From what it was to what it will be, earth moving equipment shaping the future endlessly at the end of the street day after day reshaping the topography for the purpose of building more and more houses.

Somewhere out in the bush north of Clermont in Central Queensland, we came across an earthmoving business in the bush. You can't miss it though with a bulldozer sitting on a pole. Nowhere as good as an Osprey on a pole!

Earthmoving on the downtown site of the old Sav-a-Lot grocery store downtown. It's supposed to be housing and retail but it remains to seen, housing for whom.

A Raymond L Brown repair area with Aveling Barford dump trucks in various stages of repair. Just visible in the background is a 40ft trailer they used as a mobile workshop, and also one of their Draglines.I am fairly certain this was on a Earthmoving job at Blashford nr Ringwood Hampshire. This area had a lot of Gravel pits in the 1970s/80s.RMC,ARC and Tarmac all had pits and ARC had a Conbloc plant. A look on Google maps now shows the extent of the workings which is now a Nature Reserve.

Otherwise known as the Great Machinery Mile, this collection of pastoral equipment hosts a range of equipment from standing engines to earthmoving machinery. A wonderful display of machinery, some of it very rare and almost all collected within 100 miles of the town, can be seen.

Visitors can expect to see many forms of old machinery, including a 1917 Ruston Proctor Tractor (only two more of this model left in the world), Steam Devil, a big Excavator driven by three horse powered steam engine, which runs along one railway line. Made in 1880 and sold in 1882, it would be safe to say this excavator is the only remaining one of its kind. There’s also a 12 tonne Stuart Tank that has been converted to a dozer; the first series grader made by Caterpillar in 1935, an early 1900 Lacre Light Truck, and a 1914 Republic Truck.

Ilfracombe, Queensland:

Ilfracombe, a small railway town in central-western Queensland, is on the Landsborough Highway, 600km west of Rockhampton. The nearest large town is Longreach, 30km to the west.

Situated west of the Barcoo River, the Ilfracombe district was explored by the New South Wales Surveyor-General, Thomas Mitchell in 1846, by Edmund Kennedy in 1847, and by William Landsborough in 1862. Pastoral occupation followed Landsborough's expedition, the first pastoral station occupied in 1863, and the Portland Downs station (which continues until this day) taken up soon afterwards. In the early 1870s the New Zealand and Australia Land Company (headquartered in Scotland) acquired a vast tract, 'Wellshot' comprising almost half of the territory of the future shire. Wellshot Station, named after a major shareholder's Glasgow estate, was broken up for closer-settlement in 1948.

In 1890 the colonial government indicated its intention to extend the railway line from Barcaldine to Longreach and named a temporary terminus 'Ilfracombe', apparently so as to clearly distinguish the new railhead from Wellshot Station, the latter name having given over to the district generally. Ilfracombe had a brief boom: its status as temporary railhead in the early 1890s gave rise to five hotels and several businesses. A school opened in 1893, Anglican and Catholic churches within a few years, and artesian water supplemented the meagre town dam supply in 1896.

Teamsters or carriers as they were sometimes known, provided an essential service of carrying goods and stock across trackless country to the new stations of western Queensland. The first teamsters into a new country were limited to the use of drays, which were more manoeuvrable than wagons. Among the essential equipment of these first teamsters were axes to clear tracks of land, picks, and shovels to make creek crossings and a piece of brightly coloured rag. The rag was tied to a wheel so that its revolutions could be easily counted. These rough measurements of distance gave carriers a guide for cartage charges and provided a bush standard which remained in use until the introduction of surveyors and roadmakers. Ilfracombe provided work for teamsters up until a branch railway line was opened from Jericho to Blackall in 1908. At this time many teamsters traded in their horse and ox and replaced them with motor lorries. Others hung up their reins and looked for work with the railways or at the wool scour which opened in Ilfracombe in 1898/1899.

In 1902 widespread drought depressed the local economy, and, according to local historian Peter Forrest, within two years Ilfracombe's 'golden years were over'. Ilfracombe Shire was severed from the existing Aramac division in 1903 and the post office was converted to a shire office, which functioned in that manner until 1966. The surrounding pastoral stations employed workforces sufficient to keep three town hotels going up until the 1920s. During its heyday, Ilfracombe was very much a town of firsts - in the 1890s Wellshot Station boasted the largest head count of sheep in the world, while Beaconsfield Station, to the town's north, developed innovative sheep wash that was at the forefront of wool processing technology (the ruins of which are listed on the Queensland heritage register). The motorised postal service from Ilfracombe to Isisford, begun in 1910, was Australia's first.

Other town facilities, though, were rudimentary, the galvanized iron housing decidedly primitive by the onset of the postwar years. The wool-boom of the 1950s saw a spurt of civic improvements; a swimming pool was built in 1948, a war memorial park (1951), reticulated water (1953), a shire hall (1956), and new shire offices in 1966. The collapse of wool prices in the late 1960s ended Ilfracombe's second episode of prosperity, with many rural workers laid off, sheep properties operating on rationalised workforces.

Ilfracombe today is a one-pub town, (the Wellshot Hotel), and has a shire hall, a racecourse (two meetings a year), a caravan park, the State primary school, a swimming pool, a golf course, two churches, and machinery and heritage museums. Romani Hall (1999) has a display dedicated to the 2/14th Ilfracombe Light Horse Troop. Ilfracombe's best known citizen is Dame Quentin Bryce, Governor of Queensland 2003 - 2008, and Governor General of Australia from 2008 - 2014.

This crawler wheel is part of a logging display on the side of Highway 1 at Yale BC which is about 30km up the Fraser River Canyon from the town of Hope BC.

I could find nothing specific to the manufacture of the Logging Special but below is a short history of the Trackson Co. of Milwaukee, Wisc, USA.

Trackson commenced business in Milwaukee in 1922 and built tracked attachments for primarily Fordson tractors, initially - then built tracked attachments for other tractor manufacturers. The early Trackson tracked attachments were popular on tractors used for road grader power units, as well as for tractors used in poor ground conditions.

The Trackson company was owned by Arnie Frahlic, and the chief engineer was Walter Stiemke. Sometime in the early 1930s, Walter Stiemke recognized the potential of combining the Trackson track system with the Lessman Manufacturing Company lifting mechanism, for digging or excavating.

Stiemke convinced the owner of Trackson, Arnie Frahlic, to buy the Lessman Manufacturing Co to pursue a marriage of the two systems - for the machine sales opportunity, as well as the earthmoving work - that Stiemke felt was possible by combining the two systems.

Trackson designed a cable lift shovel in 1936, for a tractor built by Caterpillar Inc. In 1937, Caterpillar announced the "Trackson Shovel option" for the Caterpillar Thirty (6G series - later known as the R4). By 1938, Trackson had produced a revised cable shovel model, known as the T4, fitted to the Caterpillar D4 tractor.

Within a few years, there were 4 Trackson cable loaders or shovels available, all based on Caterpillar crawlers. The T2 Trackson cable shovel was fitted to the Caterpillar D2 - the T4 to the Cat D4 - the T6 to the Cat D6 - and the T7, fitted to the Cat D7. The crawler tractors were modified for Trackson shovel use by being fitted with longer trackframes, to assist with stability when the bucket was being carried at a height. Sometime in the mid-1940s, the name "Traxcavator" was coined by the Trackson company for their cable shovel machines.

Trackson, in the 1940s, also built pipelayers on Caterpillar tractors and other attachments such as truck mounted cranes and shovels.

In 1948, collaboration between Caterpillar and Trackson engineers saw the development of the HT4 Trackson hydraulic shovel. This was an all-new hydraulic shovel-loader design, integrated with the current model D4 tractor. The HT4 sold alongside the cable Traxacavators, until 1952, when the cable Traxcavator line ceased production.

In December 1951 the Caterpillar Company purchased the Trackson Company, and the cable Traxcavators and the HT4, became Caterpillar Traxcavators.

In late 1952, the all-new No.6 Caterpillar Shovel was announced by Caterpillar, and cable Traxcavator production ceased. The Caterpillar HT4 and No.6 Shovel were the only hydraulic Traxcavators available from Caterpillar until the all-new 933, 955 and 977 made their appearance in early 1955. The name "Traxcavator" was a registered Caterpillar brand name for many years, but has developed into common usage to describe any tracked shovel/loader.

The manitou is a good or evil spirit that serves as an object of reverence among some Native American peoples. But Manitou is also a French company specializing in the manufacture of handling, lifting and earthmoving equipment for agriculture, construction and industry. And that's the manitou that we see here at South Street Seaport.

Pardoes Promenade 11/02/2022 10h54

In addition to the construction of the new hotel at the entrance of the park, the Pardoes Promenade is being reconstructed. Apparently it will be ready this year so that the visual damage of visitors after passing the construction site is limited and people quickly become enchanted by the wonders of the Efteling.

At the right Fabula and at the left the Sprookjesbos (Fairytale Forest)

Pardoes Promenade

The Pardoes Promenade is the broad, expansive avenue that connects the Dwarrelplein with the Hartenhof Square in front of Symbolica. The avenue was designed in unison with the former interpretation of that place, the Brink, and is executed in the visual language of the World of Pardoes. The primary goal of the Pardoes Promenade is the supply of visitors from the entrance to the various park areas, and vice versa at the end of the day. The avenue of 21 meters wide and 270 meters long thus serves as the main vein of the park. There are dozens of eye-catching bronze-colored lanterns, the colossal Wonderwachters lampposts.

The promenade was opened in 2000. It was created within the implementation of the so-called Butterfly Vision on the park, with Promenade and Brink as "body" and the four surrounding empires as colorful "wings", and is a design by landscape architect Mariëlle Kok of Grontmij in collaboration with Henny Knoet and Chris van Grinsven from the Efteling.
