We've been on another of our mad dashes north. It included stops in Red Deer and Gull Lake, as well as Edmonton. In our fair capital, we explored the new and gorgeous Walterdale Bridge, the new funicular to the riverside, and the incredible Viking exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum. We also just snooped around the downtown to see what there is to see, and there's lots. Apologies to our friends and family up there, but it was a real dash just to see the few things we did. More pix to come!

Lightning over the city of Edmonton, Canada.

This picture captures a number of features including downtown Edmonton. It also captures the newest bridge (LRT with pedestrian walkway underneath) and Accidental beach, created by the change in water flow by the construction dams while the bridge was being built.

A lot of snow up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada!

The view from my 21st floor room at the Sandman Signature Edmonton Downtown Hotel

Went out tonight and try to shoot the aurora over the city, but they didn't appear. I've seen others make amazing panos of Edmonton's skyline, so thought I'd have a go. It was -18'c, so didn't last too long, ha ha. The white flood lights illuminate the construction of the new Walterdale Bridge

Next to the Muttart Conservatory is the Edmonton Ski Club. I'm sure it looks different when there is snow, but I still think that it seems more like a sled hill than a ski hill.

We had seen this new funicular featured on one of our favourite TV shows, Amazing Race Canada. It's a great addition to the downtown scene. Located right behind the fabulous Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, it brings Edmontonians and visitors from the downtown right to the river valley, without crossing a road! Bravo Edmonton!

Looking in a northwest direction towards the heart of Edmonton, Alberta.

This is what Edmonton, Alberta, Canada looks like for much of the winter. The view is to the south from near my home. Not much snow this year and it has not snowed since before Christmas. It is customary to sprinkle a bit of "Road Sand" on the streets to provide a bit of traction. The "Road Sand" contains a bit of salt which allows the sand to sink into the compacting snow improving traction. Without the application this sand/salt mixture the vehicle tires compact the snow into a ice. Repeated application of vehicle tires results in a polished surface of ice so smooth that you cannot stand on it because of its somewhat irregular surface. I have fallen many, many times.

When the snow melts in April the sand etc remains and the whole of the city streets are swept. The vegetation turns green and things look much different - some say prettier.

If has been quite foggy the last few days and this has resulted in the deposition of ice crystals on many of the trees making them quite attractive.

Floodlights are on for the baseball game at RE/MAX Field. Swift Current 57s was at Edmonton playing Game 3 of the WMBL Championships. Edmonton Prospects won game 3, 6-5. The 57s won the championship on August 17th, 3 games to 2.

The new Walterdale Bridge is nearing completion, 2 years over schedule, it will open in Sept 2017.

Another fun find on our photo walk a while back. All the fruit in this piece of art are individual pieces separated by about 1 foot. When you stand in front of them, at just the right angle they look like they are perfectly placed in the fruit bowl. Very neat effect.

The Industrial Revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes in Europe and the United States, in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. Finally arrived in Edmonton around 1870's. ;)

Pre-industrial machinery was built by various craftsmen—millwrights built water and windmills, carpenters made wooden framing, and smiths and turners made metal parts.

I took this photo this morning. It was just below freezing and taken from the Jame McDonald Bridge which is pretty high up and exposed to the wind. I am afraid I got cold.

The City is building a funicular just below the Hotel McDonald, which you can see in the grey line below the french chateau style building, which is the Hotel McDonald and the brightly lit area to the right.

Edmonton, Canada, 2012

HDR Picture from the Edmonton Skyline from a few months ago.

One of my favorite things about waking around downtown Edmonton, is the beautiful buildings and interesting architecture. The Art Gallery of Alberta and the Citadel Theater have been in place around Churchill Square for years, promoting arts and culture in our City. These buildings are just as interesting inside as they are from the street view.

The JW Marriott is nearly at 46 and will reach 55 in February, the adjacent Stantec Tower has some way to go. It'll finish 10 or 11 storey's higher than the JW Marriott.

Shot from the top of the Tory building at the University. It's not easy to spot, but there is a train crossing on the top of the High Level Bridge. Scanned from a 35mm slide.

Some grumpy metalheads stopped me on Edmonton's Whyte (82) Avenue, the heart of Old Strathcona's nightlife, and demanded I take their photo. I don't think they were really grumpy, though. I think they were just posing for the photo. Though I think they were drunk/
