if it seems naturally attractive, you should not touch the mimosa too often, because it is an effort for the plant to move its leaves every time.
✨✨✨
A friendly crew smokes it up for the last effort to get a short sand train for Emporium over Keating Summit. Lucky for us, the morning fog burned off a little below the summit. June 7, 2019 was a great day on the WNYP. 3 trains which we managed to shoot in about 30 different locations thanks to good intel from the birdie network. All day I kept wondering why I never shot Conrail here.
From the summit of Carn an Tuirc we have this splended view down to Glenshee and the Ski centre, with the Caringorm mountains back-dropping the whole scene (I've picked out three other Munro's that I know). I've climbed from a starting point lower than the ski centre to give some idea of the effort involved. I would say breath taking, but I had little breath left by this time!!
This bike trip takes me to the summits of two Munro's, Carn an Tuirc & Cairn of Claise. Carn an Tuirc is at a height of 1018 meters (3339 feet), while Cairn of Claise is sightly higher at 1062 meters (3484 feet). It took me four hours to drag myself (and my bike) up there, but because of the bike, it took less than an hour to get back to the car. Total distance covered was 26.5 kilometers (16.5 miles) and starting at 370 meters, I had an altitude gain of over 700 meters (2296+ feet) - that was a big one!!
A long exposure shot of the inner harbour at Whitby of the fishing vessels moored up.I liked this particular shot because of the clarity of the reflections of the boats and the lights, however it is water and it is ot perfectly still even when you think it is resulting in some blurring of the smaller coble. I'm sure there is a technique to counter this and would be happy for anyone to point me in the right direction.
I was also impressed that the local council had gone to the effort of light painting the lobster pots with a spotlight, appreciated.
Many thanks for viewing this and other images in my photo stream.
Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.

I apologise if I do not get around to commenting on everyone. The internet is terrible where we are camping.

In Baxter State Park, Maine. Doubletop is one of the finest hikes in the park, particularly in autumn. The trail to the summit from the south is increasingly steep and rough the higher you go. My wife and I have some battle scars to prove it! But the views are well worth the effort.
Our round trip distance was 8.5 miles with ~2700' of climbing. Mount Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine, can be seen at upper left.
Thank you for visiting, and for your kind comments and faves. They are greatly appreciated! :)

Ankarafantsika
Madagascar
This family of passeriformes, consisting of 4 species, all endemic to Madagascar, was entirely unknown to me until we began preparing for the visit to the country.
Ankarafantsika was a bit distant from the route we had initially planned, and the 10-hour journey each way represented an extra 2 days, one for going and another for returning, but it's well worth the effort.
However, the trip offers magnificent landscapes, and the journey ends up being quite enjoyable (despite the potholes on the road, and Ana letting her phone 'fly' while filming the scenery from the car window).
Moreover, we also managed to capture photos of three more species that can't be seen anywhere else in the world (except, perhaps, in zoos): the Vulnerable White-breasted Mesite, the Endangered Van Dam's Vanga, and the Critically Endangered Madagascar Fish-Eagle. All excellent reasons not to ignore this location! We managed to photograph all of them.

All my photos are now organized into sets by the country where they were taken, by taxonomic order, by family, by species (often with just one photo for the rarer ones), and by the date they were taken.
So, you may find:

The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests. 35904
Château Simard has a long history in the region that dates back to at least the 1700’s The actual château was built in the 18th century. The property takes its name from one of its previous owners, Count Simard.
Stepping back to 1870, in those days, Château Simard was a much larger vineyard. In an effort to expand the wine trade in Saint Émilion, to help in the shipping of their wine, a railroad was established that runs through the bottom of Saint Émilion region. However, the tracks were placed right in the middle of the Simard vineyard, cutting it in half.

A small army of NJ Transit employers facilitate the power change at South Amboy on the morning of 24 August 1981. The E8A duo of 4248 and 4331 have just cut off from train 3314 and pulled ahead, while GG1 No. 4873 prepares to back down from the storage yard to tie on. The gate keeper operates the manual crossing gates at the Augusta Street crossing, while others line switches. Meanwhile, the railfan photographers do their job.
At 325m high, it takes quite the effort to hike up to the top of Big Daddy. These folks still had another hour of climbing.
The crows around here are excellent at diving into waste bins and distributing the contents all over the pavement in their quest for food remnants!
This local Lidl supermarket have installed these new bins in their efforts to combat this problem and it seems to be working! Now all we need is for KFC and MacDonalds to do similar!
January 25 marks the 270th anniversary of Moscow State Lomonosov University.
Moscow State University was founded in 1755 and rightfully considered to be the oldest Russian university. Its establishment in Moscow was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov, a prominent scientist and Russian academician (1711–1765), after whom it was named.

This is the third location and second processing effort I've made in slowing the water under a passing train.
A location I found just east of Roy Bridge having hacked my way through the undergrowth, I was lucky enough to find this bridge crossing the River Spean and make a test shot of a southbound DMU. Deciding I had enough time, I left the location, pausing to photograph some circling birds of prey, only to come unstuck with the road to my next location being a 'no through road'. I legged it back here and made the spot for the southbound Alcans, only for the autofocus not to hit the mark with the early running train on the bridge, the second image, in focus, with the loco nose in the trees, but no actual tripod to try this technique. This looked good with the alcans heading left to right in the sun, loco and four white wagons, and gutted at not quite making the shot.
Determined not to be defeated I stayed and set up the tripod for the northbound 1Y11 04:50 Edinburgh to Fort William sleeper to cross with 66740 and 73970 at the helm.
The most common resident shrike found throughout the year in our region. They are aggressive birds and we often sight them chasing the pesky drongoes which spare no effort to trouble other birds including the raptors.
The birds prefer to perch on dry trees with thorns or fence posts around 3 m high and survey the area around for insects. Usually beetles, crickets, small lizards, skinks, dragonflies etc... Once the prey is sighted they dive and get back to the perch for eating - maybe about 50% of the time. If the perch is a thorny perch, the chances of them coming back are much higher since they pierce the prey onto the thorn and then tear them to consume it. This is a behaviour to compensate for the weak legs that cannot hold the prey to tear.
Appreciate all your views and feedback. Many thanks in advance.
The fall of the crooked anvil.
My first time hiking here but well worth the effort, beautiful and, being off the main trail, very peaceful.
Light at the end of the tunnel.
Out again today, this time in my local woodland.
Wet and very muddy underfoot but worth the effort and discomfort.
I turned aimlessly into a business park near us and was astounded by all of the wildflower Black Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia) lining the street and ditches for a long way. I have never seen a profusion like this.
There was no way to get a photo of the whole thing in the otherwise bland environment, but I got this one looking down into a ditch from a higher spot.
A more nimble person could probably do well by getting right down into he ditch, but that isn't an option for me these days,
I think I stacked 4 photos to get it as sharp as I did, but the wind didn't help my efforts. However, I don't mind the falloff toward the back.

E is for Enchiladas
Perhaps not the most elegant, or elevated dish out there, but definitely enjoyable!
These enchiladas are Cheese Enchiladas, and are usually only made by special request, and for special events. I don't spend as much time in the kitchen as I used to, but even I have to admit these are well worth the effort!
For years I've been thinking of visiting the waterfalls in autumn colours, and this year I finally made the effort. The oaks were beautifully coloured and I had a. great day just taking it all in. Bright Lanterns is by The Tallest Man on Earth. It's more Lino cutting of xmas cards today.
It look a couple of efforts to identify the celestial South but eventually managed to locate it behind the tree. This was taken near Mkuze in KwaZulu Natal where there were many knarled trees, many of which seem to have died in the last 5-6 years due to continuing low rain levels
It took Charlie the Trout three days to wiggle out of the lake to this point. He thought it would be great fun to slide through the snow into the lake. Wilbur the Bald Eagle thought Charlie would make a great meal. Charlie slid down Wilbur's gullet. Not the experience Charlie expected.
