The National Association of Cuban American Educators (NACAE) awarded "Educator of the Year 2012" Dr. Modesto A. Maidique, President Emeritus of Florida International University (FIU), Alva H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership, Executive Director of the Center for Leadership and Professor of Management, Faculty of Business Administration, all at FIU. Dr. Maidique was FIU President for 23 years, the first Cuban-American university president in the U.S.
The event also gave the scholarship NACAE "Gastón Fernández de la Torriente" the student Carolina Sanchez
The Valdosta-Lowndes Retired Educators' Association held their November meeting on Monday, November 12, 2012 at the Holiday Inn in Valdosta, GA.
Educators from our partner museums got together on Monday Jan 24 2011 to learn about teaching Nanotechnogy from each other. Aaron and Keith from NISENet as wall as Inka and Gled from UALR were there as well.
The 2013 LEAD (Legislators Educators Appreciation Dinner) brought together over 1,000 CTU members and supporters to connect with elected officials and demonstrate our Power in the Rank and File. Guests included: Gov. Pat Quinn, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and numerous Illinois State Representatives and Chicago Aldermen.
Back in October, Bordeaux Wines participated in our 3rd Wine Riot of the year in the beautiful city of Chicago at Union Station. Thanks to Le Wine Buff, Ward Kadel, and sommeliers & educators, Ryan Hoffman & Jon McDaniel, for repping Bordeaux. We were thrilled to introduce Bordeaux to so many wine lovers!

In early April, Oppenheimer Elementary Kindergarten and Grade 5 students got a unique opportunity to create some fantastic chalk paintings using chalk pastels and tempera paint. The painting sessions were coordinated by Artist in Residence Marta Robertson-Smyth. Robertson-Smyth had the students sketch out the symbiotic relationship between bees, flowers and plants with chalk pastels.
The entire project was a huge hit with both sets of students. The resulting artwork is a colourful example of the creativity we all have inside of us. Robertson-Smyth is a well-known and popular artist who has worked extensively with Vancouver educators.
