I was extremely lucky last night to meet the renowned conservationist and expert on butterflies and moths, Neil Hulme, just as he was releasing emperor moths locally.

He was so approachable and generous with his time and information and let me take lots of photos of these gorgeous creatures and spend time watching their behaviour.

The tips on the male aren't as sharp as I'd like in this one (over-excitement as usual!), but what a treat to capture the male and female together in one shot.

My first encounter this summer with the little emperor, blue dragonfly. This male seemed to be eating something and didn´t mind me approaching. Have a sunny weekend folks! ;-)

Lincolnshire, UK. - newly emerged and the first ever garden pond record of a emperor.

The goose never got all that close - this is a heavily cropped 1000mm shot. But hey, life bird! And the day was beautiful. Green lush hills from all of the glorious rain we have been having. Huge waves. Warm sun. On the way home we started talking about how much it felt like being in Hawaii and before you know it, we found a way to get back to Kauai next month.

Hawaii sounds like a balm for the troubled soul right now. The world is feeling pretty scary.

This is one of Europe's largest dragonflies. The male is easy to identify with its apple green thorax and bright blue abdomen and blue eyes.

Like lots of other people our lockdown project was to make a wildlife pond. (It may take some time to get it finished! ) Delighted this morning to see this Emperor ovipositing.

Life-sized marble head of Tiberius Caesar Augustus, Roman Emperor in AD 14-37 (Roman-Germanic Museum, Cologne). The man, whose individuality is clearly expressed here, plays a certain role in the New Testament (remember the coin with the emperor's face on one side and the name of God on the other?) but he was also instrumental in founding the Colonia Agrippina, Cologne, Germany. Like many people I've been trying new things in the last couple of weeks including exploring the photographic opportunities in my back garden by reinstating my garden hide, attempting to attract different species and nocmigging (recording birds at night). All have been really successful, although the last one doesn't provide any photos unfortunately! Emperor moths are one species I have always wanted to photograph and so I bought a pheromone lure in the hope they would visit. The day before this one came into the garden I had been walking around some local fields and one flew right in front of me so I knew they were in the area. When this one did come into the garden I initially thought it was a butterfly but then the realisation dawned and I was able to finally get some photos of this stunning moth

Male emperor dragonflies are pale blue, with an apple-green thorax and a black stripe running the length of the body. Females are similar, but a duller greeny-blue. Both have greeny-blue eyes. This species is recognised by the combination of its large size and mostly blue colour.
