Economic recovery in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has lost some momentum. Near-term growth prospects in LAC are weighed down by tighter global financial conditions and an intensification in trade tensions. The moderating recovery is also underpinned by divergent growth outcomes across the region, as the impact of external headwinds has been amplified by country-specific vulnerabilities, especially in the largest economies. There are bright spots to the outlook, however. Despite the slowdown in regional economic activity, private investment is showing signs of life. Nevertheless, medium-term growth remains stuck in low gear, slowing progress in catching up to income levels in advanced economies.
The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to welcome Krishna Srinivasan, Deputy Director of the Western Hemisphere Department, to review the IMF’s latest economic outlook for the LAC region. His presentation will cover key challenges going forward to help the region’s policymakers boost productive capacity and raise investment and saving rates in order to build strong, durable, and inclusive growth over the medium term. A brief commentary and a wide-ranging discussion will follow the presentation.
