Containment booms are being displayed around the brown pelican colony in Breton island. The brown pelican is Louisiana's state bird. Oil leaked from the Deepwater Horizon wellhead, is slowly approaching the coast of Louisiana, East of the mouth of the Mississippi river. The BP leased oil platform exploded April 20 and sank after burning, leaking an estimate of more than 200,000 gallons of crude oil per day from the broken pipeline to the sea.

I found an old wire postcard turning display in the trash one day, and decided to bring it home because I thought it would be great for my comics. I modified it by cutting off every other holder on the larger sides so that the comics would fit. I had to sand down the places I cut so they wouldn't cut people (or the comics) to pieces. I got a good cut on my thumb in the process.

An hour or so later, and here's the result! It even has a place on the top that I could put a sign into. I plan on bringing this to MoCCA so that the many of us sharing a table can all display our comics. Hopefully it will draw some attention.

I can't believe this was my first ever fireworks photo but it's true. At a display a friend was doing ( 1000 people, not a backgarden event!)

I love setting up little displays throughout my home. A vignette of vintage mannequin heads, hats and doll clothes.

ELECTRIC PUMPING JACKS

By 1946, John Hawley and his engineers were looking for a method to pump oil wells without central powers and flowing heads. They experimented with various designs for electric pumping jacks and produced one that could pump two wells with a single rodline. Another prototype was an extremely heavy design that was never put into production, but its off center axle became the basis of all Hawley’s future designs.

NORTHERN ORDNANCE

Near the end of World War II, Minneapolis industrialist John B. Hawley, Jr. was convinced that oil shortages would occur by 1950. In 1943, his Northern Ordnance Company purchased oil lands in 18 states including Pennsylvania and made changes in the oil fields of Forest, Venango, and Warren Counties. Large compressors replaced smaller ones, steel spudding machines replaced portable wooden drilling rigs, and flowing heads and electric jacks replaced rodline units. Hawley sold out to Quaker State Refining Corporation in 1951. This display of machinery was done with assistance from Quaker State’s Titusville Office.
