Too confusing of an image? No doubt. Still, I rather liked the jumble of the North End landscape reflected in the window of Spotless Cleaners where two men add yet another sign to the display. (BTW, the rest of the "Expert" sign reads "Shoe Repair" in case you're looking for a place that does it all.)

Lots of sawdust came out of the ceiling of Star Cleaners and covered the ground when it was torn down. On it, I noticed a small, green, plastic box. What could it be? (223a)

Until they moved to bigger premises in Prescot earlier this year, this was the head office of Johnsons the cleaners - a business that goes back to 1817 when Johnson Brothers started in business in Liverpool as a silk dyers. Just over a hundred years later in 1920, they joined forces with with two drycleaning companies, Jas Smith & Son and Flinn & Son Ltd of Brighton to create Johnsons the Cleaners. As for this building (their much-reduced factory in Linacre Road, Bootle) well, I haven't the foggiest as to when it was built but I'd say the 1930s. The tower, which bore the legend 'Dyers' (which was part of the huge site) and the factory frontage were pulled down when the company downsized, leaving a drive-in shop which has also recently closed down.

What remains of the factory (of which you can see a bit more here) is to be converted into 82 flats with retail premises on the ground floor. If Johnsons could open a shop up here again, it would be a nice touch. Personally, I think it might have been better NOT to have pulled the factory frontage down because that would mean more flats but I don't think the management at Johnsons were exactly blessed with logic - silly billies! (to quote one-time Chancellor of the Exchequer Dennis Healey).

Does anyone see any codicil on this coupon that says, "no, your coat is a pile coat and therefore will cost $29.97 to clean"?

I certainly don't. But that's what these rip-off artists told me after I'd left my coat there for a week for dry cleaning.

I certainly won't be using them. What's the penalty for false advertising?

This may have been a private house at one time, who knows? Now it appears there's a (strangely configured) apartment over the business.

Would YOU want to live over a dry cleaner?

Friday morning I went to pick up my suit from the drycleaner and took my camera with me. I wanted to document the old equipment in this 100 year old shop in an old house in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary - the shop was started by the grandfather of the current owner, who is also 70 years old and may not continue this business for long.

An old electric spin dryer in the workshop - since they use benzyne in the workshop, the electric engine has to be in the other room, and the torque passed onto the machine with the help of axles and belts. If the engine is not working, you can use this hand driven wheel...

I've been having a lot of girl trouble lately. It's something I know I shouldn't be too down about but it always hurts...

One of the most personal stories I've ever heard was from a Michael Gondry short film. It was a film he made when he was 12. He asked this girl to dance with him at a school dance (and he he was really in love with this girl) and she said no and it was because he was too short.

She didn't like him for something he couldn't even control.

Whenever I get rejected I always think it's because of something I can't control and I just feel unwanted and useless. But everyone does probably.
