History: The Administration Building was built in 1895, with the east wing being added in 1913. The building once housed all the departments on the station. OARDC is the research arm of The Ohio State University College of Agriculture.

Despite its dark hue, the future of Northeast coal is brighter than ever. Coal mining is the reason Tumbler Ridge was built, and it is driving a new period of growth in the local economy. Insatiable Asian steel markets continue to fuel demand without a slowdown in sight. Coal mining pays some of the highest wages in the country, so the increasing number of jobs being created is welcomed with open arms by local and regional businesses.

Conference: A MORE ACCESSIBLE ARCTIC: MYTHS, FACTS AND ISSUES AHEAD

On 1 March 2011 Embassy of Embassy of Canada to Poland and the Polish Institute of International Affairs organized a conference devoted to Arctic region.

“This half-day conference brought together Polish and Canadian Arctic experts and decision

makers to support and consider the emerging discussion in Poland on this important region.

Poland has been a distinguished member of the Arctic research community and a prominent

Observer State of the Arctic Council since its inception. While to Canadians the Arctic is home,

and to Polish researchers it is a challenging but familiar workplace, to much of the international

community and indeed Polish society it remains relatively unknown or misunderstood. Far from

being a ‘wild west’ frontier as it is sometimes portrayed, the Arctic is a well-governed and

thriving homeland to numerous indigenous communities with enormous development potential.

Canada’s vision for the Arctic is that of a stable region with clearly defined boundaries, dynamic

economic growth and trade, vibrant Northern communities, and healthy and productive

ecosystems. The Arctic Council is for Canada the well-established and principal forum for

international cooperation in these areas. Poland’s vision of the Arctic is similar, as an observer

in the Arctic Council, which convenes and supports sustained dialogue and cooperation.

Canada, like Poland, has made a strong commitment to Arctic science—the foundation for sound

policy- and decision-making on the environment. Canada was the single largest financial

contributor to International Polar Year research activities and has announced the construction

of a state of the art international High Arctic research facility in Cambridge Bay, and Poland

maintains a world-class scientific research base in Spitsbergen. New opportunities and

challenges are emerging across the Arctic, in part as a result of climate change and the pursuit

of resources. While this may well support social and economic development, it may also bring

new environmental threats, search and rescue incidents, civil emergencies and, potentially

even illegal activity*”.

Laurence came to Sandia in 1989. Prior to that he worked for IBM for three years in Tucson after earning his BS degree in chemical engineering from New Mexico State University and MS in materials science and engineering from Stanford.

Laurence’s first job at Sandia was in the thin film and brazing department. After a one-year Entrepreneurial Leave of Absence in 1995, he returned to the same department working on cooperative research and development agreements that intersected organizations across the Labs. Since 2002, he has been with Sandia’s Government Relations organization, focusing primarily on tribal government relations and tribal energy development.

[The Hotel Norton set contains 7 photos] The 45,000 square-foot Hotel Norton in the center of the town of Norton was completed in 1920 across from the N&W railroad depot (no longer in existence), convenient for travelers. It was a first-class hotel with the luxury of private bathrooms and steam heat. Designed by Thomas Seabrook Brown (Bristol, Virginia and Washington D. C.), the structure is a commercial structure in Colonial Revival style. That it was constructed in a small coal-mining town makes its presence all that more uncommon. The cost was $375,000, which at that time was a substantial sum. The first guest in this 100-room building was the noted evangelist, Billy Sunday. By 1961 the hotel was no longer in use. A period of deterioration set in. In 1994 the city of Norton purchased the structure and renovation began. I’m not certain of its current use (2013).

The façade displays three divisions: sandstone base (from Kentucky) for the lobby and main floor; a brick center section of four floors, American bond; and stone and brick entablature at the top. On the top level are decorative panels are placed between the windows, above which is a prominently overhanging wooden cornice and then a brick parapet. In the base are set large windows with patterned transoms. The front façade is symmetrical with windows occupying three bays. The center portion consists of wide windows flanked by smaller windows, all with a shared sill. To either side of the center section are pairs of windows. The longer side façade consists of three distinct divisions, the middle portion set back from the sidewalk. There are two entrances, one on each façade. The main entrance is composed of French doors with transoms and sidelights; the side entrance is less detailed. Marquees of glass and ornamented metal are found above both entrances. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places May 16, 2002 with ID #02000524. My major source of information is the detailed NRHP nomination form located at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources website. This document also contains a thorough description of the interior of the building.
