As Christmas Day draws closer, it's very exciting to look at the wrapped gifts and to wonder what's inside each one. In fact, the excitement can sometimes become so intense that you can actually see it swirling around the gifts... 😄

Looking Close on Friday: "Wrapped Gifts" theme

Speaking of gifts, I wish the gift of a warm and festive holiday season to all of my Flickr friends, and a very Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. Thanks for your comments and support throughout the year; it is very much appreciated!

For any who might be interested in how this image was made, by the way, I've added a brief description in the first comment box.

Picture for the theme "Having fun". Not only Vas'ka, we are also happy to see the expression of delight on Vas'ka's face when he sees fried chicken

Vas'ka likes to sit right in front of the TV near the dining table. when we have lunch or dinner.

Thank you very much for visits, favs and comments, it's greatly appreciated!

The language of excitement is at best picturesque merely. You must be calm before you can utter oracles.

Henry David Thoreau.

Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. In a small part of the wood, a red-berried tree was reason for a day of excitement for several species of birds - here: the red-eyed vireo, a bird with a descriptive name that sings a part of it - at least this is how I remember the song: vire-ee vire-oh.

Thanks for all your comments and faves, much appreciated as

always.

The mailman probably doesn't know, but he has a fan here.

Not much bigger than the leaves of the tree she calls home, this female Shining Flycatcher was darting back and forth with nesting material, preparing to raise the next generation. I managed to capture a shot of her singing on the near-complete nest as we quietly passed by on the boat, gliding along the famous Daintree River in tropical Australia. Taken in FNQ, Australia

Soar Large On Black and have a great week!

It's a dangerous place, the Galaxies beyond the Milky Way, and especially if you're wearing rose-coloured glasses. Imagine my excitement when I discovered this Rose Galaxy that even the James Webb Space Telescope hasn't seen yet.

Mount Rainier is the highest mountain of the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest, and the highest mountain in the state of Washington. It is a large active stratovolcano located 54 miles (87 km) southeast of Seattle. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 ft (4,392 m). Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt. Rainier could potentially produce massive lahars that could threaten the entire Puyallup River valley.

Mount Rainier was first known by the Native Americans as Talol, or Tacoma or Tahoma, from the Lushootseed word [təqʷúʔbəʔ] ("mother of waters") spoken by the Puyallup. Another interpretation is that "Tacoma" means "larger than Mount Baker". This comes from the Skagit "Ta", larger, plus "Koma (Kulshan)", Mount Baker. Other names originally used include Tahoma, Tacobeh, and Pooskaus. The current name was given by George Vancouver, who named it in honor of his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. The map of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 refers to it as "Mt. Regniere".

Although "Rainier" had been considered the official name of the mountain, Theodore Winthrop, in his posthumously published 1862 travel book The Canoe and the Saddle, referred to the mountain as "Tacoma" and for a time, both names were used interchangeably, although "Mt. Tacoma" was preferred in the city of Tacoma.

In 1890, the United States Board on Geographic Names declared that the mountain would be known as "Rainier". Following this in 1897, the Pacific Forest Reserve became the Mount Rainier Forest Reserve, and the national park was established three years later. Despite this, there was still a movement to change the mountain's name to "Tacoma" and Congress was still considering a resolution to change the name as late as 1924.

In the excitement leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII, John Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado, named 53 mountains after the 53 members of the Denver Broncos. In response, the Washington State Senate passed a resolution on Friday, January 31, 2014, temporarily renaming the mountain Mount Seattle Seahawks. The resolution expired on midnight Monday, February 3, 2014.

When Union Pacific took delivery of its first GE "comfort cab" C40-8W locomotive (UP 9356) in December 1989, I was waiting with excitement to see one in person. That opportunity presented itself on March 24, 1990 when two month old UP 9367 sat idling in Provo Yard. Little did I (or anyone else) know at the time, GE would continue to utilize this same cab design for decades, with thousands upon thousands of new locomotives wearing the same angular face.

Last minutes before parade, Philadelphia Mummers Parade 2019.

Amid the fun and excitement, taking a break to myself!

At dawn, bare footed, viewing as far as eyes can reach,

the water's edge advances and recedes along the beach.

Before me I see a carpet of half-buried shells of sea-creatures,

tide washed and rippled in sodden sand along the beach.

I move, exploring, sodden sand oozing between my toes,

beyond me the wavelets breaking on the sand along the beach.

More fun from the Iowa State Fair - looking down one section of the Midway during blue hour.

Proof that 'color attracts' - people seem to gravitate to the multitude of colored booths and lighted rides.

It’s a special time of year, when the air is filled with excitement and chatter. When nature’s miracles are in open view. It’s a time when there is little need to search for symbols of hope and prosperity, as they seem to abound. During this special time, I frequently enjoy simply sitting back and watching the exceptional things that hide in plain view. If you don’t take the time, you’ll miss them, and that, I’m afraid, would be a terrible mistake. When papa bluebird showed up with two young fledglings, I was sitting on my back porch feeding peanuts to the squirrels and enjoying a cup of coffee. It was the perfect end to a great day.

Similar to yesterday’s Downy Woodpecker, this juvenile Swainson‘s thrush couldn’t resist the attraction of the red elderberry‘s fruit. I debated the species a bit, as this bird was missing the distinctive supraoral line of the Swainson‘s thrush but the alternative gray-cheeked thrush (Catharus minimus) does not breed this far south, and overall looks much paler.

I have not been out much taking pictures this year. However, I am starting to get into the mood again as winter is approaching. Let's hope that we get some decent amount of snow this year and not just wet and windy weather. :-)
