ESP10 - 10 years advancing ecosystem services science, policy and practice for a sustainable future.
25 October 2019, Hannover Congress Centre
The ecosystems formed in the sand banks and lagoons adjacent to the Black Sea are in danger because the state allocated the lands to rich businessmen with little care for the environment.
Bribery and political corruption turns the state authorities responsible for these areas into mere spectators.
This is a picture of the parking lot at my apartment complex. The abiotic components of this terrestrial environment include nonliving things, like the concrete, light, sun, etc. One difference between an aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem is that aquatic ecosystems are much more stable than terrestrial ecosystems with less fluctuations in temperature and other variables.

Ecosystem services valued at over US $72 trillion a year.
Yet two thirds are considered degraded from damage, mismanagement and failure to invest and re-invest in productivity, health and sustainability.
Roll the statistics around in your mind, say them out loud and roll them off your tongue. Look out the window and think about them: natural wetlands provide services of nearly US $7 trillion, forest wetlands treat more wastewater per unit of energy and have up to 22 fold higher cost-benefit ratios than traditional sand filtration in treatment plants. Crops including the cup of tea, or coffee that you had this morning rely on pollination and pest control services of birds and insects. Projected loss of ecosystem service could lead up to 25% loss in food production and by 2050 increase the risk of hunger. These are a few of the statistics mentioned in UNEP's report; Dead planet, living planet: Biodiversity and ecosystem restoration for sustainable development.

The ‘Ecosystem-based Adaptation South’ project seeks to help the Seychelles, Nepal and Mauritania to adapt to climate change, in part by restoring natural habitats across all types of ecosystems. In the Seychelles, on-the-ground ecological restoration will rehabilitate 29 hectares of mangrove and wetland forests, thus providing natural flood barriers.
