Here we have what once was Motor City Cleaners, on West Warren in Detroit.
This is the sign that triggered this latest round of signing. I was "driving" down Warren Ave with Google Maps on my iPad, and I came across this really crusty sign. To give you an idea of what the area is like, not only is this building pretty much gutted and utterly destroyed, the building next to it was, until recently the headquarters for a local motorcycle gang. They left because the neighborhood became too dodgy. I learned this little tidbit from a Detroit Police officer, who stopped while I was taking this shot to ask me if I was either lost, or crazy. He seemed content with the latter excuse. I told him half in jest, "someday getting these shots are going to be the death of me" He looked at me in all seriousness and said "If you're going to drive around where you shouldn't in a car like this, (I had the crossfire) it might be a good idea to keep a little something in your glove compartment, just in case. But you didn't hear that from me." "Thanks for the tip" "Nothing fancy, just enough to get yourself out of trouble".

This local dry cleaner reminds me of the expression "living in a goldfish bowl" with patrons sitting around waiting for their laundry while passers by watch. I think the pedestrian adds additional interest to the shot.
This is Boscawen nearly 3 weeks ago now with some touching up on a cloudy day. I was out and about today 10/21 and I still found a few nice trees especially in parts of Concord but in my neck of the woods we are past peak and they are predicting our first light snowfall tonight.
I am fascinated with old signs. This one has been maintained, so the paint isn't chipping or peeling, but it is a vintage design. Jacksonville, FL (photo #3220196)
Day and Night Cleaners, Tulsa OK. Shot out the window as a reminder to return and retake a photograph, this one fell between the cracks. I liked the name and building and its location on a tight curve on Route 66 enough to post this far less than perfect substitute for the forgotten alternative.

A régi vegytisztÃtó-műhely szerszámai, tartályai, kannái vannak itt felhalmozva - rézüstök, mosóasztalok, vödrök, stb. / All the equipments of the old drycleaner workshop are here in these rooms: gas cans, buckets, washing tables, glass containers, etc.
Friday morning I went to pick up my suit from the drycleaner and took my camera with me. I wanted to document the old equipment in this 100 year old shop in an old house in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary - the shop was started by the grandfather of the current owner, who is also 70 years old and may not continue this business for long.

Egy régi elektromos centrifuga kapcsolója - a benzint is használó műhelyben fontos, hogy a villamos motor egy másik helyiségben legyen a szikra-veszély miatt - a hajtást egy tengely és szÃjak hozzák át a géphez. Ha nincs áram, ezzel a kerékkel kézzel is meg lehet hajtani a gépet.

An old electric spin dryer in the workshop - since they use benzyne in the workshop, the electric engine has to be in the other room, and the torque passed onto the machine with the help of axles and belts. If the engine is not working, you can use this hand driven wheel...
November 16 - I had to stop in on the way back from class today.
The daily focus of my eJournal and images blog is on text, Here, I want to create something which will emphasize photos. I'll shoot and add an image each day. Doing so will remind me to constantly carry my camera and it'll be a more direct record of current, personal experiences.

Operating a dry cleaners is a hot and monotonous job. And it's a business that is highly subject to changes in the economy.

This is my happy drycleaner. She is amazing in that she works seven days a week and has two jobs. She always has a smile on her face and something pleasant to talk about.
