The rock spires on the middle fork of the Gila River reminded me of church spires. By themselves, they're impressive and awe inspiring and beautiful. They could almost be mistaken for heavenly objects themselves.
Because they are...and they aren't.
In this image, the heavens are clearly separate, providing their own light and beauty--star trails integrated over the course of 3 hours. These spires stretch toward the heavens, aspiring to be more than the earthbound rocks they are. It's as if they forgot that they came from the heavens, and earthbound or not, they've never actually left.
All the stuff in this image came from stars.
The scene reminds me of church, because so many of us go seeking to secure our spot in heaven. We go and start to feel like we're elevated from the rest of the earth--like these spires.
And then something reminds us we still tied to this place. We screw up. Someone we love gets hurt. A pandemic hits. All of life's storms erode us a little. Or a lot.
Do we submit one more time to the idea that if we just go to church enough that pain will no longer be a part of our existence?
What if instead of striving to be where we're not, we accept where we are? What if instead of striving to be someone we're not, we accept who we are?
Like the rock pillars in the Gila, all the matter that comprises our bodies was forged in stars. We are from the heavens. All of us. Even the flat-earthers. And earthbound or orbiting, we haven't left the heavens.
Could it be the same with the kingdom Jesus spoke of? It's here--thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. It comes not by reaching out to pull heaven here, but recognizing that God has always been with us--maybe we see that in our good times. But God is with us especially in our trying times, our pain, our sorrow, and our love. Maybe the most significant way we reach for heaven is through solidarity with those who are in pain, who mourn, who struggle, who are oppressed--through acts of love the kingdom of heaven is revealed in our lives.
Maybe that's really church.
Reaching up.
Circling.
Grounded.
Peace and cheers!

🇬🇧 This is the moment when the balloon truly begins to breathe. Bent backs, raised arms, eyes fixed upward as the canvas slowly fills and gains weight, volume, presence. What fascinates me here is the mix of generations and postures: boys, men, jackets, sweaters, hands gripping fabric with the same instinctive care. No one gives orders, yet everyone knows what to do.
I wanted to capture that fragile balance between effort and trust — the instant when the balloon is still earthbound, but already asking to become sky.

Went to take some long exposure shots of the water under the pier and ended up seeing these "anticrepuscular" rays. These rays are emerging from the *West*, just before sun*rise*. They're actually parallel rays, with their convergence caused by an Earthbound illusion. Naples, Florida.
Here is a quick shot to show the Chapel with its new sign. This chapel can be made available to those seeking SL marriage and handfastings.... those interested should contact Daisy or I and we will arrange the details. People are also more then welcome to come and explore on the sim. Behind the chapel is a little bench for some innocent cuddling and conversation... on the picture to the right, on the other side of the stream is the waterfall fountain I built for Daisy... She's turned it into a nice place to dance... once there click on the sword to bring up dance balls.
:)
I believe the chapel was created by Kizmet...the trees are mostly from 3d Trees.

I seek out this statue every time I visit the local cemetery it inhabits. I can never remember exactly where it is, and I always become a bit apprehensive as I'm wandering around searching. It doesn't help that someone keeps moving the figurine about. I never seem to find it in exactly the same position. My anxiety is tied to an expectation that it will either be gone, or completely shattered leaving only a debris trail. Yet so far, I always seem to find it intact, though a bit more weathered with each passing encounter. Not sure why I feel this sense of attachment. The bond probably formed when I first photographed it. It made me feel connected with this place, and so I naturally looked forward to seeing it again. Every subsequent meeting reinforcing the prior, and forging another link in the memory chain that I find myself dragging around. Drag makes it sound like a burden, which it is not. But I'm not sure how else to phrase it. What's always captivated me about this statue is the depiction of an angel as a very earthbound woman. Take away her wings and this is basically a rather prim looking 19th century woman. The feminine qualities outweigh the angelic. Yet there's an unrestrained haunting quality. I photograph it each time I see it. But I never seem to get quite the same results. I sensed a pensive solemnity on this visit. No doubt I often impart my own feelings onto photos. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, so long as you realize that's what's happening.

Rising from the ancient sands of Goblin Valley, this towering hoodoo stands like the weathered throne of celestial beings long forgotten. The Milky Way swirls above, a cosmic river of stardust that once guided the Starborn—mythical watchers of the night. Bathed in the glow of distant galaxies and the subtle warmth of earthbound light, this silent sentinel remains, untouched by time, whispering stories of the universe to those who dare to listen.

Healing-mountain
Saddle your soul and let it ride
With blind eyes, you’ll surely find the way
Draw your breath in – let your thoughts fly
Let it out slowly – on winds you’ll bide
The spindle spins, the thoughts entwine revolving sight
The enchantment song lures the soul from its shape
Out through the door, through the cobweb-veil
Out borne on bare feet, a heavy burden
Out in your innermost, a steep trail ahead
High upon Healing-Peak, nine maidens await
At the first stop where paths cross, you pause
Leave clothes behind and all you own
Where you are heading, they’ll be of no use
The burden lightens, but heavy is the trail ahead
At the second stop where paths cross, you pause
Leave time behind, and weighty thoughts
Where you are headed, they’ll be of no use
The burden lightens, but heavy is the trail ahead
At the third stop where paths cross, you pause
Leave fears behind, let fall all masks
Where you are headed, they’ll be of no use
The burden lightens, but heavy is the trail ahead
Naked at the top, the mountain knows you
North waves an eagle-wing, the wind it draws
The shadow-women dance about you
They sing for you, chanting powerful runes
Wounds and sickness
Of marrow and blood
Of meat and bone
Of flesh and skin
into weather and wind
you fade
I summon you into the mountain blue
Where neither sun nor moonshine can reach you
I summon you into the forest where no one dwells
and out to the sea where no man rows
Deep beneath an earthbound stone
out of harm’s way
Run through the rivers
and roll with the ocean tides
Into weather and wind you fade
Neither sun nor moonshine can reach you
Sink in the sea where no man rows
Run through the rivers
and roll with the ocean tides
Healing-mountain stands for eternity
It comforts the sick and the sore
Each and every one who assails that rock
Will find their lifelong ailment cured
Leave it behind on Healing-Peak
Where the rivers and streams
dance northwards and down
That mountain mends all those who climb

"When the magic hour arrives, my thoughts center on light rather than on the landscape. I search for perfect light, then hunt for something earthbound to match with it." --Galen Rowell
I've deeply embraced this rule as I've moved forward in my photography. Although the interesting occurance that's transcended Galen is the technology that's boosted our ability to capture moments previously impossible with film. Another quote by Galen was incredibly fortuitous as he didn't have anywhere near the dynamic range of modern insurments... "I began to realize that the camera sees the world differently than the human eye and that sometimes those differences can make a photograph more powerful than what you actually observed."
While up on the Bruce Peninsula, I made a stop, a few times actually, to a local nursery in Red Bay called Earthbound Gardens...such wonderful people, activities, plant material, coffee and gardens to view and shoot in. This is one of the vignettes with a painterly twist in one of the areas of the garden that you can wonder...they specialize in lilies and dayliles...of which four came home with me...LOL! They have a wonderful afternoon local musicans concert series on Sunday's that is a great way to spend the afternoon...and we did!
This image and the song were created for each other—like two echoes of the same dream. If you'd like, you can follow the link and listen while gazing at the artwork. Maybe you'll feel the story they whisper together. Hope you enjoy the moment!
Blood-red moon, silent above,
Whispers secrets, quietly of love.
I’ve touched the sky, felt the pull to leave,
But found my heart tangled in life's subtle weave.
I stay for the kitten's tender purr,
Pages worn, where stories stir.
Pencil sketches, lines of grace,
A quiet life, my sacred place.
Melodies rise, gentle guitar strings,
Echo softly, memories they bring.
Plants that grow with each whispered care,
Teach my heart patience, how to repair.
I stay for the kitten's tender purr,
Pages worn, where stories stir.
Pencil sketches, lines of grace,
A quiet life, my sacred place.
Fragile, fleeting, this earthly bloom,
Yet beauty thrives beneath this moon.
I choose this sweetness, fragile and true,
My heart earthbound, anchored to you.
Blood-red moon, guide my way,
Simple treasures hold me today.
In quiet longing, I'll softly roam,
Forever finding my way back home.

A triathlon was in progress when I was out walking on the Lake Siskiyou Trail. I didn't think I would see any wildlife, what with the loudspeaker and ungainly splashing human swimmers. Fortunately there were a couple of these gals out and about who have the swimming down far better than any human, and of course are laughing at us earthbound humans when they soar into the sky. She's also an expert diver and fisher woman, so maybe she's actually a quatroathlete! Common Merganser

The flame burns beneath the balloon, unseen but essential.
In this moment everything happens at ground level: trousers, shoes, movement, heat. No heroic gestures, no spectacle yet — just the quiet, decisive work that makes flight possible.
I was interested in photographing this exact phase: when the balloon is still heavy, earthbound, and the fire does its patient job. The image is imperfect, blurred, fragmented — but deliberately so. It’s a reminder that before rising into the sky, everything must pass through effort, coordination, and a little controlled chaos.
The magic comes later. Here, it’s all about trust in the process… and standing close enough to feel the heat.
🇮🇹

You know how it goes, one look out the window, and the sky looks bleak. You almost talk yourself out of going but something inside you resists the voice of reason telling you to go back to bed.
As you drive to the location you see a faint blush of colour in the East. You start thinking ”Maybe, just maybe”. By the time you pull up and park, that blush has transformed into a purple glow and you’re now cursing yourself for not getting up 40 minutes earlier.
Panicked and rushed, you drag your poorly arranged camera bag, leave the car and then shamble down the sketchy rock face with reckless abandon. You’re cursing that 2kg telephoto lens, 2 jackets, and a boatload of pointless accessories that won’t be needed for this shoot.
Your heart is racing as you think “Will I get set up in time before this light show fades off?”.
With trembling hands, you yank the camera out of the bag, slap it on your tripod, and breathe a sigh of relief. This is short-lived as the ‘memory card full’ warning diminishes your chances of getting your shit together in time for this fleeting moment.
You also realize you just dropped your lens cap in the wet sand, that’s just great.
You clumsily fumble for a crusty old memory card that still has some videos of the Faroe Islands circa 2019 but there’s a smidge of space left on it, so you accept it.
Just as you’re focusing on your first composition the light goes into overdrive while all earthbound subjects begin to glow an almost eerie red colour. That’s the moment that your battery (currently at 19%) decides to give up the ghost and breathe its last breath.
You stomp over to the camera bag in a fit of rage, plop the battery out of your B camera, stomp back to the camera on the tripod and switch out the battery. At this point, you can’t decide if you’re enraged or enraptured, the two emotions war within you as you finish framing up your first shot.
You shoot that first frame, check the focus, and then decide you are indeed enraptured, rage swiftly forgotten.
Like a maniac, you rattle off several frames, making adjustments to the composition while muttering to yourself and occasionally punching the air in exuberant joy. You hear a ”Wow” from your loved one who’s just decided to leave the warmth of the car to join you on the beach so you turn around and give her the manic grin of triumph.
It’s a golden moment that you’ll cherish for the rest of your life.
These are the moments that we live for. As frustrating and dangerous as they sometimes might be, it’s impossible to live a full life without some element of risk or sacrifice.
Bagging the shot is just part of what I call ‘The Landscape Photographers Condition‘. The rest is that inner war, that delicate balance between crushing disappointment and ecstatic success, and also that indomitable spirit that we all share.
No matter how many times we make the walk of shame, it’s those rare golden moments of spectacular light, perfect tides, and fumbling fingers that make life worth living.
Hopefully, that resonates with you.
One of the best things about photography is that you get to witness moments like this and the magic that light renders on its earthbound subjects.
Until I shot this image, it never occurred to me that water casts its own shadow. I was entranced by the collapsing waves which were transformed into momentary waterfalls.
Here you can see a wave collapsing half a second after it exploded against a retreating wave. It appears darker because the sun hits the other side and casts the inside in shadow.
I just love that contrast between dark and light.
I blended three shots of the same composition - each a few seconds apart.
I shot the frames in high speed continuous burst mode at around 1000th of a second using AF.
While I captured thousands of frames that day, it's the ones of the wave collapsing that caught my attention.
To this day I still stare at those frames and find something new.
Thanks for looking

UPDATE 2: I wasn't crazy about my original name for this, Arches of Light, but there is so much going on it's hard to settle on something. Then it dawned on my that this reminds me of the Bifrost Bridge from the Thor movie/Norse mythology. The vertical pole is reminiscent of Heimdall's staff.
UPDATE: Thanks Flickr community for faving and commenting this onto Explore. This is a stitch of 6 images - f2.8, 20 seconds (I accidentally clicked it down from 25 which is what it probably should have been), 14mm Rokinon, ISO 400, Nikon D600.
I arrived at this bridge hoping for a nice shot of the bright part of the Milky Way reflected on the water. After an unnerving nighttime hike I finally arrived at the bridge, an old train thoroughfare converted to the Trail of the Couer d'Alenes bike trail. (I've had some scary encounters in the past with glowing eyeballs haunting me during night hikes and I never seem to have my bear spray when I need it.) When I got to the bridge I realized it would be too windy. I noticed a lot of apparent light pollution to the north. It looked like Auroras but I didn't think it would be possible to see it so brightly that far south. When I confirmed the green glow of the Aurora on my camera screen I set up my D7000 and Tokina 11-16mm for a timelapse and went to work trying to compose this bridge feature with my D600 and Rokinon 14mm. After an hour the Milky Way finally rose high enough to get this shot. I wasn't sure how the stitch would go but it was fairly easy. Instead of painting the bridge structure with my flashlight, which would have created shadows and a distracting brightness I relied on the dim glow of the surrounding lights to subtly light it up.
When it comes to the Aurora I find the challenge always is to find a compelling foreground object that invites the viewer to place themselves at the scene. The Lights are so bright and colorful and big that when they are isolated they are beautiful but not very compelling (to me). It's hard to grasp the scale and mystery without an earthbound feature of some kind. I feel the same way about the Milky Way and the night sky in general.
ORIGINAL NOTE: Trail of the Couer d'Alenes Bridge at the center, Northern Lights hovering over Coeur d'Alene Lake to the left, the brightest part of the Milky Way rising over the lights of St. Maries and Heyburn State Park to the right - This is one crazy composition, but the centered bridge somehow seems to hold it together.
If you see rainbows from the air they are actually circular, which begs the question wheres the gold. This is a close as I've got being earthbound
"The perception of the horizon is an earthbound event;
all horizons disappear in space,
and we are left shorn of the sweet roots
that have held us to the earth,
challenged to imagine what is truly present just before us,
a unified and seemingly limitless universe."
~ Eugene Kennedy ~
HAPPY EARTH DAY!
If it's you, then it's me
and when it's you
I can clearly see
all that we can truly be
if only life could let it be
so to Spring we now turn
as if Winter never happened
upon our lowest ebb
the question answers instead
for the puzzles that lie ahead
of all we roam in sickness and in health
this is no ordinary world, or life at that
for every unblinking stoke
of the fire of silhouetted Oak
within the given hope it may invoke
it's the unflinching stipulation of life over departure
fluvial or landbased, aviating dreams earthbound
every reason is contraindicative
meandering flight of aquatic contrail still active
we're here to stay so long as we can forgive...
..any reason under the Sun
why we shouldn't celebrate a world
of yours, of mine, of one of a kind
that offers the path when combined
to the place so desired and divined.

Looking more like a hairy space alien than an earthbound tree, this moss covered, root infested Sitka Spruce reposed in the Hoh Rain Forest. I wondered what you would find within those tentacles if you were to look. To be honest, I was a little scared to wade in and check it out.

At first, I was cursing the giant streetlamp left on at the nearby visitor centre.
I had no option but to shoot anyway and then see if I could fix it on post.
After editing the image however, I decided that I actually really enjoyed that warm light on that impressive pinnacle.
If you've ever shot a moonscape in the dead of night, you'll recognize the look of sunlight bouncing off the moon and lighting earthbound subjects a lot like this.

In the final photo I posted yesterday you would have seen the long range shot from the George Town lookout. Ten kilometres away is the promontory known as Low Head. Low Head is now synonymous with its iconic lighthouse.
Here is a shot with my Tamron SP Di VC USD G2 600mm lens. This is a fine lens and there is nothing wrong here with it or my Autofocus. This is a perfect example of the effects of wind and haze on long distance landscapes. Let me explain with a little physics lesson. [All those years watching Prof. Julius Sumner Miller when I grew up have born fruit. www.facebook.com/Igrewupinmortdale2223/videos/professor-j... ]
First, haze is simply the scattering of light off minute dust particles in the air. In drier conditions it is always more hazy and especially when it is windy. The wind whips up dust from the ground and these particles fill the air. As the photons of light strike them they are scattered making the air seem "hazy".
Second, the effect of wind is more noticeable the further one is away from the object. Wind is simply moving air or turbulence. Now 10 kilometres of distance means a lot of air is between us and the Low Head lighthouse. You can see that turbulence very clearly in this "failed" photograph. Nothing can be done to sharpen this shot because the air is shimmering with the turbulence of the wind and another form of haze in summer conditions: Heat haze. Heat haze is rising pockets of warmer air which is reflected off the surface of the earth.
Now this is a small scale disturbance of "seeing" (as astronomers call it). And this is the reason why the Hubble Space Telescope, beyond the reaches and turbulence of the earth's atmosphere, can see deeper into the universe than much larger earthbound telescopes.
So there is nothing I could do in these conditions to get a good long shot. But this photograph is useful for the lesson it provides us.
