The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Polish: Grób Nieznanego Żołnierza) is a monument in Warsaw, Poland, dedicated to the unknown soldiers who have given their lives for Poland. It is one of many such national tombs of unknowns that were erected after World War I, and the most important such monument in Poland.
The monument, located at Piłsudski Square, is the only surviving part of the Saxon Palace that occupied the spot until World War II. Since November 2, 1925 the tomb houses the unidentified body of a young soldier who fell during the Defence of Lwów. Since then, earth from numerous battlefields where Polish soldiers have fought has been added to the urns housed in the surviving pillars of the Saxon Palace.
The Tomb is constantly lit by an eternal flame and assisted by a guard post provided by the three companies of the 1st Guards Battalion, Representative Regiment of the Polish Armed Forces. It is there that most official military commemorations take place in Poland and where foreign representatives lay wreaths when visiting Poland.
The Tomb was designed by the famous Polish sculptor, Stanisław Kazimierz Ostrowski.
The changing of the guard takes place every full hour, 365 days a year.

John F. Kennedy "Eternal Flame"
~ this shot can also belong to my series ~ Can you see me ... !?
The memorial was dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt on July 3rd, 1938, the 75th anniversary of the battle. One Union and one Confederate veteran unveiled the 47 1/2 foot tall shaft. Roosevelt compared the task of the men of the 1860’s with the men of his day: “All of them we honor, not asking under which Flag they fought then – thankful that they stand together under one Flag now.” In less than five years the grandsons of these veterans would be standing together in unimaginably terrible battles against enemies around the world.
Over 250,000 people attended the dedication, with an estimated 100,000 more unable to make it due to overcrowded highways. Over 1,800 Civil War veterans attended what was to be the last reunion, all of them at least in their nineties. They lived in a luxurious tent camp complete with electricity and boardwalks set up in the fields north of Gettysburg College, attended by a host of Boy Scouts. The memorial’s $60,000 cost was provided by donations from state both north and south. Its base is made of Maine granite, while the shaft is of a lighter colored Alabama limestone. The gas-lit eternal flame burned until 1979 when it was replaced by electricity, but it was restored in 1988. The monument was the inspiration for the eternal flame on President Kennedy’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. Source: gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/other-monuments/eternal-lig...
This was taken during the record-breaking snow storm on February 16, 2016. I decided to walk home from work around 2 (after we were let out from work early) because I knew the buses would take forever.
On my way home, I stopped at Parliament Hill because, why not? While everyone was scrambling to get home, I was out taking tourist shots of Canada's Parliament Building!

Before anyone asks, no, this is not Photoshop... Lol
I just cropped and played with the colors a bit. Nothing else.
This is just a single candle between a glass and a mirror.
I like to call it "Eternal Flame" candlestick. I love the effect and The Bangles' song. =D
Deep down inside, I'm asking myself this question for many times, "Am I the one who hurts you the most?"...
Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?
I believe it's meant to be, darling
I watch when you are sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?
Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling...

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, WASHINGTON DC, USA
The Eternal Flame of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
I attended Arlington National Cemetery, steeped with such history and occasion. A truly powerful place to be, and yet emotional.
The shrine was temporarily adjacent to the President's resting place where preparations and renovations were taking place in the lead up to the 50th Anniversary & Commemorations that were to be held some four weeks later.
The Cemetery was peaceful, sad, yet beautiful as well.. You could sense however, the sombreness of the tragedy in America's past.
Rest In Peace, Mr President, and all that lie in peace with you.
May the flame forever burn in your memory!

Day 280: I visited the Arlington National Cemetery this morning. There were definitely more people there than i would have guessed for a sunday morning.
I took this shot without looking through the viewfinder. It would have been nice to lay down but there were too many tourist to do so. Im just lucky no one was standing on the other side.
I also posted the Full Color verison
Be sure to check out the rest of the set
На братских могилах не ставят крестов,
И вдовы на них не рыдают,
К ним кто-то приносит букеты цветов,
И Вечный огонь зажигают.
(On the mass graves do not put crosses
And widows they do not weep,
These someone brings bouquets of flowers
And the Eternal flame lit.)

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Indians #jaihind
This Amar Jawan Jyoti is located near Nathula pass (14000 ft) in Indian state of sikkim. This is replica of the the original structure erected at New Delhi. It was constructed after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 to commemorate the martyred and unknown soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who died during the war. The pedestal is bound by four urns, one of which holds the eternal flame.
Been digging into some of my older photo files today and found a picture from one of my abstract picture projects of myself lighting a candle with a match.
I can't quite recall what the background was, but think it was a brown table top and brown piece of card!

Canada's National Buildings
Middle of the day, middle of the week, much less foot traffic running around Parliament Hill here in the Nation's Capital.
I managed to sneak this one in while passing and then continued toward a destination called anywhere.

About
I had some time to kill one afternoon, and I hadn't been to the AWM in many, many years. Now I know I have copied others by taking a shot of the relection, but I thought upside down with the coins as stars in the sky looked pretty good.

Remembrance Day 2018, 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice.
The Shrine of Remembrance (commonly known among locals as The Shrine) is a war memorial in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in Kings Domain on St Kilda Road. It was built to honour the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I, but is now a memorial to all Australians who have served in war. It is a site of annual observances of ANZAC Day (25 April) and Remembrance Day (11 November) and is one of the largest war memorials in Australia.

The Overseas War (Combatentes Ultramar) was a dark period in Portugal’s modern history that ultimately resulted in the overthrow of the Salazar dictatorship but the toll on Lisbon was extremely high as many of the soldiers families originated from the capital. The Overseas War took the lives of over 9,000 soldiers and lasted between 1961 and 1974 as Portugal desperately tried to retain its African colonies.
The name of each soldier who perished is engraved onto the 180 bronze plates that surround the central memorial. The Monumento Combatentes Ultramar was unveiled in February 2000 and was designed by artists Carlos Guerrero and Batista Barros.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier contains the remains of one soldier who died in December 1941 at Km41 of Leningradskoe sh – the nearest the Nazis came to Moscow. The inscription reads: ‘Your name is unknown, your deeds immortal.’ Every hour on the hour, the guards perform a perfectly synchronised ceremony to change the guards on duty. There’s an eternal flame, and other inscriptions listing the Soviet 'hero cities' of WWII – those that withstood the heaviest fighting – and honouring ‘those who fell for the motherland’ between 1941 and 1945. South of the tomb, a row of red urns contains earth from the hero cities - Moscow, Russia
This close-up photo shows a section of the tall panels engraved with the names of Uzbek soldiers who died during World War II. It's part of Memory and Honor Square, one of the most solemn memorials in Tashkent, dedicated to more than 400,000 fallen soldiers.
The names, written in gold letters, are arranged yearly across long corridors of engraved metal. Each one marks a life cut short—many in their early twenties. Standing in front of these walls, the sheer number becomes overwhelming. You don't just read names—you sense the weight of loss across an entire generation.
The square itself was inaugurated in 1999 and centers around the statue of the Mourning Mother, symbolizing the grief of all mothers who waited in vain for their sons to return. An eternal flame burns before her, reminding visitors that their memory will never fade.
This place doesn't shout. It speaks quietly and stays with you.

It's close, but these Liverpool FC cufflinks are smaller than a £2 (GBP) coin.
These were a present to me from my wife on my first birthday after getting married. Still my favourite cufflinks, although I rotate them with my Batman and Transformers ones when I can.
Taken with a 50mm f/1.8 lens and a combination of close up lenses, approx +14.

This panorama is from the roof of the Shrine of Remembrance looking down towards Southbank. The tallest building in the Centre is the Eureka Tower. To its left is Australia 108, so called because, on completion it will have 108 floors. It is also destined to become the tallest building in the southern hemisphere
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA (adjacent to Washington DC) - This near 180 degree view of the JFK Grave-site and Arlington House high atop the hill (and with the US Flag at half mast) is without question my most treasured memory from our recent visit to the nation's capital. The history and importance of this cemetery may be somewhat difficult to grasp without spending considerable time reading about its location and those buried within, but it is well worth the time it takes to do so. This was the first and most valuable stop on our visit to Washington, DC this past month, and I certainly would not plan to visit the area again without making a return trip to the Arlington National Cemetery ...
