On Saturday April 4th, at 4:40pm, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District was dispatched to a reported brush fire just southwest of the intersection of W. South St. and Stieg Rd. After assessing the rapidly moving fire WFRD activated MABAS Box #5-63 to the Box Level at 5:05pm. Then at 5:30pm, with the fire still expanding, WFRD upgraded MABAS Box #5-63 to the 3rd Alarm Level. Agencies from all across northern Illinois responded bringing in brush trucks and other apparatus. At 6:29pm, by the orders of WFRD Command, MABAS Box #5-63 was struck out. By the end more than 80 acres of land had been scorched by the blaze. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported but one firefighter was evaluated for possible heat exhaustion. Crews worked late into the evening hitting many hotspots that still lingered in the fields. The National Weather Service had placed McHenry County under a Fire Weather Watch for conditions leading to low humidity levels and potentially high winds. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

There were no injuries after a fire in a Crystal Lake residence, fire officials said on scene.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department was dispatched about 9:20 a.m. for a reported structure fire at 4611 Terra Cotta Road in Crystal Lake, Deputy Fire Chief Chris Olsen said.

"Upon arrival we found a fire in the second floor of this residence," Olsen said, motioning to the white house. "There was nobody home at the time. It was a bystander or neighbor who called it in."The fire was "quickly" under control, Olsen said, adding crews remained on scene in order to check for hotspots and make sure the fire was completely extinguished.

A window on east side of the building was smoking and visibly charred in the aftermath of the fire.

At about 10:20 a.m., Olsen said the investigation into the cause of the fire was set to begin within the hour.

The response resulted in the closure of Terra Cotta Road, from Old Westbury Road to Hillside Road.

Firefighters from Carpentersville, Wauconda, McHenry, Huntley, among others also were on scene to assist.

All Saints church, Jesus Lane, Cambridge

Detail from St Margaret, by Charles Kempe, 1893

All Saints church was built for the Church of England in 1864 to the designs of the great George Bodley, perhaps the most consistently brilliant of all 19th century English church architects. It is a high Tractarian temple designed in the Decorated style, and is generally considered to be Bodley's masterpiece. Interior decoration includes the work of William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown, Charles Kempe and Frederick Leach.

For many years Cambridge's highest Anglo-catholic church, the congregation gradually dwindled as fashions changed and the population of the parish moved out to the big new housing estates. In 1973, All Saints was declared redundant.

Attempts were made to find a new use, but after three years none had been found. So, in keeping with the redundant churches legislation of the time, All Saints was scheduled for demolition.

There was a national outcry, and at the eleventh hour the church was saved, and vested in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust in 1981. Considerable restoration was needed, and the building was mothballed until the early years of the 21st century, when a massive programme of repairs was carried out.

Since Easter 2007, the church has been open to the public seven days a week.

Scottish Agricultural Industries was a subsidiary of the state-owned Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI to you and me) and produced fertiliser and such like. This interesting building front at the former factory on Salamander Street remains. Interesting that they have both Despatch and Dispatch offices!

On the 1895 Ordnance Survey town plan of Edinburgh, this is marked as a Chemical Works and Bone Works, conveniently located across the road from Leith Slaughter House and Leith Soap Works.

The Montgomery County, MD Emergency Communications Center (ECC) trainees hard at work learning how to process 9-1-1 calls.

Shortly after 2am Prospect Volunteers were dispatched for a structure fire at 64 Cook Rd. First arriving units found a fully involved car fire in the driveway which had extended to the corner of the house. Upon size up of the situation an engine and ladder from Cheshire and an additional tanker from Bethany were requested to the scene and an engine company from Waterbury to headquarters for coverage. With all the residents determined to be out of the house, crews quickly worked on extinguishing the car as others advanced lines through the front door to attack the fast moving structure fire. Fire vented through a partial roof collapse near the origin of the fire and from roof cuts made by the truck crews. The situation was declared under control approximately 45 minutes after dispatch. Investigation of the scene showed a threatening statement spray painted on the garage door near the origin of the fire and witness told police they saw someone fleeing the scene shortly after the fire was discovered. The Prospect Fire Marshal was on scene and in light of the evidence found the State Fire Marshal's Office was called to the scene for a full investigation of the fire.
