We Want to Go Back! But #OnlyWhenItsSafe!
Teachers protested at a socially distant standout to call on Governor Baker to take action in support of safe and healthy public schools and colleges. Supporters urged Governor Baker to:
1. Establish a uniform requirement for all districts to start the year with a comprehensive distance learning plan. Provide immediate support for access to the internet where it is lacking.
2. Set clear health and safety standards that must be met for the gradual return of in-person learning, including:
•Indoor air quality and ventilation in school buildings that meet appropriate regulatory and industry standards.
•Rapid COVID-19 testing that is accessible, routine, and free to students and staff.
•Community and public health benchmarks are established, met, and reported transparently.
Distance learning programs present incredible challenges and opportunities for parents and students. Everyone’s circumstances are different, even digitally savvy parents may struggle with educational technology.
Here are ways for parents to make the best of the new learning setup and environment to improve their children’s productivity through these easy and practical methods:
1. Mimic a classroom environment
Studying in bed reduces focus since most kids associate beds with comfort and sleep. Set up an area dedicated for school-focused activities to eliminate distractions and lack of motivation. Programs like Izumi apply collaborative activities with classmates to emulate the typical classroom environment as well.
2. Establish routines and habits
Develop good habits from the start to establish a routine in their day-to-day. Example of habits to help establish your child’s development on their online classes:
* Get plenty of sleep
* Limit screen time before bedtime
* Practice great posture
* Eat healthy and drink lots of water
3. Make sure space is well lit
Reading or focusing too much on a computer screen for too long in a dimly lit area can incur eye strain. Keep that natural light flowing for your child’s eye protection!
4. Minimal use of internet when your child is studying
Minimize overall internet use during your children’s online classes. This will allow continuity and consistency, preventing risks of disconnection for them to better focus and retain class discussions.
5. Develop their independent learning skills
Children learn at their own pace, and they differ in learning capabilities. Providing leeway for them to pick-up concepts themselves coupled with well-timed or well-placed assistance from parents and teachers will develop independence and self-esteem.
6. Use a learning device that is suited for your child
Providing a device with a big enough screen is advisable for the child to see the teacher and activities clearly. In online programs like Izumi’s Nippon Math, sensei’s (teachers) utilize application tools to maintain students’ attention for them to better focus on the task at hand.
7. Begin and end the day by checking-in
Follow and guide your children through processes to assist them in organizing tasks and setting priorities. Practice constant communication with your children to be aware of their quirks, acknowledge their milestones, and also form a deeper relationship!

Winston-Salem State University was founded as the Slater Industrial Academy by Simon Green Atkins on September 28, 1892. Atkins had an audacious vision to create an institution where every student would meet the challenges of the day equipped with an education designed to intellectually prepare the “head, hand, and heart.” Twenty-five students attended classes in a one-room frame structure and were taught by a single instructor.
In 1925, the General Assembly of North Carolina recognized the school’s curriculum above high school, changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers College, and empowered it under authority of the State Board of Education to confer appropriate degrees. Winston-Salem Teachers College thus became the first black institution in the nation to grant degrees for teaching the elementary grades.
In response to a growing medical community emerging in the Winston-Salem area, the School of Nursing was established in 1953, awarding graduates the degree of Bachelor of Science. In recognition of the university’s growing curriculum and expanding role, the North Carolina General Assembly of 1963 authorized changing the name from Winston-Salem Teachers College to Winston-Salem State College.
A statute designating Winston-Salem State College as Winston-Salem State University received legislative approval in 1969, and in 1972, Winston-Salem State University became one of the 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina, subject to the control of a Board of Governors.
Since its founding in 1892, Winston-Salem State University has grown from a one-room frame structure to more than 39 buildings located on a picturesque 117-acre campus overlooking the woodlands of Salem Lake in the heart of Winston-Salem.
The university is now number one in the UNC system for North Carolina job placement for graduates and number one in the UNC system for the average salary for triad-area graduates. It is home to an award-winning student activities center, top 25 division II football, basketball and baseball programs, and offers students 100-plus student organizations.
With a faculty-to-student ratio of 16:1, the university enrolls approximately 5,000 students and offers more than 40 bachelor’s programs, 9 master’s programs, two professional doctoral programs, and two certificate programs.

Week 1 – Coastal
Way back in 2011 I started a Project 52, it lasted for three months before I gave up, mainly on account of having started studying for a diploma on a distance learning basis and thereby finding myself incredibly short on time. I’m no longer studying, although time still feels short, but regardless I embark on another effort.
There’s something about the North Norfolk coast that sits comfortably with me, most likely on account of having spent many a year there on holiday as a child. It is a small world, for when Cat and I met one another we soon discovered that for many years we had both holidayed in the same destination. Fast forward a decade or two and my parents have since retired there, with me returning as often as life and the eight or so hour return trip allows. On New Year ’s Day we made the trip over and I was perhaps one of the few people in the country to have enjoyed an ice cream at the beach on New Year’s Day.
So, what is it that appeals quite so much about a break on the coast? There must be inherent nostalgia, but it perhaps now holds its own appeal because it represents a less stressful time, both in the world and my own life. The purpose of this 365 is to provide the flexibility for a solitary photo, if that takes my fancy, or a more comprehensive look at the week.

Another negative component to distance learning is the limited capability for instructors to provide feedback on digital submissions. This aspect is improving with enhancements to course management systems.
