Marking the passing of Terence Conran who founded the Design Museum in London in 1989.

The museum's first site was in Shad Thames, just beyond Tower Bridge and this is where I discovered this interesting contraption in 2015. It was created by Dominic Wilcox and is called the Stained-glass Driverless Sleeper Car of the Future.

In 2016, the museum moved to larger premises in Kensington High Street.

Copenhagen Metro is a brand new fully automated system running underground (deep tunnel), grade-separated and on fully isolated ground level tracks. The automation allows for relatively short car and station lengths.

I am not the biggest fan of the Metro, as there would have been plenty of space on Copenhagen streets to reinstall a tram network, and the driverless automation also means that no (cheaper) street level extensions are possible in less dense areas.

Nevertheless, the futuristic (Giugiaro) design of the AnsaldoBreda cars makes travel a pleasant expeirence and the metro nicely complements the extensive S-Tog (S-Bahn, suburban rail) lines.

Wikipedia: Aerotrain is a driverless people mover system located within the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.

It began operations in 1998 transporting carrying passengers between the Main Terminal Building and Satellite Building A. It is due to be extended to Low Cost Carrier Terminal in 2007 and other new terminals in the future. It is similar to Hong Kong International Airport's HKIA Automated People Mover. ...

The train, is fully driverless and automated. One example, when the train reaches platform, the exit doors will open first for passengers to disembark and only in a short while, the entrance door at the other side will be open (so called Spanish solution).

Part of the train track goes underground as it passes through the taxiway above. The ride between the Main Terminal Building and Satellite Terminal A takes an estimated 5 minutes.

[edit] Facts and figures

* Stations: 2 (Main Terminal Building ? Satellite Terminal A)

* Rolling stocks: Two CX-100 trains, 3 cars per train (originally 2 cars per train).

* Manufacturer: ADtranz

* Capacity: 249 per car

* Speed: 56 km/h

* Power supply: 3-phase 600 V at 50Hz

* Propulsion system: 100hp DC Electric Motor.

The line is 20 km long with 16 stations, and operated by SBS Transit. Traveling from one end of this line to the other end takes around half an hour. This line is coloured purple in the rail map.

The air taxi Cora has an 11 meter wingspan with 12 independent lift fans for vertical takeoff and landing. A single battery charge is enough for 100 kilometers of flight. It also has one large rear propeller, which allows the Cora to fly at a speed of about 180 km per hour at an altitude of 900 meters.

This model is suitable for using in the 3D renderings of architectural visualizations, traffic simulation, games etc. where it doesn't need to use heavy high-polygonal models.

The See-Meile Route today in Berlin-Tegel is on a trial run until the end of the year, in order to test driverless public transport in general service, as well as to see how other drivers and the public react to the vehicles.

Negative View: The driver of the mercedes reacted badly when confronted with the bus. He overtook the bus too fast and too close to vehicle, setting off its emergency stop. The vehicle then had to be re-configured. The driver behind, a woman, reacted correctly and left enough space between her car and the bus.

During the 1960s the Transport and Road Research Laboratory in Crowthorne, Berkshire, conducted some experiments with "Driverless Cars". The agency had anticipated problems of limited roadways and conjection and sought to solve that by modifying the nature of a personal car with features similar tot he autopilot in an airplane. It was thought that affordable systems could be incorporated in existing cars and trucks, which could interact with magnetic cabling embedded in motorways so that a much higher density of cars could use the limited roadway syatem.

The Citoren DS19 was one of several cars used for this experimentation. Others included a Standard vanguard and an Austin Mini. The DS was chosen because of the high pressure hydraulic suspension, braking and steering system. The hydraulic steering int he DS could be actuated in small inrements and with precision. The braking system in the DS also requires very little actuation for considerable effort. The suspension system in a DS ensures a very secure road holding characteristic. In experiments the driverless DS could go around the test track at 80 mph without deviation of speed or direction in any weather conditions, and in a far more effective way than by human control.

Research continued in the '70s with cruise control devices activated by signals in the cabling beneath the tracks. Cost benefit analyses were made and it was found that the investement in automation on the British road system could be repaid by the year 2000 and would insure 50% increase in road use whilst reducing accidents by 40%. Funding for these experiments was withdrawn by the mid 1970s. Ironically current technological developments like GPS, mobile phone systems in cars, sensors, CCTV cameras and highway control centres echo a lot of the thinking behind the TRRL Citroen DS.

A departing Metro train (just left Kellyville) heading for Rouse Hill.

Trieste – Villa Opicina tram depot at Villa Opicina. Wednesday 02 October 2013.

This steeply graded metre gauge tramway was opened in 1902 to give tourists access to the spectacular views of the port from the mountains. The line is 5.2 km in length and climbs from just 3 metres above sea level in Trieste to a height of 329 metres in Opicina.

When built it incorporated an 869 metre rack railway section between Piazza Scorcola and Vetta Scorcola. Conventional four wheel tramcars operated the full length of the line, being assisted up and down the rack section by three small rack locomotives. In 1928 the rack railway section was replaced by a funicular section and the rack locomotives by cable tractors.

At the present time the tramway is temporarily closed due to problems with the third generation of cable tractors which were introduced in 2005. These driverless tractors are operated remotely by the drivers of the tramcars and are required for the funicular section.

The Post Office Railway was a 610 mm narrow gauge, driverless underground railway that was built by the Post Office with assistance from the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, to transport mail between sorting offices.

The line ran from Paddington Head District Sorting Office in the west to the Eastern Head District Sorting Office at Whitechapel in the east (shown foreground in the graphic), a distance of 6.5 miles. It had eight stations, the largest of which was underneath Mount Pleasant, but by 2003 only three stations remained in use because the sorting offices above the other stations had been relocated.

It opened in 1927 and operated for 76 years until it closed in 2003.

The South Island Line opened in 2016 as an extension of the Hong Kong MTR metro system, and is operated by 3-car driverless trains. It serves the Southern District of Hong Kong Island, which at present is not serviced by any rail transport, and connects to the rest of the network at Admiralty station.
