Avant l'arrivée du tourisme dans l'île, l'eau des habitations et pour l'irrigation venait principalement de ces puits dont l'eau était extraite par un dromadaire qui allait et venait pour faire descendre et remonter une outre en peau de chèvre (noria). Ces puits ont été pour la plupart abandonnés : diminution considérable de l'activité agricole, installation d'eau "de la ville". Mais restent les constructions qui parsèment l'île...
Djerba, an island off the southeastern coast of Tunisia, is home to one of North Africa's only thriving (albeit small) Jewish communities. Roughly 1200 Jews live there, running Jewish schools, synagogues, and Kosher restaurants. Here, three generations of jewelers sit in their synagogue — Michael Mamou, his father Youssef Mamou, and his grandfather TKTKTK Mamou, who all run the family store in Houmt Souk.
