A moment of excitement ...

View from a wide angle lens..

Distance: 10400 light-years

Sharpless-132 is an faint emission nebula located in the constellation of Cepheus.

Captured from my backyard September 2024. It was interesting to see how much oxygen the L-Extreme filter was able to extract from the nebula in the "legs and belly" of the lion nebula.

This little guy has apparently heard the news and politely stayed behind the trees today. He looked wistful, but that was probably because I have bear proofed my feeders. His Daddy would have a better chance but this guy is probably a yearling and hasn't figured out all of Yogi Bear's tricks yet.

Another shot from my window.

First day back on the tube since 10th March.

Newly installed 2 metre sticker really does want to keep a distance.

I sent this picture to a bokeh contest on www.ljosmyndakeppni.is/challengeresults.php?challengeid=203 - where I became second! :)

Schleswig Holstein - Long Distance Hiking E1

1.02 Oeversee - Schleswig

I believe this is Long Peek which is 14,255 ft. plus I hear there's a trail to the top. The back range can be seen from Barr Lake State Park.

A walk up one of the three (that I know of) landfill ski hills in south eastern Michigan presents a nice -though microscopic- view of Brendel Lake in the distance. Closer, in the foreground is the main slope at Alpine Valley and a ski lift in the lower left corner.

The photo has an HDR look to it, but done with the same exposure for all photos. The bright and dark areas were then compressed in Lightroom.

Of course, taking this photo hiding behind the case really had nothing to do with social distancing and everything to do with me sneaking around to get photos!

Amv try's to find a way to cross the river

Went down to the gorgeous West Wittering(yes, it's really called that) beach for this shot. The tide was out exposing the sandbars and the sun was just about to drop behind the Isle of Wight in the distance.

So we say goodbye to 2016, for those of us with a liberal world view this has not been a good year. Trump and Brexit have shown us that the world is full of people who are seemingly driven by hate and think in ways that seem entirely alien to us. I dislike this new post-truth world where facts are only facts if they "feel" right and where experts in a field are called scaremongers or on the side of the elite if they raise concerns. Fingers crossed that 2017 is a better year - Hope springs eternal.

This shot could be a reshoot for a couple of the themes this year. in the end i've decided it's a four in one kill for the Elements - Earth(sand), Water(sea), Fire(sun) and Air(sky).

I know some of you are probably wondering about the horizon, I'm pretty convinced it's level, the issue is there are a couple of sandbars and another layer of sea further out on the LHS and the RHS of the image has the Isle of Wight, the edge of the Solent Bay, even more sandbars and some clouds.

Week 52 - Reshoot.

Photo used by kind permission of Trevor Ermel. His caption reads:

"63346 (Class Q6) heading west at Derwenthaugh (between Dunston and Blaydon) with a coal train for Stella South power station on 20th May 1967. I think it was recovering from a signal stop, hence the steam from the cylinder drains cocks. The bridge is over the River Derwent, flowing into the Tyne on the left. The buffer stop on the right was part of the NCB's Derwenthaugh system, which I got to know once steam on BR had finished in this part of the country in September 1967."

Derwenthaugh signal box can be seen on the right just after the bridge over the River Derwent. The engine has just passed signal no. 58 and the fine array of signals in the area can be seen in the distance.

Sony A7C + Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8 Distagon

April 9, 2020

Sunset at Paine's Creek Beach. There were lots of people parked in their cars, watching through their windows. It was a cold and windy night, so it didn't seem too odd that most chose to stay in their cars.

Still, many small family groups of people ventured out onto the storm ravaged beach to watch the the sky's drama going on. People did keep their distance.
