This guy's doing the right thing, riding in the bike path. But I'd have to agree with those who say that delivery cyclists break the rules more often than commuters.
Its no mystery why, either. I don't think it has much to do with their level of education, ability to understand English, or other factors like that. It's their job to deliver stuff. They get paid more the more stuff they deliver. Just like cab drivers who drive recklessly to get to a fare first. They have a financial incentive to break the rules. Duh.
The people who like to complain about delivery cyclists should ask themselves: is that guy delivering my own meal? Or my neighbor's? When was the last time I told a delivery person, or the employing merchant, that I liked, or didn't like, the way the delivery people rode their bikes? And what have I done to help enact the only measure that has a realistic chance of changing the conduct of delivery cyclists--the pending legislation that would require their employers to pay the traffic summonses issued to them?
And if you really dislike the delivery cyclists, then stop ordering in! But at least stop sitting on your fat ass hating on all cyclists because what of the delivery cyclists bringing you your breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on a snowy morning are doing to get it to you faster!
Donnie has made such improvements in the time he's been with us. He's a naturally reserved cat -- no surprise, really, since he and his buddy Duke were housed inside a small motor home for what I think was most of Donnie's life. (He's the younger of the two.) He's also declawed. A man had taken care of them out there since his wife didn't want them in the house. I'm not sure it was the best of care, given they came to us with 8-10 flea collars on EACH of them. But he evidently tried and thought he was doing the right thing. But when he died, his wife just dumped them at Petco saying she wasn't about to deal with them.
Donnie, it turned out, had also managed to eat some netting -- we think while in the motor home, mostly because we can't think of anywhere else he would have had access to something like this -- which made him get very sick. He had exploratory surgery to find out what was going on, and the wad of netting was found. Since that was removed, Donnie's health has improved in leaps and bounds (it's so nice to see him eating well and not vomiting). But he is still a timid cat. Very friendly, very gentle, you can reach to pet him with no problem whatsoever and he's a lap cat, but he gets nervous. I took this photo of him on Susanne's lap (he walked into her lap all on his own, I was so proud of him) last Saturday.
This Friday, though, I was helping out as a replacement since one of the regular people couldn't make the shift. And when Jackie was bringing Donnie back to his cage, he suddenly spooked and got loose from her, crashing into the shelves nearby. Since we are in a large retail store and do not want the cats getting loose or potentially out the big doors that open whenever someone walks near them, especially a cat who would be as scared as Donnie, we both dove to catch him. Position-wise, it just turned out that I was near his head and Jackie was near his tail. I got a good scruff on him, but the angle I was coming from meant that he was able to twist in his panic and bite me twice. I got him back in his kennel, promptly did appropriate first aid -- let them bleed, run water over them, don't staunch/bandage -- and then got myself over to urgent care.
So I have 7 punctures between my hands. Despite having 4 more holes than the first time I was bitten about two years ago and bites on both hands instead of one (that time completely my own fault and happened in my own home), these are easier to manage than the last time. And the doctor was so happy with my first aid and getting over there right away that she didn't try to give me the 3-day IV antibiotic (*shudder*) and I didn't need any shots (since I got a tetanus two years ago). I'm just on an oral antibiotic and band-aids. And no nerves were hit this time. So they're sore and a nuisance, but not too disabling.
And poor Donnie. Not his fault, he was so scared. He peed on Jackie at the same time he was biting me. Having both of us grabbing him made him even more scared, but we couldn't let him get loose. I got a report after Saturday's shift that he was doing okay, so I'm glad. I'll see him on Tuesday and will give him lots of love. I'm going to need an extra person to go in for set-up and tear-down, because I don't think I'll be able to manage the pens, but I can do the middle stuff.
Haven't tried holding my camera yet, but photos will likely be scarce for a little while.

At Wells Fargos' world headquarters in San Francisco, dozens locked down in front of the banks' iconic stagecoach the day before its' annual shareholders meeting.
This year, Wells Fargo, Citibank and Bank of America all face historic shareholder resolutions calling on the banks to take the climate impacts of their investments more seriously. While the bank boards are advising the shareholders to vote against these resolutions, actions across the country are sending a different message. Do the right thing - Support these resolutions. Invest in our futures, not climate chaos.
Roughly 20 people were arrested at this action.
If you're reading this, then welcome to notes on a peculiar baseball anomaly: an official MLB home game for the Toronto Blue Jays...in Dunedin, Florida. (Due to the pandemic, they've been displaced and haven't actually played a home game in Toronto since 2019.)
For the entirety of the shortened 2020 season, they played their home games at their AAA club's stadium in Buffalo, New York (where they'll be returning beginning in June 2021.) For the beginning of the 2021 campaign, though, they've played their home games at TD Ballpark here in Dunedin, which is their spring training facility. (For the record, I have been to a home game in Toronto -- the day after I was at a home game for the Montreal Expos, and all of this was before digital photography back in 1996.) So, perhaps this is a "cheat" to put in my MLB collection, but I don't see it that way since it's an official game, and those are the Jays' home whites. The game even came replete with two national anthems and lots of "Canadian" signage around the outfield.
As for the game itself, it was against the Washington Nationals on 27 April. Max Scherzer took the mound for the Nats. The Jays -- and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. in particular -- enjoyed that. They knocked him around for 7 runs (5 earned) en route to a 9-5 win.
Vlad was responsible for 7 of those runs with three home runs: a grand slam to left center in the 3rd, a solo shot to dead center in the 5th (pictured here circling the bases) -- both off Scherzer, and sliced a two-run homer over the right field wall (pictured here) in the 7th off Kyle Finnegan.
I like both teams, so enjoyed the game. What I didn't enjoy, though, was the attitude of far too many fans (all seemed to be in my section) who not only disregarded masking regulations, but mocked the pandemic in general. Of all the stadiums I've been to this year, the fans here were the worst, and I felt for the staff, who seemed to genuinely want to do the right thing. (Taking politics out of the equation: a person buys a ticket that agrees to certain conditions, then breaks them. I have a problem with that.)

Action must be taken to stop a tax system where wealthy companies and individuals can fiddle with the books while millions live in poverty and hunger. At Wells Fargos' world headquarters in San Francisco, dozens locked down in front of the banks' iconic stagecoach the day before its' annual shareholders meeting.
This year, Wells Fargo, Citibank and Bank of America all face historic shareholder resolutions calling on the banks to take the climate impacts of their investments more seriously. While the bank boards are advising the shareholders to vote against these resolutions, actions across the country are sending a different message. Do the right thing - Support these resolutions. Invest in our futures, not climate chaos.
Roughly 20 people were arrested at this action.

The critically endangered Sumatran elephant population of Seblat, North Bengkulu, Sumatra is under renewed threat due to the coal mining company PT INMAS ABADI trying to obtain 600 hectares of this protected forest to expand their coal output. This process is happening through local government avenues and we request immediate intervention from the highest levels of office in Indonesia to help maintain TWA Seblat Conservation and Landscape Area as it is intended to be. A habitat for the Sumatran elephant and many other endangered species.
TWA Seblat Conservation Area
The TWA Conservation Area located in Seblat North Bengkulu is the last remaining habitat for an estimated 37 critically endangered wild elephants along with many other endangered species such as estimated two Sumatran tigers within the 7000 hectare protected forests of TWA Seblat. TWA Seblat is also home to ECC, the Elephant Conservation Center, the home of 12 captive Sumatran elephants where for more than 25 years conservation efforts have taken place to ensure the elephant population of North Bengkulu remains protected. The ECC is also under threat as PT INMAS ABADI have plans to relocate the elephants and the camp in December, 2018 if the 600 hectares of protected forest is handed over.
Bona the Icon of Bengkulu and the ECC
The ECC (Elephant Conservation Center) is home to 12 captive elephants. Bona is the youngest and is an 8 year old orphaned Sumatran elephant calf in the care of the Elephant Conservation Centre (ECC) in Seblat, North Bengkulu, Sumatra. Bona survived from an early age due to the amazing efforts from a team of passionate supporters from all over the world helping Bona by providing life saving milk supplements and has now become one of Bengkulu’s tourist icons to visit in the province of Bengkulu. On behalf of all of our global and local supporters, we are shocked to hear the ECC in Seblat Bengkulu will be relocated along with Bona and the 12 elephants to accommodate an expansion of coal mining in the protected TWA Seblat Conservation and Landscape Area.
Bona and the ECC in the past 6 years has become a big part of the growing tourism for the Bengkulu province. Together with tourism bodies and local communities each year tourism to ECC has increased and eco tourism in the surrounding villages has become part of the sustainable income plan for the region. Moving the ECC camp will destroy all this hard work and remove one of the tourism icons from Bengkulu2020. The ECC stands out as a facility that is doing the right thing by their elephants in a country where Sumatran elephant populations are rapidly declining.
The Great Work in Conservation
Over the last 25 years many local and international NGO’s have assisted with the work in conserving the critically endangered elephant and many continue to do so recognizing the great crisis that this endangered species as well as many other species face. Many local and international NGO’s continue to work with the local conservation agency directly inside the ECC and TWA Seblat Conservation and Landscape Area. From breeding programs to elephant patrol units helping protect the conservation area. The work and efforts of many over many years will vanish upon issuing the more than 600 hectares of protected forest and the relocation of the elephants from ECC.
Local and or internal NGO’s developing projects and assisting with the conservation of the Sumatran elephant directly inside the ECC/PLG Seblat. Whose many years and great effort will be reversed upon the relocation of the ECC elephants.

The Eco Tourism Potential
Eco-tourism is rapidly becoming a popular tourist attraction in South East Asia. As more people prefer to visit elephant sanctuaries and conservation projects caring for elephants in their natural habitat. Sumatra could therefore consider being the forefront of Eco-tourism, instead of pushing the elephants of ECC Seblat aside to make way for coal mining inside the protected TWA Seblat Conservation and Landscape Area we should be learning to celebrate these amazing animals and conserving the protected habitats for future generations. Not destroying for short term gain while compromising the plan to conserve this protected species. The location of ECC should remain where it has been for decades and the elephants should not be relocated in order to continue providing support for the local community. By doing the right thing and leaving TWA Seblat and the ECC untouched, Indonesia may keep its International image as a country trying to preserve its natural environment and wildlife and not a country exploiting it.

Should Bona, ECC and TWA Seblat Conservation and Landscape Area remain untouched, many people local and international will continue to provide financial support for the development of the ECC conservation and tourism projects surrounding Seblat. We fully support Bona’s important role as an ambassador for Eco Tourism in the province of Bengkulu and of course as part of the patrol team protecting TWA Seblat from deforestation continuing the important role of conserving the surrounding wild habitat for the remaining wild herds. Her species are critically endangered, it’s very important to Bona’s friends around the globe that the Sumatran elephant is protected for the sake of the future generation. Bona has already raised significant awareness by her story, and we strongly believe that the ECC should continue to use her story for the benefit of the survival of her species through eco-tourism and conservation patrols.
We kindly ask for you to implement the following IMMEDIATELY:

WORK WITH INTERNAL TRAVEL AGENCIES TO ENSURE BONA AND TWA SEBLAT REMAINS AN AMBASSADOR AND A PLACE FOR SUSTAINABLE ECO TOURISM THROUGHOUT BENGKULU
4. STOP PLTU COAL MINING TELUK SEPANG, BENGKULU AND TRANSITION TO CLEAN ENERGY
Tourists love to visit Bona at the ECC and see her enjoying life with the other camp elephants, this would be a respected move by the authorities of Indonesia to bring about this change.

Across Canada people have been standing up to tell the G8 to do the right thing: tackle tax havens. Action must be taken to stop a tax system where wealthy companies and individuals can fiddle with the books while millions live in poverty and hunger. At Wells Fargos' world headquarters in San Francisco, dozens locked down in front of the banks' iconic stagecoach the day before its' annual shareholders meeting.
This year, Wells Fargo, Citibank and Bank of America all face historic shareholder resolutions calling on the banks to take the climate impacts of their investments more seriously. While the bank boards are advising the shareholders to vote against these resolutions, actions across the country are sending a different message. Do the right thing - Support these resolutions. Invest in our futures, not climate chaos.
