How Are 911 Dispatchers Trained?
If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? It’s definitely not Ghostbusters. Unlike the 1984 movie Ghostbusters, the greatest threats in our society are most definitely not ghosts, but everyday dangers, and circumstances.
In times that we need help, whether for life threatening or stressful situations, there are people we can actually call to help us out, and they’re called emergency dispatch personnel. They are the humble people whose face we cannot see and are hardly recognized for their hard work.
Emergency dispatch personnel save thousands of lives every day by just picking up the phone and doing their best to help the person on the other side of the line. However, the only way they could do this is if they actually know how to do their job.
A rigorous training is necessary for someone to be able to think up the best recourse in dire situations. In life or death situations every second count. Hence, emergency dispatchers are trained to be able to think of a solution in the shortest time possible.
It is also important for a dispatcher to have excellent communication skills because it is their job to communicate critical information and coordinate the emergency personnel.
What are the Requirements Before Training as a 911 Dispatcher?
Listed below are the major requirements before being allowed to go through the 911 dispatcher training program:
Educational Attainment
Most dispatch centers do not require applicants to have a bachelor or associate’s degree. However, this is most definitely a plus since a degree can signify a candidate has undergone previous training in some aspects that may be helpful to them being a 911 dispatcher.
Dispatch centers per state can vary according to their local legislations. But generally, a high school diploma would be sufficient to get accepted. (1)
Criminal History and Background
The requirements for applicants for becoming a 911 dispatcher include having a clean record. This is to assure that there are no conflicts of interest. They are also required to undergo a lie detector test to ensure that the things they are saying are true.
Physical Fitness and Health
To be allowed to undergo training, candidates are required to prove that they are physically able to perform their duties. This includes mental, psychological, and physical fitness. Applicants are required to have a vision and hearing test before their application. They must also have enough physical fortitude to stay calm in emergency situations.
Citizenship Requirements
Only United States Citizens are allowed to apply for 911 Dispatcher training.
Necessary Skills to Become a 911 Dispatcher
Dispatchers get tons of calls every day; it is important that they attain the necessary skills not just to properly address these calls, but also to maintain a healthy mindset and create a healthy working environment.
Some of the skills required of 911 dispatchers include a strong empathy skill. A strong empathy skill will enable a dispatcher to immerse themselves on the situation of the other person on the other end of the line. This makes formulating a proper approach easier and more effectively.
They are also required to have a strong communication skill to avoid miscommunications between them, the victims, and the dispatch team. Two of the most important skills are having good leadership and problem-solving skills. Other important skills are good typing skills and expertise in dispatch computer-aided software.
911 Dispatcher Training
Most states require dispatchers to have a training certificate before they start working. However, even those that do not still require that their dispatchers undergo some kind of training. Dispatchers are trained in two instances, before they start working and during the duration of their employment. (2)
Some of the subjects included in their training are:
911 Dispatcher Roles and Responsibilities– dispatchers should know where their job begins, and where it ends.
Human Anatomy and Physiology– enables dispatchers to know how to approach various types of bodily injuries.
Stress Management– their job deals in very stressful situations; this is why dispatchers themselves need to be able to handle stress without breaking down in the middle of an emergency.
Obtaining Information from Callers– knowing every detail of an emergency enables a dispatcher to communicate the most effective and efficient approach to a problem.
Resource Allocation
Quality Assurance and Recertification
National and State Standards for EMD
Legal and Liability Issues in EMD
Dispatchers are also required to take a 40-hour training course on telecommunications. This includes instructions on how to use communication equipment, verbal training, and actual emergency simulations.
Being a 911 dispatcher is no easy job, but with these training programs, you can rest assured that in the case that you’d need to call them you’re talking to someone who’s well equipped to get you out of trouble.

WATERVLIET ARSENAL, N.Y. ― An emergency dispatch yesterday claiming that a man was seriously injured and sulfur dioxide was leaking at the arsenal’s waste treatment plant was the trigger than eventually brought more than 60 first responders from Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, and Saratoga Counties to the arsenal ̶ all were part of a three-hour hazardous material or HAZMAT exercise.

Shortly after 1 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to a vegetation fire in Vandenberg Village just outside of Lompoc. Winds gusting upwards of 20 MPH propelled the fire through thick vegetation making it difficult to contain the fire. Ultimately progress was stopped after the fire had burned between 3 and 5 acres.

At approximately 10:30 pm Lincoln Fire Rescue were dispatched to an address on Mountainview Road near Konkle Road for a report of a barn on fire. It was reported that the barn is typically used to house animals, however at the time of the fire the animals were believed to be out of the barn; and only hay was being stored inside. Multiple passerbys noticed the flames and called 9-1-1; the orange glow from the fire could be seen below the escarpment illuminating the night sky up the mountain. Firefighters performed a defensive attack once they arrived to the barn fully-involved and gas tanks exploding in the rear. Crews were on scene for several hours to extinguish the blaze and required an excavator to assist with moving debris. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. West Lincoln Fire and Grimsby Fire provided mutual aid tankers to the scene, which was in an area without hydrants.

After 22 rolled north, I staked out a spot just south of Hazel Dell that I could frame the State Capitol along with the signal bridge. I figured ATK Lincoln Service 301 would be along but when they toned up the NS dispatcher with all red signals at Iles, I knew 33J had to be nearby. A pair of nice looking C40-8W's pull a fairly short 33J through Hazel Dell and onward towards Hannibal, Moberly and KC.

Though it may be a little embarrassing that everybody knows it, it is common for Midwesterners to comment on the weather. The topic breaks the ice, so to speak, among strangers and fills silences among friends. Embarrassing though it may be, sometimes the skies simply demand the attention.

The R&N's entire 300-plus-mile network is dispatched from this bay-windowed section of the headquarters building, modeled after an original station on the line. Most of the network is controlled by Centralized Train Control (CTC) wayside signals, while some of it is unsignaled "dark territory" controlled by verbal train orders from the dispatcher.

I would like everyone to meet Bill.
Those of you from St. Louis, Missouri and the Metro-East area of Illinois will probably recognize him. He is Bill McClellan, long time columnist for the St. Louis Post Dispatch. www.stltoday.com/news/local/columns/bill-mcclellan/
Bill was the main speaker at the Memorial Day service held in Waterloo, Illinois. He served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps (as a journalist if I understand correctly) in Vietnam.
I ran up to Bill before things got started and asked if I could take his photo for my project. He was very accommodating and friendly. I shook hands and thanked him and told him he seemed like a real down to earth guy. If you've read any of his columns you would agree. He is also a panelist on the local PBS station's "Donnybrook" program. www.ketc.org/productions/productions_donnybrook.asp
I would have loved to talk to Bill for awhile but I did not want to take up his time and so I quickly went back into the crowd before the ceremony got started.
I won't try to directly quote or out line his speech. It was very good and he did not make a big deal out of his service. He had been invited by Kermit Constantine of our local paper the Republic Times (who just happens to be my fiftieth stranger). Bill promised Kermit he would not go past two or three hours and had observed that Kermit had wisely chosen not to attend that day.
( Kemit did show up later, I ran into him after the event concluded). Bill likes Waterloo and joked that he was glad to be there for something that did not involve a trial! The service took place in front of the Monroe County courthouse where recently, a high profile, heinous criminal trial concluded. Besides human interest stories and politics, Bill covers criminal cases.
The main point of his speech was that we need to remember those who sacraficed their lives but that it is very appropriate to also celebrate today with " barbecues, drinking beer and talking politics" Most of the Marines he was with were fighting for those freedoms. As far as he knew none of them had any geo-political stances.
At the conclusion of the service he was thanked and presented with a couple of gifts by Roy J. May, Commander of the American Legion(Post 747 Waterloo). One of those gifts was a Chicago cubs hat from Kermit. Yes Bill is originally from my hometown Chicago and is a die hard Cubs fan. I really don't care for sports to say the least but anyone who has the "chutzpah" to be a Cubs fan here in "Cardinal country" is alright by me!
(Anyone wishing to talk smack may keep their comments to themselves.)
Thank you Mr. McClellan for coming to Waterloo to speak and for allowing me to take your photograph for my project!
(Sorry Bill, for some reason I feel compelled to call you by your Dad's name. If you happen to read this I profusely apologize for the poor grammar! And that your photo is not as "tack" sharp as it should be.)
Thank you Bill for your service to counrty!!
Bill's photograph is #88 in my 100 strangers project. You can learn more about the project, see other photos and photos by other photoigraphers at: www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/
