Was visiting my Mom & she had these gorgeous white orchids with a rich burgundy center
that I just had to take a few photos of! Hope you all like them as much as I do =)
Can't see the skin cells, but there is some context. I spotted this leaf on the lawn of a house, where we were rebuilding the front porch.
I couldn't decide which I liked better, so I went with both.
Lincoln Cathedral has a strong claim to being England's finest medieval building, being one of the most ambitious and beautifully designed and adorned cathedrals in Europe, a real masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Sited dramatically on a hilltop overlooking the city below, it's three tapering towers are a landmark visible from miles away over the otherwise flat Lincolnshire countryside. Originally however the effect was even more magnificent, as the towers were formerly crowned by lead-covered wooden spires, the tallest of which gave the cathedral the title of the World's tallest building for some two and a half centuries until the spire was blown down by a gale in 1549. The smaller spires on the west towers survived until they too were dismantled in c1810.
The earliest part is the core of the west front and the lower part of the west towers, part of the original Romanesque cathedral begun in 1088 by Bishop Remigius and ornamented with a fine carved frieze, of which significant sections remain (some recently replaced by copies, others still currently boxed in for protection from the elements). The remainder of this building suffered damage in an earthquake in 1185 and was replaced by the present cathedral in the following century.
The first phase of reconstruction between 1192 & 1210 was directed by Bishop Hugh of Avalon, later known as St Hugh of Lincoln, whose shrine was later venerated in the completed building. The bulk of the building is 13th century Early English Gothic, with lancet windows, coloured marbles and stunning rose windows in the main transepts (like several of England's larger cathedral's Lincoln was given a secondary pair of transepts flanking the choir).
The final part was the extension east of St Hugh's choir which is one of the richest, most celebrated expressions of English Gothic dating from the early 14th century, known as the Angel choir after the carvings that decorate it's higher parts (other sculptural details here include the famous Lincoln Imp). The cathedral's main tower was also raised at this time, followed by the heightening of the western towers, adding great height to the main facades extraordinary width. The former spires must have finished the effect in spectacular fashion.
The cathedral contains some superb stained glass, including a substantial amount of it's original 13th century glazing in the choir aisle east windows and the main transepts, particularly the two rose windows (the Dean's Eye to the north, with much of it's original Lastr Judgement narrative, and the later Bishop's Eye to the south, mostly composed of fragments in set in gorgeous tracery). Most however is Victorian, bbut very effective nonetheless, with a particularly rich sequence in the nave aisles. There are also some more contemporary pieces in certain chapels.
The cathedral also boasts some of the finest medieval woodwork in the country in it's superb choir stalls, extensively carved with canopies with misericords (though sadly the latter are rarely on show). There are surprisingly few major monuments for so grand a cathedral, compared to so many others; the best known being the heart tomb of Queen Eleanor (a Victorian reconstruction after the original was destroyed by Cromwell's mob).
Though the cathedral never served as a monastic foundation, it was nonetheless provided with cloisters and an impressive chapter house at the north east corner. The cloisters are relatively small and lost their northern side in the 17th century, afterwards replaced by a lighter arcade with a new cathedral library above it designed by Sir Christopher Wren.in 1674. One of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta was held here for centuries, though more recently it was put on display at the nearby Lincoln Castle.

Flora is a strictly indoor cat with zero survival skills and a resting sad face. Cat sat her for my neighbours back in the days.
This is the moment a lorry driver was dramtically rescued by fire fighters. After the driver was left trapped in the cab of the tractor unit he was driving which was precariously dangling 20 foot over the quayside on Hartlepool Docks above the chilly North Sea. The driver was stuck in his cab for an hour before fire fighters helped him out of his cab with the use of an aerial platform. 1st October 2013.
An interesting sky this morning. Of course some post processing to bring out more of the relative "goodness".
Note the little spec in the cloud, just above the right hand palm tree. No, it's not dust or a dirt spot that I forgot to remove. Click on the image, and you may be able to tell that it's a 'plane, and a very well-defined one too. Well, maybe less so on this reduced-size upload, but clearly identifiable, with very clean lines, on my screen at the full image resolution - which is cropped a bit, by the way.
The impending sunset dramatically lights up the peaks in Great Basin National Park as the clouds of a nearby thunderstorm continue to glower over the landscape.

Sia and Spoon at SXSW 2008, Austin Texas. I had attended a few South by Southwest music festivals back in the nineties, when it was smaller and friendlier. But after returning a decade later, it has grown into a massive corporate show crammed with people, impossible to get into any shows unless you spend hundreds of dollars on hard-to-get wristbands.
Heading on up on the first full day of SXSW 2008 on March 13, 2008, I decided to forgo the impossible-to-get wristbands, and take in two of the free shows. Austin is usually a very crowded city, but when you add in tens of thousands of music enthusiasts it becomes an absolute zoo.
The first show was an early evening affair at the Bat Cave in the Auditorium - only a few hundred people to see Australian pop singer Sia. She's a fairly upbeat, breezy performer that sounds similar to Jem or Jewel or Dido. Even though she's been singing for over a decade, she only recently hit it big in the US when one of her songs appeared on the show Six Feet Under, and her fourth album in early 2008 peaked at an impressive 26th on the Billboard Top 200.
Small venue, easy to get fairly close to the stage, although it was frequently too dark to get a good photo with the low shutter speed on my camera. Sia and her backup band opened with one of her hit songs 'Buttons' wearing neon dayglo outfits in the dark, then the lights came up for the rest of the set. The performance was being recorded for a DirecTV broadcast, so there's plenty of videos of the show online: (Link)
After that, it was down to the shores of Lady Bird Lake for the massive outdoor venue set up for the major show headliners. As thousands upon (tens of) thousands of people filed in in the fading sunset for one of the big shows of the whole year - Spoon. They had just swept the Austin Music Awards with seven awards, including Best Band, Best Album, and Best Song for 2008.
Spoon is one of Austin's most successful bands of the past decade, toiling away in relative obscurity until breaking out recently with a number of TV appearances and hits. Starting out as a jangly, noisy Pixies clone, they have dramatically refined their sound, comparable to Pavement, Arcade Fire or Elliott Smith. Their fifth album, 'Gimme Fiction', debuted at 44th place on the Billboard Top 200, and their sixth album in 2007, 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga', debuted at an astounding 10th place.
The show was huge, the lakeshore was packed, and Spoon put on a great show. Playing several of their most well known songs as well as songs off their recent album for about an hour. It was completely dark, and I was very far from the stage, and my camera very limited, but I did my best and got some nic fuzzy-yet-interesting shots. After that, I headed downtown to try and catch some other shows at various venues (especially the international performers), but it was quite impossible to get into anything with anything less than VIP status. So, I decided to call it a night and head back home.
