Eternal Flame - The Bangles

youtu.be/PSoOFn3wQV4

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling

Do you feel my heart beating?

Do you understand? Do you feel the same?

Am I only dreaming?

Is this burning an eternal flame?

I believe it's meant to be, darling

I watch you when you are sleeping

You belong with me

Do you feel the same? Am I only dreaming?

Or is this burning (burning) an eternal flame?

Say my name

Sun shines through the rain

A whole life so lonely

And then come and ease the pain

I don't want to lose this feeling, oh

Calathea crocata also known as eternal flame is native to Brazil. It is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial. The ovate green leaves are feathered grey-green above and reddish beneath. The orange-red flowers are borne in a short, erect spike of orange bracts. After sunset, the leaves fold up. (www.jungledragon)

Today is Remembrance Day.

We pause for a minute at 1100 hours on 11/11 each year to remember. The time and date were chosen to commemorate the end of World War l and was originally known as Armistice Day and renamed Remembrance Day after World War ll.

The history of Philadelphia's Washington Square is grim and fascinating. Signs along the path indicate that this plaza was part of William Penn’s 1682 design for parks in Philadelphia. It became in the following decades a public graveyard for thousands of dead, including strangers to the area, those in poverty, those unable to be buried on church grounds, free and enslaved Africans, Native American smallpox victims, and townspeople along with Colonial and British soldiers who died of wounds or rampant illness in the city durning the Revolutionary War and British occupation. Finally over 1300 victims of a Yellow Fever epidemic in 1793 were interred here before the ground was closed to burials the following year.

The patriotic memorial to George Washington and the unknown soldier, installed in the 1950s, is also quite sobering and thought provoking. Inscriptions read:

"Freedom is a light for which many men have died in darkness"

"The independence and liberty you possess are the work of joint councils and joint efforts - of common dangers, suffering and success”

"In unmarked graves within this square lie thousands of unknown soldiers of Washington's Army who died of wounds and sickness during the Revolutionary War."

"Beneath this stone rests a soldier of Washington's army who died to give you liberty."

There are many "eternal flames" around the world, but the one in Chestnut Ridge Park here in NY is special for a few reasons. Typically, eternal flames are fueled by extremely hot, ancient rocks buried beneath the earth's surface. In Chestnut Ridge, these rocks aren't hot enough to create our beloved flame. Instead, there is a natural seep of ethane and propane gases--the highest concentration of these gases in any seep in the world, it seems. More interesting yet is the juxtaposition of Chestnut Ridge's eternal flame against a beautiful cascade of water. It is said that Native Americans were the first to light this waterfall aflame thousands of years ago!

Another Everlasting Flower shut up till the sun shines again today. Lots of rain about - I can see a hint of sun now though - Yay :))x

We pause to remember, on this day, the 25th of April all those who gave the Supreme Sacrifice in war through the years and to thank those who returned from the many and various theatres of war through the years.

As the Eternal Flame burns forever, so we must never forget.

In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

Eternal Flame by The Bangles

Candle In The Dark

We cross the meadow; cannot wait

impatient for the golden hour

that time of day when sunlight dazzles

dappled shade of trees and flowers

suffuses light as soft as silk

paints the sky with buttermilk.

When darkness comes I'm unafraid

you're there with me my hand in yours

We light a fire within our hearts

you are my candle in the dark

The burning flames that dance and flickr

rekindle love that once shone bright

the shimmering heat is visible

like mottled glass before the light

the last vestige of watery sun

falls silently into the night

Our initials in the fire

retrace the pattern of desire

and let the sweetness of the hour

burn in our memories forever

The top of Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance boasts spectacular 360 degree views around the city. This one looks northwards to the city's CBD and overlooks the Eternal Flame.
