Some weeks ago I had the chance to take some shots in the library of Stuttgart. It was the first time I visited the library and I had no big expectations. Of course the pictures you find online are really great but on the other hand side I doubted that I am able to get such shots because of several reasons:

a) I was not sure if my lense would be wide enough

b) I am aware what lightroom and photoshop can do

c) I never really used filters in such scenarios

d) and of course I know me as photographer (the most risky factor)

So no ideal conditions at all…I am not sure about the picture but I guess it’s not so bad ;-)...

But anyway I can just encourage everyone to visit the library because the architecture is just phenomenal. I was really amazed! So the trip to Stuttgart was more than worthwhile.

Here are some info about the library:

This one is taken with a flash, bouncing from a DIY softbox / reflector. It’s been a while since I’ve touched my flash but I intend on using them more often to improve my lighting skills.

Today is the start of a new year at the university, who knows what it might bring :)

As it goes, a friend and I headed out for yet another warbler outing. My expectations for this particular outing were quite high and, by some miracle, were exceeded. It's not everyday one gets the opportunity to photograph such a cooperative subject, let alone one that isn't all that common in my neck of the woods. The Canada Warbler breeds sparingly throughout the swampier, mixed forests of New Jersey. There are rumors of populations in a few far corners of the state, deep within dense wilderness where few birders trek. One could spend hours hiking the desolate trails, fending off bears and ticks just hoping to catch a glimpse of one of these stunning songbirds. Alternatively, you could hop in the car, drive around long enough in the right habitat to find a boat load of them just off the road. The choice was simple. After a few hours drive into the heart of Canada Warbler breeding territory, the first stop was made. It was quite lively. Among other things, Canada, Black-throated Green, Prairie and Blackburnian Warblers could all be heard singing. That's all great and wonderful, but none were so kind as to come into view. The Blackburnian Warbler would go on to make a passing visit, but this would last no more than a few seconds. With the likelihood of success dwindling, the executive decision was made to cut our losses and head to a new spot. We returned to a park in which we found our first Canada Warbler last year. That particular outing was by no means a failure, but it certainly left some to be desired. Last years bird were tough to get still and the lighting conditions were even tougher. That being said, we were hopeful for a change this time around. It wasn't more than ten minutes of driving in that we heard the familiar song. This patch was dense with rhododendron and swampy. Perfect habitat for Canada Warbler. Soon after, this male emerged from the shrubbery and began his routine of sing, forage, repeat. His preferred perches were low and obscured, but occasionally he would oblige us and chose an open perch. I use "open" generously. Even the open perches were low. I had to kneel and lean forward or lay on the ground to get a decently clean background. Had I sat upright, the background would've been a tangled mess of twigs and Mountain Laurel. Still, I can't complain. He found a few nice mossy logs to land on. The flower, which I believe to be Marsh Blue Violet, was just the cherry on top.

Held onto this one for a decade because I could never get the colors quite right...happy enough with it...

I've got three rolls of film sitting on my desk as we speak, taunting me. One of these days I'll get back to the lab, see what's on these little rascals, but I also enjoy moving farther and farther away from whatever expectations I had for them. Barely even remembering which people I shot.

The scans will come back and it'll be like Hanukkah, surprise gifts, all benefiting from me no longer remembering what I was trying to do.

Many great expectations are turning into disappointments these days. It only seems logical, that the announced great comet show next month seems to fizzle as well.

Comet ATLAS C/2019 Y4 was expected to become a naked eye object next month and some sources even said it might become visible during daylight.

Unfortunately comets are very unreliable guys and this one seems to follow the path of many predecessors that did not live up to their promise.

I showed the comet to my kids during the night of the 4./5. April and, as I already had my equipment set up, I decided to capture a short sequence, in spite of the bright moon in the sky.

Little did I know that the next night this cosmic visitor would start to show signs of disintegration and drop quite considerably in brightness. It still is not certain yet which course the comet will take, but chances are high that it will not become the great show that many of us were hoping for.

I attracted the attention of this flock of swans while I was admiring the late afternoon view over Charnwood Water while holding a white plastic bag filled with Indian goodies that I'd been given by a lady whose Ring doorbell system I'd just helped to configure the way she wanted. The spicy goodies went home with me; they definitely wouldn't have been good for the swans.

Lost in Her Thoughts Pic. 3

Visitors seem to be interested in this story, so I've lifted it from my comments, which have become hidden below:

I was walking on South Bank trying to get shots on the embankment without too many tourists in the frame but eventually gave up and took the staircase up to the footbridge to walk back across the river to Charing Cross. As I did that, I looked down and saw this 'couple' and the hoarding behind them and thought there might just be a story here.

They seemed oblivious to the world around them - deeply engaged in conversation. I was waiting for one of them to make some hand gestures but, all of a sudden, the girl got up and walked to the edge of the hoarding where she leaned back and made some very provocative gestures to her companion, still seated on the curb. Lord knows what was said between them, but I just thought the image said it all - such possibilities!

ESSENTIAL LARGE

Taken at one of my more recent sunrise outings, my expectations of some sunrise colour didn't eventuate - too much low level cloud!!

At least I got out and gave it a try!!

Work and personal commitments have prevented more recent outings - but I'm hoping that conditions might change during this week ahead - we'll see......

Hope you like this anyway - some rocks, white water, a headland and grey skies :-)

Have a terrific day and weekend - hope it brings you happiness and some new images!!

Magic moment, expectations are high......

A double set of tilting trains descends through the middle level of track at Wassen, Switzerland, with a late evening passenger service as fog rolls up the Reuss Valley and the famous Church of St. Gallus glows in the darkness. The notion of photographing this scene at twilight is what compelled me to visit the Gotthard Railway; both the fog and the overall experience vastly exceeded my expectations.
