I’ve traveled the world twice over,

Met the famous; saints and sinners,

Poets and artists, kings and queens,

Old stars and hopeful beginners,

I’ve been where no one’s been before,

Learned secrets from writers and cooks

All with one library ticket

To the wonderful world of books.

~JANICE JAMES

Regulars may remember that several years ago, an exploration followed Dorset's River Frome from source to mouth. In this photo, not far from Maiden Newton Station, our new exploration along the route of the Bridport Railway branch line crosses the route of the R. Frome exploration.

To the top and right, the embankment of the railway line can be seen under which the river flows. Adjacent and In the foreground, an old public right-of-way bridge crosses the Frome. More or less in the middle of the photo, a sluice gate can also be seen that can regulate the flow depending on the weather conditions though how often it is still used I do not know.

Incidentally, running along the valley is part of the Macmillan Way, a 290 mile / 470 kms trail from Boston, Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury, Dorset. It is named after the Macmillan Charity dedicated to cancer relief.

A scene from the movie Transformers 3 was filmed in this building.

Watch a video I shot of this church - nine minutes long - on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_twF8luodI

This church was featured in an episode of the TV show Life After People.

The city of Gary, Indiana was founded as a booming steel city as the twentieth century passed, and areas downtown saw the construction of several impressive buildings during these prosperous early years. In 1925, a cornerstone ceremony took place at 577 Washington St. to commemorate the construction of a Gothic Revival church called City Methodist. It was completed 21 months later, at the cost of one million dollars - $385,000 of which was contributed by the United States Steel Corp. (which also founded the city). Elbert Gary, the chairman of U.S. Steel and origin of the city's name, donated a Skinner organ as well. The Bedford limestone structure consisted of a 50-foot tall sanctuary nave and elaborate stonework, and was able to seat 950 worshipers; City Methodist had a congregation of nearly 3,000 members in its heyday. The building was also home to Seaman Hall - a 1,000 seat auditorium, and a gymnasium with a full size basketball court. Storefronts were built into the building, with hopes that the income would offset the enormous maintenance costs.

During the 1920s, Pastor William Seaman rallied against the power of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana, and welcomed black worshipers into City Methodist during a time when African Americans were not permitted in "white churches."

Gary entered a downward spiral during the 1960s, like many other industrial cities during the period. As U.S. Steel employment dwindled, the residents of Gary moved to nearby suburbs; then as jobs left downtown, city many residents moved out altogether while crime and poverty rose. By 1973 the church's congregation had only 300 members and by 1975 the Methodists moved out of the structure. A second congregation occupied the building until they left in the early 1980s; some storefronts and office space was utilized for a while but soon the entire campus was completely abandoned.

City Methodist was burned in the Great Gary Arson of 1997, resulting in a large portion of the roof collapsed or missing. It is now owned by the city of Gary, and its future remains unclear.

In 2009, parts of a remake of the movie A Nightmare On Elm Street were filmed at the church.

Sometimes the best thing you can do to learn new techniques is sit down in front of unusual arts, and just explore their possibilities.

"Seeing" creatively, means being able to see differently. Not just what is expected, but what is possible. It can be as simple as turning a plate upside down and building "backwards", like here. And trying to find alternative connections for parts, like using a 1x1 round brick and a tyre to secure a Trolls hair piece and turn it into a flower.

In other words, explore the possibilities. You might just surprise yourself with what you find.

We spotted this little fawn about 10 yards inside the woodline, with momma just a few steps ahead, keeping a watchful eye on things. The little one seemed to feel safe knowing she was looking out, hopping around, wide-eyed and curious about the world. He noticed us but wasn’t scared, just curious, with his tail flicking as he followed closely behind momma. These type experiences are what we love, to watch them quietly move through the woods.

Jenny's Log 01:

We (crash) landed on a new planet today, Lenny managed to salvage a rover while Kenny is repairing one of the ships to get farther. So far, my scans haven't shown anything. Landing was tough, but who knows what this planet could hold.

If ever I had a photo that should make it to Explore, it should be this one.

(woohoo! it made explore! Highest is #248 so far)

After losing big in the 4th annual fishing tourney Alvis Angul has been looking for something to lift his spirits. with Gunnarr on another adventure Alvis has been keeping company with an odd band of elves. The Grugach are Alvis kind of people always looking for adventure, masters of the ocean and very good to have around when trouble breaks out.

This particular band are Kintiara a military crew of the Alu Shal (Water Lance) Captained by the elvish mage Ilyana Glynleth her first mate Galaeron Crabanise and Alvis have had their share of adventures together and have a mutual fondness for the open ocean.

Ilyana has heard rumors of the beast that lurks in the waters near the new lands and she has volunteered her services to vanquish the beast for the glory of Garhiem and to secure safe passage for future Garhim exploration of the new lands.

From inside Loop 410, only the brightest of these stars were visible to the naked eye. Most of them were drowned out by the city lights. When I moved to San Antonio over 50 years ago, you could see a lot more. I envy those of you who live where the night sky is dark and you can still see the stars.

This is the first photo in an exploration collab Meg and I are doing! We're shooting a photo for each continent, so of course what with the sudden snowfall, Antarctica came first!

I love pictures which tell you a story.

Meet Château des Anges. A post-mediaeval castle that was once surrounded by an immense park. It belonged to a very noble family of counts. It just had everything: a grapevine, vast orchards, fountains, stables, arable lands for crops and livestock, woods, a lake. Ownership changed quite often and the castle wasn't maintained as it should be. The last owner left the place in 1970. It is untouched ever since.

Plan A

My first attempt, spring 2009. The bridge connecting mainland to the castle's peninsula is fenced off. I slip through and check the front door. A flashback to 1970 twirls up in my mind: maybe they just left the place to get some smokes? And vanished, while leaving the front door open. Not. Of course it's sealed, what was I thinking.

Plan B

Inflatable boats, y'all. Pumping some air in some plastic. Load our gear and set sail. Peddling like there's no tomorrow. There's a thin line between exploring and transatlantic sailing.

I informed a fellow explorer of my boat plan, and we wanted to set off and explore this castle together. But he beat me to it. But he wanted to beat me. On an early morning he pulled out a rubber boat, started pumping, and took off. Unfortunately the boat plan didn't succeed. The island to embark on is completely overgrown by impenetrable bushes with sharp thorns, spines and prickles. After working one hour trying to make an entry through that jungle - bloody hands, ripped up shirts and a leaking boat inclusive - the plan was cancelled.

Plan C

Waiting. For a harsh winter. And ice. I waited 8 months to explore this baby. On one of the coldest winter mornings NeQo and me set off. It was -10°C. There wasn't a single soul for miles. Just us, this decayed castle, and Mister Winter.

The lake was frozen solid and we didn't have any difficulties wading through the thorned bush. We arrived at the castle. The backdoor of the terrace was open. Of course it was open. What was the owner thinking? Some schmuck would cross the water - or even better - cross the ice in the event of winter?

And there we were. Setting foot in an untouched place that's been decaying since the seventies. Forsaken. Since long. But captured in our minds. For ever more.

Explored with NeQo.
