The large pilgrimage church built between 1858 and 1864 was elevated to the status of papal basilica in 1923. The patronage of the "Assumption of Mary into Heaven" is intended to remind us what the goal of earthly pilgrimage is.
In 1991, a restoration was completed with the interior painting based on Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and one of the most colorful church interiors in the Rhineland was restored.

Standing right below a waterfall at Milford Sound. The ferry went right below it. It was an amazing experience.
Hundreds of outstretched hands reach out from the lagoon, as seen from the bridge leading to the ubusot, or main temple of Wat Kong Rhon, the White Temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand. These hands, according to the artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat, represent worldly desires and temptations. I suppose that is a particularly Buddhist view of looking at earthly needs and suffering. We transcend them by walking over them on a bridge to the temple? -- December 5, 2019

A Pano-Sabotage shot, very much of the Earthly plane, laid over top of Hieronymus Bosch's famous Triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights" ( 16th century ). My "Earthly plane" here replaces Bosch's as a contemporary view of the life of the here and now. But I've left the flanking Bosch panels of Heaven ( left ) and Hell ( right ) to bookend and frame the contemporary scene.

Cider garden in the Half Moon pub...yes it sounds idyllic but let me assure you, dear reader, that overindulgence of the demon drink, particularly in the sun, can be classed as an extreme sport.
Let's just leave it there shall we, as the clatter of the iPad keyboard is exacerbating the situation...

Bond And Free
Love has earth to which she clings
With hills and circling arms about--
Wall within wall to shut fear out.
But Thought has need of no such things,
For Thought has a pair of dauntless wings.
On snow and sand and turn, I see
Where Love has left a printed trace
With straining in the world's embrace.
And such is Love and glad to be
But Thought has shaken his ankles free.
Thought cleaves the interstellar gloom
And sits in Sirius' disc all night,
Till day makes him retrace his flight
With smell of burning on every plume,
Back past the sun to an earthly room.
His gains in heaven are what they are.
Yet some say Love by being thrall
And simply staying possesses all
In several beauty that Thought fares far
To find fused in another star.

A striking low-angle shot, emphasizing the height and grandeur of the ancient structures against the vast blue sky.
The towering obelisk on the right and the colossal statue fragment on the left create a strong diagonal line, drawing the eye upwards and adding depth to the scene. The framing by the surrounding stone structures further enhances the sense of scale and enclosure. The large weathered stone structures on the left, possibly parts of colossal statues or temple pylons, frame the scene. These ruins hint at the grand scale of the ancient temple complex and the artistry of the period.
The bright overhead sunlight rays create harsh shadows and highlights, visibly flaring from the top center, indicating a direct light source and adding a dramatic effect to the sky. This strong contrast accentuates the textures of the ancient stone.
The obelisk symbolized a connection between the earthly and divine realms.
The composition highlights the monumental scale and enduring presence of these ancient artifacts.

If you ever get to Rovinj, you'll surely want to get near the Church of Saint Euphemia, there's a really nice view over there, great for a sunset.
This impressive tree caught my eye and made the sunset even more special.
Just think of all the sunsets he's witnessed.
The majority of photographs actually capture reflected light, i.e the light emitted by earthly objects, when it has practically lost most of its original intensity and might ... I myself am a huge fan of low lighted, long shutter speed images ... In any case to successfully capture light as actually emitted by the "MIGHTY" sun is always a challenge for the photographer ...
The best hours to do this still is and will always remain the "golden hours" ... The hours of the day when sunlight turns from white to gold, mainly dew to sun's position in the sky and the diffusion of its light through the thicker part of earth's atmosphere ... When this moment comes, find an interesting foreground figure and either create a back-light frame (turning the foreground figure into a recognizable shade) or simultaneously use fill in flash at its full intensity to capture foreground detail as well ...
I really adore the photos on which every visible detail tells a story ....

DEN BOSCH - Brabants Museum.
Modefotograaf Tim Walker ziet Bosch The Garden of Earthly Delights.

“Dread is an expression of our insecurity in this earthly life, a realization that we are never and can never be completely “sure” in the sense of possessing a definitive and established spiritual status. It means that we cannot any longer hope in ourselves, in our wisdom, our virtues, our fidelity. We see too clearly that all that is “ours” is nothing, and can completely fail us. In other words, we no longer rely on what we “have,” what has been given by our past, what has been required. We are open to God and to his mercy in the inscrutable future and our trust is entirely in his grace, which will support our liberty in the emptiness where we will confront unforeseen decisions. Only when we have descended in dread to the center of our own nothingness, by His grace and His guidance, can we be led by Him, in His own time, to find Him in losing ourselves.”
- Thomas Merton from The Climate of Monastic Prayer
At the beginning of the mystical journey, the soul is so captivated by the love of God that in the rush of passionate desire, like a lover’s flight to her beloved on a summer night, everything “earthly” that might delay and distract love on this journey is plunged into darkness: the only light is desire itself. But God brings us out of these beginnings and leads us on.

The Garden of Earthly Delights
In January 2015, Nicola Erni commissioned British fashion photographer Tim Walker to create a series of photographs of his own choice. Exactly a year later, Factum Arte was approached by Walker and Erni through an introduction by Michael Hoppen (founder & director of the Michael Hoppen Gallery, London), to produce a series of 27 vast digital prints of images taken by the photographer.
Tim Walker´s work will be on view at the Noordbrabants Museum in the Netherlands as part of the exhibition: Tim Walker: The Garden of Earthly Delights, Bosch through the eyes of a fashion photographer (November 4 - February 25, 2018)

A SLUMBER did my spirit seal;
I had no human fears:
She seem'd a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.
No motion has she now, no force;
She neither hears nor sees;
Roll'd round in earth's diurnal course
With rocks, and stones, and trees.
