Emergency dispatchers and calltakers from around the Kansas City region attend this year's 911 Day at the K event at Kauffman Stadium.
Company 73 (Rose Tree) was originally dispatched for the report of a vehicle fire. When 73-9 went enroute he was advised by fireboard that the homeowner was reporting the house may be involved. He asked for the building fire upgrade bringing the remainder of 73, 23 (Media), Truck 46 (Rocky Run) and RIT 41 (Newtown Square). Upon arrival he had two vehicles fully involved up against the A/D corner of the house and extending up the side of the house. Quint 73 went on location first and started an interior attack while other crews from 73 started working on the vehicle's that were on fire. Crews also had to be cautious because of a live power line being down. Due to the extreme cold temps in the area of 7 degrees with high winds and the rapid fire advance 73-9 asked for the 2nd alarm bringing several other companies from the area. Crews did an amazing job and were able to stop the fire from spreading through the entire house.
Shortly after 10pm the calls began to flood into the Bridgeport Fire dispatch of a vacant 3 story dwelling on fire. Upom arrival command reported a fully involved 3 decker wood frame with the adjacent 3 story exposure also well involved. An external attack was undertaken using several monitors and two aerial trucks. sparks from the fire ignited several brush fires along Interstate 95 for which an additional engine company was dispatched. The origin fire building collapsed prior to my arrival on the scene, crews continued to pour water into the burning exposure building which appeared to be ready o collapse as well. Crews would spend an extended period of time on scene after the knock down to make sure all hot spots were extinguished.

When the parachute loft was constructed in the late 1940s the building was designed to house some of the most essential parts of the smokejumper operation including an administrative office and dispatch center, parachute repair equipment, and a storage area.
A "ready room" was located near the tarmac door where parachutes prepared for fire jumps and jumpsuits waited on hangers for smokejumpers responding to a fire call. The life of every crew member depends upon the work done in the parachute loft. This building is the oldest, standing smokejumper parachute loft in the United States and is listed in the Register of National Historic Places.
Parachutes were raised by a rope in the inspection tower where they were inspected for damage. Damaged parachutes are repaired. The parachute loft had as many as 17 sewing machines of different sizes and capabilities including a large unit that could push a needle through several layers of straps used in harnesses. Most of these were located in the repair room. Material used in and an assortment of repairs different types of threads were kept in a storage area in the attic of the building.
The packing room had tables that were long enough for the parachute and shroudlines to be stretched out. Parachutes were then folded and shroud lines were packed so they pulled out of the pack with the parachute without tangling.
The ready room was where smoke jumpers went to get their fire fighting equipment when the fire alarm with sounded and put on their jumpsuits before boarding the plane.

Here are some pics of our yearly awards night. We are a small organization, but do recognize the importance of showing our employees appreciation and recognition for the hard and great work that they do each day.
Awards that we give out our Telecommunicator of the Year, Team Award and Silent Hero Award. We usally have the event catered, have door prizes, small gift for all employees, the Awards and some type of entertainment; this year was a game of local county history with current and past pictures from around the county. All employees and guests participated in the game and it was a lot of fun. Our employees work hard each and every day of the year, knowing in a split second things can go from humdrum to absolutely crazy. We truly appreciate the work that they do.
Waterbury fire fighters were dispatched for a structure fire at 307-309 Bishop St. As they rolled to the fire it was evident that they would be working as smoke billowing from the vacant apartment building could already be seen for miles. With the building well involved 2 ladder trucks were positioned for a defensive attack and additional companies were requested to stretch in supply lines as well as assist companies already operating on the scene. Approximately 20 minutes in the roof and second floor collapsed pinning fire fighters on the flat roof of one of the exposures. After several tense minutes all were accounted for and it was determined that none of the men were seriously injured. After almost an hour and a half of pouring water into the structure the main body of fire would be knocked down. Even though the adjacent structure was effected by the collapse it appeared that none of the exposures suffered and extensive damage. Fire crews would remain on scene dousing any hot spots and representatives of the City's fire marshal's office were on scene to investigate the scene.
