An icy scene from Sambro, Nova Scotia. The wind was very bitter that day and just strong enough to make the snow lightly drift and cause the wave tops to create a matching drifting spray.

The Drift is a small canal in Utrecht. The stately houses to the left have their own bridge over the canal. Most of the buidlings are in use by the Universiteit Utrecht.
In search of snow showers yesterday I headed down the 'C' classified road between Dallas and Knockando. It quickly turned into a blue-sky day but around the point of giving up and turning back I found a section of road exposed to a biting cross wind. Here, the snow was drifting with some force creating some fantastic wind-sculpted snow patterns. Standing in the middle of the single-track road with 3-5 foot drifts either side wasn't perhaps the most sensible and at one point my camera resembled a snowball but I was really pleased with some of the images I was able to capture.
Definitely best seen large.
Well from high winds and rain last week it's now turned to snow. The sun came out but the wind was blowing strong enough for the snow to drift. This is a 3 exp. HDR which has captured the sandblasting effect of the snow. The track is by Bowstones above Lyme Park near Disley, Cheshire (UK).
I spent some time this past summer trying to learn how better to secure images of pollinators of all kinds. That project was motivated by my sunrise walks down an abandoned road southeast of Ottawa, where overgrown wildflowers grew in thick and deep bunches on the sides of the road, and where butterflies and moths and bees and wasps spent the first light re-energizing for the new day.
The subjects of the photographs had a lot more freedom to drift away from the road to the wild meadows than I had - old fences and thick vegetation kept me pretty hemmed in. That meant having to get creative in most cases, which was part of learning how to manage the situation. I really liked this image, shot through a wall of vegetation to find the Skipper - not an especially exotic one for people who know these creatures - who was drinking from the wildflower.
This activity and the many early mornings it entailed was a response to the impact of the pandemic on birding and bird photography. Most of my usual places had not adjusted particularly well to the changed circumstances, and so the solitary mornings were just what the public health officials ordered.
I really hope everyone is safe and has a great holiday break. I now know people (healthcare workers) who are scheduled to be vaccinated shortly in Ottawa so things are slowly moving forward - please take care.
And many sincere thanks to the people who look at, like and/or comment on my images. I really appreciate the connection. I spend a lot of my free time looking at and learning from others, but this is an amazing community, and it offers a lot to me in different ways - especially with the superb images people are posting. So: many thanks, and stay safe.
Homeward bound on the highway and this site caught my eye. Drifting snow was blowing north across the fields west of Calgary. The sun had already set and the horizon was left with a tangerine color. I had my equipment but the wrong footwear. Oh well, it all drys out.
The wind blew the snow on the ridge around and along the sides of the roads the snow was sculpted.
This was taken facing the cornfield looking south. The trees in the distance are about 1/3 of a mile away.

One of the highlights of the Gibbs Building is the stunning sculpture 'Bleigiessen'. Thomas Heatherwick Studio was commissioned to create this major work for a spectacular 30-metre-high vertical void. It consists of 150,000 specially processed glass spheres, suspended on almost one million metres of fine stainless steel wire, the sculpture glows with a constantly shifting rainbow of colour. This effect was created through a unique process of sandwiching reflective 'dichroic' film within the glass. Bleigiessen - 'lead-guessing' - is a New Year's Eve activity in central Europe. Lead is poured into water, producing extraordinary shapes from which your fortune can be predicted for the coming year.
So im back from my glacialogi course at Tarfala research station in the Kebnekaise massif. Such an awesome place. New knowledge and about 900 pictures went back with me :)

I close my eyes, then I drift away, into the magic night I softly say. A silent prayer, like dreamers do, then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you.
