Distance, I have a lot of, took this photo traveling at 100klms/hr (passenger) thought it turned out alright.

Social Distancing Barriers Well St

Paisley’s west end residents woke today to find Well street being lined with red and white, water filled barriers to enforce social disincline. The new health plans now in place to protect the public from covid 19, have already seen work carried out along Glasgow road where one worker told me. “Depending on the size of the roads, both sides that have shops and chemist will be lined with water filled barriers, which will have hand rails to prevent people climbing over”. “Though on Well street we`re still waiting for the hand rails, so two lots of barriers will be stacked on top of one and other for now”. One of the workers told me, “This should have been done at the very start of lock down and it all seems rather pointless and a huge waste of money”. I asked another, what would you being doing if you went doing this and I was told, “Filling pot holes”. Which we all know are badly needed filled all across the UK.

They also told me the council had paid £100.000 for the barriers, but whether this was UK taxpayer government funds, local council budget funs or EU money, no one knows. Plus what cost to the tax payer for all the water pouring down the street, will all those water filled barriers needing to be drained away once there finally removed, is anyone’s guess. Let alone the environmental costs for all this plastic.

Some residents like my sister Margaret Cameron wasn’t happy, arguing it was a waste of money and it should have been better used to improve the west end that’s long looked run down. While another agreed they should have painted yellow lines to stop parking and show social distance markings. Yet another pointed out, its just an excuse to widen all the pavements and their making it up as they go alone

Before leaving Graeme of Graeme`s the butchers who told me what was going on that got me to get my camera out. He pointed out “the barriers would be up for 18 months to stop people parking right beside those social distancing while waiting to get into the shops”. Which is strange, as I remember not so long ago the bus stops at the top of Well St were removed from the top of the hill which forced many to walk further and even threatened the loss of customers only for another news story to come out that said they should never have been removed? Now this!

Regardless of people now being able to walk on the road behind the barriers, what about those who need their cars to get around. Where will they park and how far will they be forced to walk after finding a place to park, especially if they have mobility problems. No one seems to know.

Intaglio engraving

30x25cm

This is an experiment with an intaglio engraving on plastic, which I decided not to print as printing it would hinder the message of the artwork. The most significant part of this artwork is the distance between the hands, which is meant to represent a close relationship between two people, from afar. However, as the viewer nears the artwork, the distance between the fingers and a part of the palm should become the focus. Ultimately, the closeness of the hands never lets the distance to be an evident factor, hence the ambiguity of the message is left to be interpreted by the audience and their current emotions when viewing the artwork.

Marden church sits close to the River Lugg some distance to the south west of the main part of the village. The site chosen was apparently where King / St Ethelbert was murdered by King Offa and originally buried (his remains were later transferred to a shrine in nearby Hereford). Such thoughts of a violent moment in history are far from one's mind at this pleasant and peaceful spot today (my only encounter here was with a very friendly local cat!).

Most of the present building is of 13th and 14th century date, the most noticeable feature is the tapering spire at the north west corner which is almost detached (though it touches the north aisle there is no direct access to it from within the church, it is entered instead by an external door on the east side and is often open to visitors). The proportions of the church seem a little odd at first glance with the nave roof being unusually high, but the rarest feature of all is the polygonal apse to the 14th century chancel, a common form on the Continent but quite unusual in England.

Inside the nave impresses with its sense of space height in particular, a very much vertical emphasis, whilst by contrast the chancel arch is low, revealing only a glimpse of the apsed chancel beyond. Most of the windows are clear glazed so the interior is fairly light. There are a few minor memorials of interest in the chancel, including a brass of an Elizabethan lady wearing a spiky tiara.

Marden church is normally kept open and welcoming to visitors and is well worth a look, particularly if one finds the tower open and is intrepid enough to climb it.

We decided to walk a shorter distance today as the previous day was quite long and steep. We spent the morning walking in to Gavarnie with great views of the Cirque de Gavarnie (not a cloud in the sky!), we had lunch by the river with a chicken for company and then instead of walking the loop of the cirque, went a more direct path up to the cabane. We had left the GR10 at this stage but were still walking on relatively well trod routes. A cabane is basically like a Boffy, an unmanned cabin that you can stay in. After 30th of September the summer season is considered over, all the manned refugios close, a lot of shops/hotels and bus routes close and really these cabanes are the only way to have a roof over your head. The plus side of walking in October is that over the 4 days we didn’t see anyone who wasn’t a day walker so we were isolated at night. Cabane de Pailla was basically a small room with a wooden platform for sleeping and a fireplace but it was in the most amazing location, next to a huge bank of mountains with small glaciers. We got in about 4pm which meant we had a good few hours to enjoy the sun, collect some wood for the fire, dry out our tent from the night before and spot a lone Isard (native deer).

C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) is an Oort cloud comet with an inbound hyperbolic orbit, discovered in May 2017 at a distance beyond the orbit of Saturn when it was 16 AU (2.4 billion km) from the Sun. As of June 2022, the 3-sigma uncertainty in the current distance of the comet from the Sun is ±5000 km. The comet is record breaking because it is already becoming active at such a distance. Only comet Hale–Bopp produced such a show from that distance with a similar nucleus. However, this comet will not be as visible as Hale–Bopp was in 1997 in part because it does not come nearly as close to the Sun. Astronomers had never seen an active inbound comet this far out, where sunlight is 1/225th its brightness as seen from Earth. Temperatures, correspondingly, are at -440 °F (-262 °C) in the Oort cloud. However, as it was approaching the Sun at a distance of 16 AU at discovery, a mix of ancient ices on the surface containing oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide began to sublimate and shed as dust. This material expands into a vast 130,000 km (81,000 mi) wide halo of dust, called a coma, enveloping the solid nucleus.
