If you're reading this, then welcome to notes on a peculiar baseball anomaly: an official MLB home game for the Toronto Blue Jays...in Dunedin, Florida. (Due to the pandemic, they've been displaced and haven't actually played a home game in Toronto since 2019.)
For the entirety of the shortened 2020 season, they played their home games at their AAA club's stadium in Buffalo, New York (where they'll be returning beginning in June 2021.) For the beginning of the 2021 campaign, though, they've played their home games at TD Ballpark here in Dunedin, which is their spring training facility. (For the record, I have been to a home game in Toronto -- the day after I was at a home game for the Montreal Expos, and all of this was before digital photography back in 1996.) So, perhaps this is a "cheat" to put in my MLB collection, but I don't see it that way since it's an official game, and those are the Jays' home whites. The game even came replete with two national anthems and lots of "Canadian" signage around the outfield.
As for the game itself, it was against the Washington Nationals on 27 April. Max Scherzer took the mound for the Nats. The Jays -- and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. in particular -- enjoyed that. They knocked him around for 7 runs (5 earned) en route to a 9-5 win.
Vlad was responsible for 7 of those runs with three home runs: a grand slam to left center in the 3rd, a solo shot to dead center in the 5th (pictured here circling the bases) -- both off Scherzer, and sliced a two-run homer over the right field wall (pictured here) in the 7th off Kyle Finnegan.
I like both teams, so enjoyed the game. What I didn't enjoy, though, was the attitude of far too many fans (all seemed to be in my section) who not only disregarded masking regulations, but mocked the pandemic in general. Of all the stadiums I've been to this year, the fans here were the worst, and I felt for the staff, who seemed to genuinely want to do the right thing. (Taking politics out of the equation: a person buys a ticket that agrees to certain conditions, then breaks them. I have a problem with that.)

Further along there was tranquility. A quiet and peaceful place to think about where this trail and other trails in my life were taking me. I often don't know where I am going, but I trust that by trying to do the right thing, go in the direction I think is right, I am heading in the best direction. And I am hopefully doing it in a clam, peaceful and joyful way.

We went to a 20th anniv. screening of "Do The Right Thing" at the Fox Theatre, with Spike Lee and some of the cast in a Q&A session afterwards. Lots of fun, and that movie is still amazing.

I arrived at what I thought was the Rose Garden and Peace Garden, where I intended to scatter half the contents. I contemplated the Peace garden, but my mother's disposition was anything but peaceful, so rejected this. I finally decided on a pink rose bush which was in early bloom, and was amazed and shocked to discover the inscription on an adjacent bench, "With love to our mother", whose married name was also Hammond, like hers... and "So happy here", something she always said about this place as well. If this wasn't a sign that I was doing the right thing ! When I saw this, I broke down and sobbed... I scattered the ashes on the rose bush and went to sit on the bench. It was quite gloomy, overcast weather but at that moment a beam of light, like a spot, broke through the trees directly towards me. Quite overwhelming. After as I was leaving, I realized that the formal rose garden, which would have been more to her preference, was actually on the other side of the Peace Garden... so she might have been indicating to me that I was in the wrong spot (!), but as the bench did contain our name, I choose not to believe this!

A few dozen people, the majority Jews, turned out at the JFRE (Jewish Federation Real Estate) “Legends and Leaders” breakfast on October 21, 2022. to protest the planned 76ers Arena in Chinatown.
With signs, banners, songs and chants, the participants challenged the predatory development schemes being peddled by David Adelman and Josh Harris, 76ers Arena proponents and billionaire developers.
The event is billed as a chance to “network and shmooze with Philadelphia’s top real estate developers and professionals,” but it is a shameless attempt to sell an Arena to other Jewish developers and investors with apparently no recognition that Chinatown, the last remaining community of color in Center City Philadelphia and one of the last few vital and thriving Chinatowns on the East Coast is an asset and a treasure.
We say: shame! A shonde!
• As Jews, we oppose a 76ers Arena being built in Chinatown without regard to community needs or desires.
• We support community demands for a fair process and proof that there is long-term community benefit involved: both for Chinatown and Philadelphia.
We say to JFRE: Do The Right Thing. People Over Profit. No More Sacrifice Zones. No short-term bonanzas for investors with long-term costs shouldered by communities of color. No theft of beloved community. #No Arena in Chinatown!

A few dozen people, the majority Jews, turned out at the JFRE (Jewish Federation Real Estate) “Legends and Leaders” breakfast on October 21, 2022. to protest the planned 76ers Arena in Chinatown.
With signs, banners, songs and chants, the participants challenged the predatory development schemes being peddled by David Adelman and Josh Harris, 76ers Arena proponents and billionaire developers.
The event is billed as a chance to “network and shmooze with Philadelphia’s top real estate developers and professionals,” but it is a shameless attempt to sell an Arena to other Jewish developers and investors with apparently no recognition that Chinatown, the last remaining community of color in Center City Philadelphia and one of the last few vital and thriving Chinatowns on the East Coast is an asset and a treasure.
We say: shame! A shonde!
• As Jews, we oppose a 76ers Arena being built in Chinatown without regard to community needs or desires.
• We support community demands for a fair process and proof that there is long-term community benefit involved: both for Chinatown and Philadelphia.
We say to JFRE: Do The Right Thing. People Over Profit. No More Sacrifice Zones. No short-term bonanzas for investors with long-term costs shouldered by communities of color. No theft of beloved community. #No Arena in Chinatown!
Legitimate community Jewish Legends and Leaders spoke—people who truly represent ethical and principled investment in long-term community well-being.
