Scottish Agricultural Industries was a subsidiary of the state-owned Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI to you and me) and produced fertiliser and such like. This interesting building front at the former factory on Salamander Street remains. Interesting that they have both Despatch and Dispatch offices!

On the 1895 Ordnance Survey town plan of Edinburgh, this is marked as a Chemical Works and Bone Works, conveniently located across the road from Leith Slaughter House and Leith Soap Works.

An exhausted dispatch rider of the 216. Infanterie-Division pauses to get some rest. His unit’s emblem is clearly displayed on the fuel tank of the TWN (Triumph-Werke Nürnberg AG) built Modell 3S 350 motorcycle. The 216. Infanterie-Division was formed on August 26, 1939 and was mainly made up of border guards and reserve forces from the Lower Saxony region. The unit was first deployed defensively to the Siegfried Line during the invasion of Poland but did take part in offensive actions in Holland and France. By December 1941, the division was sent to the Eastern Front and participated in several major battles, including the Battle of Kursk where it suffered significant casualties. The unit would be further decimated during the retreat to the Dnieper River in late 1943 and on November 17, 1943, the 216. Infanterie-Division ceased to exist and was stricken from the combat unit rolls. Some of the remaining troops were sent to Belgium to assist with the formation of the 272. Infanterie-Division while others were absorbed by the 102. Infanterie-Division.

Dispatcher, Jaclyn, works on the morning report.

Taken as part of a series for a project at university, this gentleman kindly agreed to be photographed and like a true professional didn't let my constant snapping phase him in the slightest.

This is the Dispatchers panel from Fern Rock Yard. This controlled all the trains in and out of Fern Rock Station on SEPTA. This panel was a direct wire and only had protection through the relays. The yard switches were not protected, if there was a train on it and you throw a switch, it threw the switch under the train. This panel was made by Union Switch and Signal Company of Swissvale, PA. This panel is a Style C Relay Interlocking Machine (Unit Lever Type) and was made in 1950's. This panel was replaced in the late 1980's or early 1990's. It has been rewired by me and uses simple logic to interlock the signals with the switches. The unit was not straight like this, the yard panel was turned at a 45* angle and had a desk. To fit better in my room I did not put the yard panel at 45* and the desk was long gone before I bought it. Thanks for looking.
