Pavel Petrovich Melnikov (Russian: Павел ŠŸŠµŃ‚рович Мельников, 3 August [O.S. 22 July] 1804 – 3 August [O.S. 22 July] 1880 in Lyuban) was a Russian engineer and administrator who, in his capacity as Transport Minister, was in a large measure responsible for the introduction of railroad construction in Imperial Russia.

In 1825 Melnikov graduated at the head of his class from the Institute of Transport Engineers (predecessor of the St. Petersburg State Transport University) in the School for Communication Routes with the rank of Lieutenant in the Corps of Transport Engineers. He remained as a teacher at the Institute, becoming professor of applied mechanics in 1833. He also took part in several construction projects to improve the Russian network of rivers and canals. In 1833 he joined the St. Petersburg Artillery School. he was also responsible for repairing the wooden cupola of the Trinity Cathedral in St Petersburg. In the Summer of 1839 Melnikov and another colonel, Nikolai Osipovich Kraft (1798-1857), were sent to the United States to inspect its railroad system and recommend technology to be used in Russia. The travellers returned in the autumn of 1840.

The report regarding U.S. railroads which Melnikov compiled upon his and Kraft's return to their homeland, for submission to the imperial Russian authorities, is a massive contribution to American industrial and transportation history. Written in longhand in 1841 and now found in manuscript form in the library of St. Petersburg State Transportation University, this 3-part, 664-page work is entitled Technical Description of the railways of the North American States (Opisanie v tekhnicheskom otnoshenii zheleznykh dorog Severoamerikanskikh Shtatov). In 1842, the journal Zhurnal Putei Soobshcheniya (Transport Journal) provided readers with extensive access to Melnikov's findings by publishing them in serial form in volume (Tom) II, book (Kniga) 1, pages 19–85; and in book 2, pages 95 to 197. A further separate article, entitled "Foundations of Railways," is in book 3 for 1842, pages 209-265. Still another article, "Regarding operations to outfit (ustroistvo) railways in the North American States," is in volume II, book 4, pages 285-374 (extensively covering earthmoving tasks, principally), and volume III, book 1, pages 1–70. Taken together, these writings are qualitatively on a par with those of Franz Anton von Gerstner, who visited the United States for the same purpose at the same time and also produced a multivolume compilation on U.S. transportation of that time, available in English under the title EARLY AMERICAN RAILROADS.

Melnikov was sufficiently observant about America to note on page 65 of the Journal Article, volume I, book I, that the United States was a nation that was "little inclined to be subjected to the influence of routine," i.e. had a palpable dynamism.

Based on his experience Melnikov suggested the adoption of a 5-foot wide gauge for the planned Moscow–St. Petersburg Railway. (Previously, only a short line connecting St. Petersburg to Tsarskoe Selo had been built in 1836–37 under Franz Anton von Gerstner.) The gauge was approved as the new standard on 12 September 1842.

When construction of the Moscow–St. Petersburg Railway began in 1842 Melnikov was appointed to manage the construction of its northern part. From 1862 he was the chief manager of the railway, served as the Transport Minister from 1866 to 1869 and as a member of the Railroads Committee from 1870 to 1875.

Melnikov also contributed to water transportation systems and other engineering projects. He is the author of the first books about railroad construction ever written in Russian.

Once again another shot from the Maitland truck show. This Mack (and the green Chev truck I posted earlier) belonged to the late Fred Goldspring. Fred began his truck business carrying logs and timber then eventually the company became Goldsprings Earthmoving and Heavy Haulage. The company is now operated by Fred's sons Mark and Peter. My daughter, Ashlee is an administration assistant for the company.

"1995 ERF EC14.50TD4 8x4 200t 5th wheel artic' tractor unit

Chassis No. 79435

Engine No. 23235530

This is one of only three 8x4 200 tonne tractor units ever built by ERF and is the only one left in Europe, the other two having been shipped over to Africa in recent years following use in heavy plant haulage from Scotland to ports in England. DIG 5258 was originally acquired by the Electricity Supply Board from ERF along with a Nicholls 10 axle trailer for transporting heavy transformers throughout Ireland. The next owner was Aylward Heavy Haulage who purchased the outfit at auction in order to get the trailer, they then sold the tractor unit on to the vendors business. Just 100,000 kilometres have been covered in total with just around 15,000kms by the current owner moving heavy earthmoving equipment around Ireland until the recession of 2007, many of the tyres are stated to be original fitment. The straight six 500HP Cummins big cam engine is equipped with a torque clutch, ZF 16 speed gearbox driving through SISU rear axles rated at 32 tonnes on SISU suspension. For collectors of ERFs this is an absolutely one off opportunity to own one of just 3 units 2 of which may no longer exist. Described as very good all round with just the paint work requiring a refresh the ERF is offered for sale with current V5C documentation."

Estimate - £13,000 to £16,000. Sold for £14,250.

Now we really are serious! I would have thought that a truck this old used for moving rock would have been in really rough condition. What a great restoration. This brute sports a Cummins HRB600, 165HP diesel engine.

From Wikipedia:

"The Euclid Company of Ohio was a company specialized in heavy equipment for earthmoving, namely dump trucks and wheel tractor-scrapers, that operated from the United States of America from the 1920s to the 1950s, then it was purchased and converted into a section of General Motors and later on by Hitachi Construction Machinery."

Pardoes Promenade 11/02/2022 10h54

In addition to the construction of the new hotel at the entrance of the park, the Pardoes Promenade is being reconstructed. Apparently it will be ready this year so that the visual damage of visitors after passing the construction site is limited and people quickly become enchanted by the wonders of the Efteling.

Looking from the level of Fabula in the direction of the entrance (exit) and Huis van de Vijf Zintuigen (House of the Five Senses).

Pardoes Promenade

The Pardoes Promenade is the broad, expansive avenue that connects the Dwarrelplein with the Hartenhof Square in front of Symbolica. The avenue was designed in unison with the former interpretation of that place, the Brink, and is executed in the visual language of the World of Pardoes. The primary goal of the Pardoes Promenade is the supply of visitors from the entrance to the various park areas, and vice versa at the end of the day. The avenue of 21 meters wide and 270 meters long thus serves as the main vein of the park. There are dozens of eye-catching bronze-colored lanterns, the colossal Wonderwachters lampposts.

The promenade was opened in 2000. It was created within the implementation of the so-called Butterfly Vision on the park, with Promenade and Brink as "body" and the four surrounding empires as colorful "wings", and is a design by landscape architect Mariƫlle Kok of Grontmij in collaboration with Henny Knoet and Chris van Grinsven from the Efteling.
