"The leak of tens of thousands of Afghanistan war-related documents tells us more than the sum total of many official communiqués about the war. On balance, more disclosure is a good thing, but the leaking of raw military intelligence is a special case that requires a careful, rather than a cavalier, approach.

There is not enough information about the war, and much official information is misleading. In Canada, the federal government's quarterly reports contain a few updates based on its goals in Kandahar, but little else that informs. The government has already shown itself to be an unreliable source on issues relating to Afghan detainees.

The situation is now too dangerous for the most trustworthy chroniclers – journalists, UN personnel – to go outside NATO-protected areas.

So reliable, independent information is lacking. The circumstances in this war make such information even more necessary."

"The first phase was chilling, in part because the banter of the soldiers was so far beyond the boundaries of civilian discourse. “Just fuckin’, once you get on ’em, just open ’em up,” one of them said. The crew members of the Apache came upon about a dozen men ambling down a street, a block or so from American troops, and reported that five or six of the men were armed with AK-47s; as the Apache maneuvered into position to fire at them, the crew saw one of the Reuters journalists, who were mixed in among the other men, and mistook a long-lensed camera for an RPG. The Apaches fired on the men for twenty-five seconds, killing nearly all of them instantly."

"Instead, many eyes will now pore over this data from many different directions, looking for patterns and attempting to eliminate the noise, disinformation and fog of war.

Many will look to it to criticise and condemn the US presence in Afghanistan, but if those on the other side – those who support such military incursions – have any sense, they too will use it to understand better the war in which they find themselves and adapt their counsel to fit more accurately the facts on the ground.

That’s the benefit, usually, of an open society. We get to triangulate on the truth by gathering facts in the public space, then providing them to all sides to chew over. We use this against our own illusions and those of more closed societies who can only view the world through one narrow perspective.": www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2010/0730/1224275801...

"This is duplicitous only if you close your eyes to the Pakistani reality, which the Americans never did. There was ample evidence, as the WikiLeaks show, of covert ISI ties to the Taliban. The Americans knew they couldn't break those ties. They settled for what support Pakistan could give them while constantly pressing them harder and harder until genuine fears in Washington emerged that Pakistan could destabilize altogether. Since a stable Pakistan is more important to the United States than a victory in Afghanistan—which it wasn't going to get anyway—the United States released pressure and increased aid. If Pakistan collapsed, then India would be the sole regional power, not something the United States wants."

"It is possible that the publication of documents that provide actual evidence — rather than rumors — of the role of ISI personnel in Taliban planning, logistics, and strategy will give the West greater leverage in dealing with Islamabad and might force Pakistan’s political elite to confront the reality of the ISI’s secret activities. "One surprising consequence of the war in Iraq is the surrender of postmodernism to a victorious modernism. This has been largely overlooked in North America.

In reaction to the U.S. intervention in Iraq, Jacques Derrida, a famous postmodernist, signed on as co-author of an article drafted by the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, previously an opponent of his, in an unmistakable endorsement of modernist Enlightenment principles. Derrida, the apostle of deconstructionism, is now advocating some decidedly constructive and Eurocentric activism.

The article appeared simultaneously in two newspapers on May 31, in German in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as "After the War: The Rebirth of Europe," and in French in Libération, less triumphantly, as "A Plea for a Common Foreign Policy: The demonstrations of Feb. 15 against the war in Iraq designed a new European public space."

Other famous intellectuals joined in with supportive newspaper articles of their own: Umberto Eco (of The Name of the Rose) and Gianni Vattimo in Italy and an American philosopher, Richard Rorty. This provoked much discussion in Europe, but only a few comments so far in North America, the Boston Globe and the Village Voice being rare exceptions.

This week in Montreal, there was an anti-globalization riot in which windows were broken in protest against a World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting. But the Habermas-Derrida declaration praises the WTO and even the International Monetary Fund as part of Weltinnenpolitik: maddeningly hard to translate, but something like "global domestic policy" or "external internal policy."

Yet it is not much of a stretch to claim the young anti-globalists as disciples of postmodernism and Derrida, who has hitherto been a foe of "logocentrism" (putting reason at the centre), "phallologocentrism" (reason is an erect male organ and, as such, damnably central) and Eurocentrism (the old, old West is the homeland of all of the above).

Derrida added a note to the article, observing most people would recognize Habermas's style and thinking in the piece, and that he hadn't had time to write a separate piece. But notwithstanding his "past confrontations" with Habermas (Derrida had objected to being called a "Judaistic mystic," for one thing), he agreed with the article he had signed, which calls for new European responsibilities "beyond all Eurocentrism" and the strengthening of international law and international institutions."

"In early 2003, both Habermas and Derrida were very active in opposing the coming Iraq War, and called for in a manifesto that later became the book Old Europe, New Europe, Core Europe for a tighter union of the states of the European Union in order to provide a power capable of opposing American foreign policy. Derrida wrote a foreword expressing his unqualified subscription to Habermas's declaration of February 2003, "February 15, or, What Binds Europeans Together: Plea for a Common Foreign Policy, Beginning in Core Europe,” in Old Europe, New Europe, Core Europe which was a reaction to the Bush administration demands upon European nations for support for the coming Iraq War[25]. Habermas has offered further context for this declaration in an interview."

Habermas: ”The asymmetry between the concentrated destructive power of the electronically controlled clusters of elegant and versatile missiles in the air and the archaic ferocity of the swarms of bearded warriors outfitted with Kalashnikovs on the ground remains a morally obscene sight

I consider Bush' s decision to call for a "war against terrorism" a serious mistake, both normatively and pragmatically. Normatively, he is elevating these criminals to the status of war enemies; and pragmatically, one cannot lead a war against a "network" if the term "war" is to retain any definite meaning.”

Derrida: “To say it all too quickly and in passing, to amplify and clarify just a bit what I said earlier about an absolute threat whose origin is anonymous and not related to any state, such "terrorist" attacks already no longer need planes, bombs, or kamikazes: it is enough to infiltrate a strategically important computer system and introduce a virus or some other disruptive element to paralyze the economic, military, and political resources of an entire country or continent. And this can be attempted from just about anywhere on earth, at very little expense and with minimal means. The relationship between earth, terra territory, and terror has changed, and it is necessary to know that this is because of knowledge, that is, because of technoscience.

It is technoscience that blurs the distinction between war and terrorism. In this regard, when compared to the possibilities for destruction and chaotic disorder that are in reserve, for the future, in the computerized networks of the world, "September 11" is still part of the archaic theater of violence aimed at striking the imagination. One will be able to do even worse tomorrow, invisibly, in silence, more quickly and without any bloodshed, by attacking the computer and informational networks on which the entire life (social, economic, military, and so on) of a "great nation," of the greatest power on earth, depends.”

Lou Reed The Blue Mask

Lyrics:

They tied his arms behind

his back to teach him how to

swim They put

blood in his coffee and milk

in his gin They stood over the

soldier in

the midst of the squalor

There was war in his body and

it caused his

brain to holler

Make the sacrifice

mutilate my face

If you need someone to kill

I'm a man without a will

Wash the razor in the rain

Let me luxuriate in pain

Please don't set me free

Death means a lot to me

The pain was lean and it made

him scream he knew he was alive

They put a

pin through the nipples on his chest

He thought he was a saint

I've made love to my mother,

killed my father and my brother

What am I

to do

When a sin goes too far, it's

like a runaway car It cannot

be controlled

Spit upon his face and scream

There's no Oedipus today

This is no play you're thinking you

are in What will you say

Take the blue mask down from my face and

look me in the eye I get a

thrill from punishment

I've always been that way

I loathe and despise repentance

You are permanently stained

Your weakness buys indifference

and indiscretion in the streets

Dirty's what you are and clean is what

you're not You deserve to be

soundly beat

Make the sacrifice

Take it all the way

There's no won't high enough

To stop this desperate day

Don't take death away

Cut the finger at the joint

Cut the stallion at his mount

And stuff it in his mouth

---

Corporate agriculture on the experimental farm, your tax dollars at work. Ironically, note the much greener field beyond the sprayed one. Maybe the dandelions know something we don't (they've been here 350 million years longer, and will probably out-survive our shenanigans). Nearby, the relatively tiny organic gardens remain unfunded and largely ignored by the government. Agriculture Canada has been called an "owned" department, implying that their decisions are directed, one way or another, by corporate interests, lobbying and disinformation. Controlling and selling monoculture and its related chemicals is highly profitable, and so gives industry a big voice. Whither public interest, healthy food and sustainability?

Corporate agriculture: where squeaking out an extra percentage point of short-term profitability is valued above all other considerations, such as fossil fuel dependency, soil sustainability, disaster resiliency, biodiversity, small business, family farms, climate change, healthy rural communities, local food, seed saving. It's all about maximizing corporate profit through the centralization and control of food production. Food as a factory product. Nature in a box. I look forward to the day when Monsanto and the like need to hold bake sales to raise funds — while farmers and gardeners are thriving in an honest, democratic economy. Canada certainly isn't there yet.

COVID-19 is still a global health emergency, WHO says

The World Health Organization said Wednesday that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), almost three years after it was first recognized as such back in January 2020.

The determination was made last week at a meeting by the Emergency Committee on COVID-19, according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO.

"The committee emphasized the need to strengthen surveillance and expand access to tests, treatments and vaccines for those most at risk," Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a briefing. "And for all countries to update their national preparedness and response plans."

The committee acknowledged that the pandemic has gotten better, but believes the world must remain vigilant as the COVID-19 virus has proven unpredictable.

"While the global situation has obviously improved since the pandemic began, the virus continues to change, and there remain many risks and uncertainties," the director-general said. "This pandemic has surprised us before, and very well could again."

The WHO defines a PHEIC as "an extraordinary event" that could harm other countries through the spread of a disease. A PHEIC could require a coordinated international response effort, and is often "serious, sudden, unusual or unexpected."

Last week, meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden's chief chief medical adviser, described the spread of the new COVID variant known as BQ.1 as "pretty troublesome." The strain, and a descendant called BQ.1.1, have already grown to make up more than 10% of new infections across the U.S.

Whites now more likely to die from covid than Blacks: Why the pandemic shifted

OMERVILLE, Tenn. — Skill Wilson had amassed more than three decades of knowledge as a paramedic, first in Memphis and then in Fayette County. Two places that felt like night and day.

With only five ambulances in the county and the nearest hospital as much as 45 minutes away, Skill relished the clinical know-how necessary to work in a rural setting. Doing things like sedating patients to insert tubes into their airways.

But when it came to covid-19, despite more than 1 million deaths nationwide, Skill and his family felt their small town on the central-eastern side of Fayette County, with its fields of grazing cattle and rows of cotton and fewer than 200 covid deaths since the start of the pandemic, was a cocoon against the raging health emergency.

“It was a lot easier to stay away from others,” his widow, Hollie Wilson, said of the largely White and predominantly conservative county of about 42,000 residents. “Less people. Less chance of exposure.”

Covid seemed like other people’s problems — until it wasn’t.

The imbalance in death rates among the nation’s racial and ethnic groups has been a defining part of the pandemic since the start. To see the pattern, The Washington Post analyzed every death during more than two years of the pandemic. Early in the crisis, the differing covid threat was evident in places such as Memphis and Fayette County. Deaths were concentrated in dense urban areas, where Black people died at several times the rate of White people.

“I don’t want to say that we weren’t worried about it, but we weren’t,” said Hollie, who described her 59-year-old husband as someone who “never took a pill.” After a while, “you kind of slack off on some things,” she said.

Over time, the gap in deaths widened and narrowed but never disappeared — until mid-October 2021, when the nation’s pattern of covid mortality changed, with the rate of death among White Americans sometimes eclipsing other groups.

A Post analysis of covid death data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from April 2020 through this summer found the racial disparity vanished at the end of last year, becoming roughly equal. And at times during that same period, the overall age-adjusted death rate for White people slightly surpassed that of Black and Latino people.

The nature of the virus makes the elderly and people with underlying health conditions — including hypertension, diabetes and obesity, all of which beset Black people at higher rates and earlier in life than White people — particularly vulnerable to severe illness and death.

That wasn’t Skill.

The virus also attacks unvaccinated adults — who polls show are more likely to be Republicans — with a ferocity that puts them at a much higher risk of infection and death.

That was Skill.

He joined the choir of critics opposing vaccination requirements, his rants in front of the television eventually wearing on Hollie, who, even if she agreed, grew tired of listening and declared their home “covid-talk free.”

So, she said, Skill commiserated with like-minded people in Facebook groups and on Parler and Rumble, the largely unmoderated social networking platforms popular with conservatives.

“We’re Republicans, and 100 percent believe that it’s each individual’s choice — their freedom” when it comes to getting a coronavirus shot, Hollie said in January. “We decided to err on the side of not doing it and accept the consequences. And now, here we are in the middle of planning the funeral.”

Capt. Julian Greaves Wilson Jr., known to everybody as Skill, died of covid Jan. 23, a month after becoming infected with the coronavirus. He fell ill not long after transporting a covid patient to the hospital. At the time he died, infection rates in Fayette County had soared to 40.5 percent among people taking coronavirus tests.

‘A different calculus’

When the coronavirus appeared in the United States, it did what airborne viruses do — latched onto cells in people’s respiratory tract, evaded innate immune responses and multiplied. The pathogen, free of politics or ideology, had a diverse reservoir of hosts and found fertile pathways for growth in the inequalities born from centuries of racial animus and class resentments.

Unequal exposure, unequal spread, unequal vulnerability and unequal treatment concentrated harm in communities that needed protection the most yet had the least. Cumulatively, Black, Latino and Native American people are 60 percent more likely to die of covid.

But as the pandemic progressed, the damage done by the virus broadened, and the toxicity of modern-day politics came to the fore.

The Post analysis revealed the changing pattern in covid deaths. At the start of the pandemic, Black people were more than three times as likely to die of covid as their White peers. But as 2020 progressed, the death rates narrowed — but not because fewer Black people were dying. White people began dying at increasingly unimaginable numbers, too, the Post analysis found.

In summer 2021, the nation saw some of the pandemic’s lowest death rates, as vaccines, shoring up the body’s immune response, became widely available.

Then came the delta variant. The virus mutated, able to spread among the vaccinated. As it did, an erosion of trust in government and in medicine — in any institution, really — slowed vaccination rates, stymieing the protection afforded by vaccines against severe illness and death.

After delta’s peak in September 2021, the racial differences in covid deaths started eroding. The Post analysis found that Black deaths declined, while White deaths never eased, increasing slowly but steadily, until the mortality gap flipped. From the end of October through the end of December, White people died at a higher rate than Black people did, The Post found.

That remained true except for a stretch in winter 2021-2022, when the omicron variant rampaged. The Black death rate jumped above White people’s when the spike in cases and deaths overwhelmed providers in the Northeast, resulting in a bottleneck of testing and treatment.

When the surge subsided, the Black death rate once again dropped below the White rate.

“Usually, when we say a health disparity is disappearing, what we mean is that … the worse-off group is getting better,” said Tasleem Padamsee, an assistant professor at Ohio State University who researched vaccine use and was a member of the Ohio Department of Health’s work group on health equity. “We don’t usually mean that the group that had a systematic advantage got worse.”

That’s exactly what happened as the White death rate surpassed that for Black people, even though Black Americans routinely confront stress so corrosive it causes them to age quicker, become sicker and die younger.

The shift in covid death rates “has vastly different implications for public health interventions,” said Nancy Krieger, professor of social epidemiology at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Officials must figure out how to connect with “communities who are ideologically opposed to the vaccine” while contending with “the cumulative impact of injustice” on communities of color.

“Think about the fact that everyone who is age 57 and older in this country was born when Jim Crow was legal,” she said. “What that did was intersect with covid-19, meaning that embodied history is part of this pandemic, too.”

So what contributed to the recent variation in death rates? And why?

The easy explanation is that it reflects the choices of Republicans not to be vaccinated, but the reasons go deeper. The Post interviewed historians and researchers who study the effects of White racial politics and social inequality on health, spoke with relatives and friends of those lost to covid, and compiled data from federal databases and academic studies.

What emerged is a story about how long-standing issues of race and class interacted with the physical and psychological toll of mass illness and death, unprecedented social upheaval, public policies — and public opinion.

Resilience gave way to fatigue. Holes left by rural hospital closures deepened. Medical mistrust and misinformation raged. Skeptics touted debunked alternatives over proven treatments and prevention. Mask use became a victim of social stigma.

Many Republicans decided they would rather roll the dice with their health than follow public health guidance — even when provided by President Donald Trump, who was booed after saying he had been vaccinated and boosted.

Researchers at Ohio State found Black and White people were about equally reluctant to get the coronavirus vaccine when it first became available, but Black people overcame that hesitancy faster. They came to the realization sooner that vaccines were necessary to protect themselves and their communities, Padamsee said.

As public health efforts to contain the virus were curtailed, the pool of those most at risk of becoming casualties widened. The No. 1 cause of death for 45-to-54-year-olds in 2021 was covid, according to federal researchers.

“I still remember when I was doing the mayor’s press conferences a few months into this, and I made note of the fact that most of those people who had died look like me,” said James E.K. Hildreth, president and CEO of Meharry Medical College, one of the nation’s oldest and largest private, historically Black academic health sciences center, in Nashville. Hildreth played a central role in the city’s pandemic response.

“I wondered aloud if it were reversed, would the whole nation not be more galvanized to fight this thing?” recalled Hildreth, an immunologist and member of an expert panel that advises the Food and Drug Administration on vaccines, including coronavirus shots.

After it became clear that communities of color were being disproportionately affected, racial equity started to become the parlance of the pandemic, in words and deeds. As it did, vaccine access and acceptance within communities of color grew — and so did the belief among some White conservatives, who form the core of the Republican base, that vaccine requirements and mask mandates infringe on personal liberties.

“Getting to make this decision for themselves has primacy over what the vaccine could do for them,” said Lisa R. Pruitt, a law professor at the University of California at Davis who is an expert in social inequality and the urban-rural divide. “They’re making a different calculus.”

It’s a calculation informed by the lore around self-sufficiency, she said, a fatalistic acceptance that hardships happen in life and a sense of defiance that has come to define the modern conservative movement’s antipathy toward bureaucrats and technocrats.

“I didn’t think that that polarization would transfer over to a pandemic,” Pruitt said.

It did.

A lifesaving vaccine and droplet-blocking masks became ideological Rorschach tests.

The impulse to frame the eradication of an infectious disease as a matter of personal choice cost the lives of some who, despite taking the coronavirus seriously, were surrounded by enough people that the virus found fertile terrain to sow misery. That’s what happened in northern Illinois, where a father watched his 40-year-old son succumb to covid-19.

For Robert Boam, the increase in White deaths is politics brought to bear on the body of his son, though he’s reluctant “to get into the politics of it all, but it all goes back to that.”

Brian Boam was a PE teacher at an elementary school in suburban Chicago. On Christmas Eve, the entire family gathered at the elder Boam’s home in an Illinois town where the first Lincoln-Douglas debate was held. Brian Boam was there with his 10-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son.

Robert Boam said his son had survived covid the year before, so “we got on his butt to get that booster shot when he was here for Christmas.” And he did — but got sick again, the 73-year-old said. “Being vaccinated, and all that, and getting covid again kind of bummed him out.”

Just after the new year, Brian Boam, who was hypertensive, went to a hospital feverish and vomiting. It took 10 hours to be seen and even longer for a bed to become available. As he waited, he sent what would be his last text message to his parents. Thanks for all you do. I love you.

He went into cardiac arrest in the emergency room and was transferred to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, one of the nation’s top academic hospitals. There, his family hoped he would be healed, but his organs began to fail. He died Jan. 8.

“The thing that gets me is the people who still don’t believe it’s serious or even real, but when they get sick, they run to the hospital,” Robert Boam said. “You’re taking away from heart attack patients and stroke patients.”

The pandemic, he said, “should’ve been taken seriously from the very beginning, and it wasn’t. It was denied. It was downplayed. And it all goes back to one person, as far as I’m concerned.”

Asked who that was, Boam would say only: “I’ll give you three guesses. The first two don’t count.”

Stress, and its burden

While almost three years of chaotic public health crises have left Americans of all races uncertain about the future, they have also revealed the enduring nature of racial and class politics — and the cost they exact, including for White Americans.

Those triggers are layered upon each other, stoking stress, said Derek M. Griffith, who co-leads the Racial Justice Institute and directs the Center for Men’s Health Equity at Georgetown University.

“Whether it’s ‘I can’t pay my rent and mortgage as easily as I used to,’ or ‘I want to show I’m not worried about covid,’ your body doesn’t care where the stress is coming from. It’s just experiencing stress,” he said. “Then add to that how people are coping with the stress.”

When it comes to racism, most people think of something that occurs between individuals. But it’s as much about who has access to power, wealth and rights as it is about insults, suspicion and disrespect. Prejudice and discrimination, even if unconscious, can be deadly — and not just for the intended targets.

A growing body of research, outlined in the book “Caste,” by Isabel Wilkerson, shows that even the most anodyne of social exchanges with people of different races, such as glancing at faded yearbook photos, can raise White people’s blood pressure and cortisol levels.

Stress is a hard-wired physiological response, triggered at the first sign of danger. The brain sounds an alarm, setting off a torrent of neurological and hormonal signals. Persistent surges of cortisol and other stress hormones can wear down the body, increasing the risk of stroke, diabetes, heart attack or premature death by damaging blood vessels and arteries. Overexposure to stress can weaken the immune response and can make it harder to develop antibodies after being vaccinated against infectious diseases.

Sometimes, the harm is not just biological but also behavioral.

Researchers at the University of Georgia found that White people who assumed the pandemic had a disparate effect on communities of color — or were told that it did — had less fear of being infected with the coronavirus, were less likely to express empathy toward vulnerable populations and were less supportive of safety measures, according to an article in Social Science & Medicine.

Perhaps, the report concludes, explaining covid’s unequal burden as part of an enduring legacy of inequality “signaled these disparities were not just transitory epidemiological trends, which could potentially shift and disproportionately impact White people in the future.”

Translation: Racial health disparities are part of the status quo.

And because of that, government efforts to bring a public health threat to heel are seen by some White Americans as infringing on their rights, researchers said.

“This is reflective of politics that go back to the 19th-century anxieties about federal overreach,” said Ayah Nuriddin, a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University who studies the history of medicine.

Us vs. them

Questions about the government’s role in ensuring the public’s health and well-being hang heavy with historical inflections in states such as Tennessee, once home to the president who argued that Reconstruction-era legislation to help and protect newly freed enslaved people violated states’ rights.

And so in many ways, the roots of the consternation over recent pandemic-control measures began sprouting a century and a half earlier.

But that hasn’t stopped people such as Civil Miller-Watkins from wondering why those roots are choking so many now.

The former Fayette County school board member, who possesses an abiding belief in the power of the common good, said she finds the mind-set “I know what’s good for me, and if it’s harmful for you, you’re going to have to deal with it” worrisome amid a pandemic.

“Living in a rural county is not for the faint of heart, especially as a Black person,” the 56-year-old said. Still, she can’t help but wonder, “if I’m the same neighbor you give sugar to, and you know I have an 84-year-old in my house and a little-bitty baby at home, why wouldn’t you wear a mask around me?”

It’s a question that dogged her over Christmas when two of her grandchildren were infected with the coronavirus days before they were scheduled to be vaccinated.

“We put it on Republicans and politics,” she said, “but I think we should dig deeper.”

That’s what Jonathan M. Metzl, director of Vanderbilt University’s Department of Medicine, Health, and Society, did for six years while researching his book “Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland.”

Published in 2019, it is a book about the politicization of public health and mistrust of medical institutions. It is a story about how communal values take a back seat to individuality. It’s an exploration of disinformation and how the fear of improving the lives of some means worsening the lives of others.

“I didn’t know it at the time, but I was writing a prehistory of the pandemic,” Metzl said in an interview. “You’re seeing a kind of dying-of-Whiteness phenomenon in the covid data that’s very similar to what I saw in my data.”

Metzl and Griffith, a Vanderbilt professor at the time, conducted focus groups on the Affordable Care Act throughout middle Tennessee including White and Black men who were 20 to 60 years old. Some were small-business owners and security guards. Others were factory workers and retirees.

The divergent medical experiences of Black and White patients permeated Metzl’s focus groups, particularly when the conversation veered toward the politics of health and government’s role in promoting well-being.

“Black men described precisely the same medical and economic stressors as did White men and detailed the same struggles to stay healthy,” Metzl wrote. “But Black men consistently differed from White men in how they conceived of government intervention and group identity. Whereas White men jumped unthinkingly to assumptions about ‘them,’ Black men frequently answered questions about health and health systems through the language of ‘us.’ ”

Tennessee has yet to expand Medicaid under the ACA, a decision fueling rural hospital closures at a rate that eclipses nearly every other state because there isn’t enough money to keep the doors open. Not only would expanding Medicaid have saved hospitals, Metzl wrote, it would have saved thousands of lives — White and Black.

Metzl said watching the pandemic unfold felt like a flashback to past battles over federal health-care reform. Messaging that leaned into quantitative data about masks and vaccines sounded eerily similar to the mistakes made, “at least for this part of the country,” with the ACA, he said.

“The minute public health infrastructure started to talk about the statistical public health benefits of the mask” and not how everyone needed to be on the same page to stay safe, Metzl said, “I just knew that it was going to open a door for the same kind of anti-ACA stuff, which is ‘the government’s telling you what to do.’ ”

As Metzl conducted research for his book in 2016, a 41-year-old uninsured Tennessean named Trevor who was jaundiced and in liver failure told him “I would rather die” than sign up for the ACA. When asked why, Trevor, who was identified by first name only, said: “We don’t need any more government in our lives. And in any case, no way I want my tax dollars paying for Mexicans or welfare queens.”

Now during the pandemic, there are people like 39-year-old Chad Carswell of North Carolina whose kidneys functioned recently at just 3 percent. He was denied a new kidney in January after refusing to take a coronavirus vaccine as required for the transplant at the time, saying: “I was born free. I’ll die free.”

Much like protests to “repeal and replace” the ACA, Metzl said rejecting public health measures is about dogma more so than a mistrust of the science of vaccines or masks.

“We’ve oversimplified this with morality tales about the vaccine is good, and anti-vaxxers are bad, and they’re automatically racist,” Metzl said. “Being anti-vaccine or anti-mask is part of an ideology. When people get more desperate, they get more ideological.”

A funeral, a cause

Skill Wilson’s funeral in January was a public testimony to the complexity of people. The room was draped in the unmistakable symbols of patriotism, a steely declaration that this was someone who believed in service and sacrifice for country and community. Firefighters sat in row upon row, their dress uniforms — crisp white shirts and formal blue blazers — marking the solemn occasion. Maskless faces abounded.

His urn, embossed with the firefighters’ “thin red line” flag — a black-and-white U.S. flag with a single red stripe across it — sat between two firemen’s helmets. It is a flag that some have come to see as a political statement, while others view it as a way to honor fallen firefighters. Behind them, a burial flag folded into a crisp triangle.

A succession of eulogies told the story of a man who could make you drive past your highway exit in a fit of rage, who harassed the fire chief until every station in the county had a flagpole that displayed the Stars and Stripes, who loved sneaking up behind his children and yelling, “Boo!”

Husband. Father. Friend.

Sarcastic. Goofy. Joker.

“Skill was one of the constants in my life. For people who didn’t really know our friendship, they’d think we hated each other,” said Debbie Patterson, a division chief with Emergency Medical Services at the Memphis Fire Department. “We were constantly going to battle and name-calling. Some of them are dork, idiot, slacker. But our true term of endearment for each other, for years, has been ‘b----es.’ ”

He would call at 6 a.m., even when she wasn’t on shift, to “wake me up and tell me I was a slacker for being on vacation,” she said, laughing.

During those phone calls, they figured out the day’s menu for lunch, bragged about their children and personal lives, and solved the fire department’s problems “as firefighters do.”

“Of course, we rarely saw eye to eye on anything,” she said. “The best part about Skill was he could laugh at himself for being a dumb ass, too.”

It was a scene of mourning and hope, of bravado and brokenness. There was as much laughter as sorrow, wounds healed by scripture and classic ’70s rock. It was a paragon of Southern, White masculinity.

Last to the lectern was Hollie’s uncle, who looked out at the sea of uniforms, at the men and women in government service, and assured them that the uncomfortable truths he said he was about to share were not directed at anybody in the room.

Skill, he said, was a warrior who put his faith in the system that “betrayed him and left him laying on this battlefield” during a “war he was willing to fight.”

“How many more good men and women — fathers, brothers, mothers and sisters — will be sacrificed on the altar of money before we all stand up and say this is enough?” he continued, adding that “Skill and I were on the same page. We had the same worldview.”

He never specified the war, though he said it was one we’re all fighting “no matter what lines they try to draw between us.” Faith, he said, lies with God and each other, “not in those who are solely motivated by profit.”

But it wasn’t about what he said. It was about what he left unsaid: the far-right extremist views that go beyond the bounds of traditional conservative politics and ideals of patriotism.

Online, he and the family have shared social media posts and, until recently, sold customized insulated plastic cups bearing the insignia of Three Percenters, a decentralized militant movement named after the myth that just 3 percent of the population fought the British in the American Revolution. It’s founded on the idea that armed “patriots” should protect Americans from the tyranny of big government, including gun laws, pandemic shutdowns and racial justice protests.

Later, outside in the parking lot while smoking a cigarette, Hollie’s uncle clarified that the battle is against covid and shared the popular — yet false — conspiracy that potentially lifesaving covid medications are being withheld by the health-care system. What he wouldn’t do was provide his name, saying he didn’t want “little black SUVs showing up at my house.”

Methodology

The Post applied the standard technique used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to calculate age-adjusted covid death rates by race using the CDC’s provisional covid death data that includes race, ethnicity, age and date of death. Under that procedure, The Post calculated death rates for age groups by dividing the number of deaths by the population in that age group. The Post then used a standardized age distribution to create an overall rate for each race-ethnicity group.

Age-adjusted rates are especially necessary for understanding covid deaths because the majority of people killed by covid are age 75 or older, even though that group represents less than 9 percent of the U.S. population. Additionally, more than 90 percent of covid deaths are in people age 50 and older.

The covid death age pattern is important in reviewing deaths by race because White people are disproportionately older. More than 40 percent of White people are age 50 or older, but less than 30 percent of Black people are in those older age groups. Hispanics are even younger, with less than 25 percent age 50 or older.

The age-adjusted rates offset that difference in age distribution to compare deaths as if the races or ethnic groups had the same age distribution.

Whites, Blacks, Asians, American Indians and Alaskan Natives are non-Hispanic. Hispanics are of any race, so the racial groups and the Hispanic groups do not overlap.

For maps, The Post calculated age-adjusted covid death rates for each race in each state over the course of the pandemic using provisional covid death data by state.

As a member of NATO, Estonia, like Montenegro, is a beneficiary of the collective defense provisions of Article V of the Washington Treaty, the organic document that established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. They provide that an attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all Allies.

Russia is currently carrying out disinformation campaigns in Estonia aimed at ethnic Russians there.

www.dw.com/en/baltics-battle-russia-in-online-disinformat...

========================================================

Here's how Estonia extricated itself from the USSR:

In the late 1970s, Estonian society grew increasingly concerned about the threat of cultural Russification to the Estonian language and national identity.

By 1981, Russian was taught in the first grade of Estonian-language schools and was also introduced into Estonian pre-school teaching.

Soviet authorities began to lure in Finnish tourists and the much needed foreign exchange they could bring.

The Soviet travel agency Inturist contracted Finnish construction company Repo to build Hotel Viru in downtown Tallinn. [Our tour guide said the building was heavily bugged.]

Estonians saw very different construction equipment, methods and work morale. An improved ferry MS Georg Ots between Tallinn and Helsinki came into operation. Estonia gained Western currency, but on the other hand Western thoughts and customs began to infiltrate Soviet Estonia.

By the beginning of the Gorbachev era, concern over the cultural survival of the Estonian people had reached a critical point.

The ECP [Estonian Communist Party] remained stable in the early perestroika years but waned in the late 1980s.

Other political movements, groupings and parties moved to fill the power vacuum.

The first and most important was the Estonian Popular Front, established in April 1988 with its own platform, leadership and broad constituency.

The Greens and the dissident-led Estonian National Independence Party soon followed. By 1989 the political spectrum had widened, and new parties were formed and re-formed almost daily.

The republic's Supreme Soviet transformed into an authentic regional lawmaking body.

This relatively conservative legislature passed an early declaration of sovereignty (November 16, 1988); a law on economic independence (May 1989) confirmed by the U.S.S.R. Supreme Soviet that November; a language law making Estonian the official language (January 1989); and local and republic election laws stipulating residency requirements for voting and candidacy (August, November 1989).

Although the majority of Estonia's large Russian-speaking diaspora of Soviet-era immigrants did not support full independence, they were divided in their goals for the republic.

In March 1990 some 18% of Russian speakers supported the idea of a fully independent Estonia, up from 7% the previous autumn, and by early 1990 only a small minority of ethnic Estonians were opposed to full independence.

The first freely elected parliament during the Soviet era in Estonia had passed Estonian Sovereignty Declaration on November 16, 1988, independence resolutions on May 8, 1990, and renamed the Estonian SSR the Republic of Estonia.

On August 20, 1991 the Estonian parliament issued a Declaration of Independence from the Soviet Union.

On September 6, 1991, Supreme Soviet of the USSR recognized the independence of Estonia, immediately followed by the international recognitions of the Republic of Estonia.

On February 23, 1989 the flag of the Estonian SSR was lowered on Pikk Hermann, and replaced with the blue-black-white flag of Estonia on February 24, 1989.

In 1992, Heinrich Mark, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia in Exile, presented his credentials to the newly elected President of Estonia Lennart Meri.

The last Russian troops withdrew from Estonia in August 1994.

The Russian Federation officially ended its military presence in Estonia after it relinquished control of the nuclear reactor facilities in Paldiski in September 1995. Estonia joined the European Union and NATO in 2004.

The events surrounding the September 19 earthquake expose the Mexican state's strategy to manage the tragedy on its behalf, to hide its negligence, to profit from it and to seize the opportunity that has come to swell the pockets of those who have. This is what turns a natural disaster into a tragedy.

----

The omission of the State and the administration of the tragedy | By Tejiendo Revolutionary Organization | September 25, 2017

----

The protagonist of the tragedy is negligence, not trembling; Evidence of this is that it was presented as unexpected, although it is well known that it occurred in seismic zone; evidence is more than thirty years in which there was no progress in prevention: failed reviews after the earthquake of September 7 did not report that there were poorly constructed or structurally damaged schools; evidence is that building regulations are dead letter, murdered by the corruption of various levels of government and real estate business.

The urgency of the tragedy called for immediate solidarity and the urgent pressure of time concealed a fundamental fact: the State does have the material and human resources to face the catastrophe; has heavy machinery, equipment and specialized personnel, communication infrastructure, money, etc., if not occupied was because deicide not to do it, not because it was exceeded.

The Mexican state has high-tech resources to spy on us, for example, but did not put them at the service of rescuers to locate life inside the rubble. Nor was the state structure used to provide reliable and timely information that could save lives and channel aid. Moreover, not even the international rescuers were well exploited, although there were.

The participation of the State in the most affected areas was under the logic of containing and controlling. This was how their military officers, the militia and the navy acted, by introducing themselves with high-caliber weapons to establish security perimeters, which not only hindered the prompt rescue of human lives, but also sought to restrain the organization of the people. It is important to mention that there were elements of the army and police guarding the transnational tents of alleged predatory attempts. It is not difficult to conclude that his plan was to wash the face to the army, whose presence was more evident in those points that mediatically were more exploitable. All this under a logic of war and sweep quickly with the rubble.

The state allowed and encouraged that the population be asked to spend their salary in individual stores, which later sought to manage clientele and welfare, while the taxes paid by the people went to the trust "Fuerza México" trust that will channel the public and private resources generating a capital accumulation not negligible for those who administer it: large companies; those that shone by their absence when the general call for solidarity was made and now ask for donations as if they were the victims of the tragedy.

For the state and the great capitalists it represents, the territory of the tragedy - Oaxaca, Guerrero, Tlaxcala, Morelos, Puebla, Mexico City - is seen as a space to generate profits, investing and speculating with the lives of people.

The only thing that can stop them is the organization of those affected by the earthquake, the organization of the people of solidarity who overflowed the streets and came safe that their help was indispensable, because we knew that the government would do nothing.

The threefold purpose of the state strategy was first, to resolve the situation as we could and thus channel social energy, second, to appear side by side with people to wash their image and, thirdly, to increase the sales of large companies.

If there is something learned by those who insist on dominating us, it is that below we always organize against him, so it happened with the earthquake of 1985, this is what happens now. That's what they fear from above and what they try to contain at any cost. The chaos that they have fomented in the form of institutional vacuum, disinformation, tragedy and death has the first objective that: to prevent the organization. After many years attacking the multiple forms of popular and social organization have left an isolated, divided, individualized society; nevertheless, this society now tries to reestablish the bonds, we seek to recognize ourselves as companions of the same problems.

Along with the disorganization there is a second objective of the State, to channel our indignation and our solidarity. Let the "civil society" have to solve the urgent and vital of the tragedy in order to prevent denouncing it; with these forms the State wears us, takes away our hopes and prevents us to organize to change it in the future. They want to leave us the burden of tragedy, they want us to be responsible for the failure. The bet from above is that we will not be able to organize but they are wrong, we, from below, we are going to prove it because we are going to live in it.

That's why we call solidarity organization and not just solidarity. We have to organize that this goes for long, we have to recognize ourselves with a common enemy: the capitalist system that defends and represents the State. But more importantly, we must recognize ourselves with a common cause: having a dignified, dignified life because we can organize ourselves to save lives without any authoritarian instance preventing us; dignified because we can participate and ensure that the reconstruction of affected housing is made with the necessary requirements. Let us denounce the omission, neglect and administration that the State makes of the tragedy. Let us encourage the self-organization of those below for the reconstruction of the country from the rubble.

Jewish Canadians Concerned about Suppression of Criticism of Israel

This statement was rejected by both the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail (as an op-ed). Please help this important statement get into broad circulation - pass it on to your networks (faculty, community, MPs, university presidents, unions etc.). You may also wish to write to the Star and Globe and express your dismay that they have chosen not to publish it.

Over 150 Jewish Canadians signed a statement expressing their concerns about the campaign to suppress criticism of Israel that is being carried on within Canada. The signatories include many prominent Canadians, including Ursula Franklin O.C., Anton Kuerti O.C., Naomi Klein, Dr. Gabor Mate, and professors Meyer Brownstone (recipient of Pearson Peace Medal), Natalie Zemon Davis, Michael Neumann, and Judy Rebick. *

The signatories are particularly concerned that unfounded accusations of anti-Semitism deflect attention from Israel’s accountability for what many have called war crimes in Gaza. They state that B’nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress have led campaigns to silence criticism of Israel on university campuses, in labor unions and in other groups. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff unquestioningly echo the views of these particular Jewish organizations.

They strongly state that they are against all expressions of racism. While firmly committed to resisting any form of prejudice against Jewish people, their statement explicitly states that these spurious allegations of anti-Semitism bring the anti-Communist terror of the 1950s vividly to mind.

The statement underlines the immeasurable suffering and injustice to the Palestinian people due to the severe poverty, daily humiliations, and military invasions inflicted by the State of Israel.

We are Jewish Canadians concerned about all expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, and social injustice. We believe that the Holocaust legacy "Never again" means never again for all peoples. It is a tragic turn of history that the State of Israel, with its ideals of democracy and its dream of being a safe haven for Jewish people, causes immeasurable suffering and injustice to the Palestinian people.

We are appalled by recent attempts of prominent Jewish organizations and leading Canadian politicians to silence protest against the State of Israel. We are alarmed by the escalation of fear tactics. Charges that those organizing Israel Apartheid Week or supporting an academic boycott of Israel are anti-Semites promoting hatred bring the anti-Communist terror of the 1950s vividly to mind. We believe this serves to deflect attention from Israel’s flagrant violations of international humanitarian law.

B’nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress have pressured university presidents and administrations to silence debate and discussion specifically regarding Palestine/Israel. In a full-page ad in a national newspaper, B’nai Brith urged donors to withhold funds from universities because "anti-Semitic hate fests" were being allowed on campuses. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff have echoed these arguments. While university administrators have resisted demands to shut down Israel Apartheid week, some Ontario university presidents have bowed to this disinformation campaign by suspending and fining students, confiscating posters, and infringing on free speech.

We do not believe that Israel acts in self-defense. Israel is the largest recipient of US foreign aid, receiving $3 million/day. It has the fourth strongest army in the world. Before the invasion of Gaza on 27 December 2008, Israel’s siege had already created a humanitarian catastrophe there,

with severe impoverishment, malnutrition, and destroyed infrastructure. It is crucial that forums for discussion of Israel’s accountability to the international community for what many have called war crimes be allowed to proceed unrestricted by specious claims of anti-Semitism.

We recognize that anti-Semitism is a reality in Canada as elsewhere, and we are fully committed to resisting any act of hatred against Jews. At the same time, we condemn false charges of anti-Semitism against student organizations, unions, and other groups and people exercising their

democratic right to freedom of speech and association regarding legitimate criticism of the State of Israel.

The background in this image is from a photo in the public domain from the USCapitol's Flickr photostream.

Tengu were menacing ninja that dressed up as demonic crows in order to spread fear amongst their enemies. There is still an existing mythology about them in modern Japan, except it was really the work of disinformation and psychological warfare practiced by Shinobi (ninja clan) agents. This guy hasn't got on his crow garb, but was apparently one them guys who did it (Mihiyona).

He's assumed a form of ichimunji kamae (Taijutsu defensive posture).

(Read a fair amount about these guys, hence the over explanation...)

I did this a while back (2006), only recently re discovered it.

The guy & his armor are done in black Bic ballpoint. His clothing is a print done directly onto the paper (from a regular inkjet printer), the scheme is from a Tibetan pattern.

And the list is growing..

A new study reveals that arson attacks on Canadian churches have more than doubled since 2021, with most cases linked to public reaction over reports of unmarked graves at former residential schools-not anti-religious sentiment. Despite nearly 100 churches damaged or destroyed, fewer than 4% of arsonists have been charged, leaving communities searching for answers and healing. www.facebook.com/100069681242082/posts/978055547860478/?_rdr

Although the vast majority of residents in cities across Canada like Halifax, Montreal, Victoria, Hamilton and Calgary had wanted to just simply retain their history by just leaving local statues and artifacts alone, unfortunately, these historical artifacts were shown total disrespect and disregard when either destroyed by lawless vigilante mobs while police stood by and watched, or else hastily torn down and then hidden away by order of local Mayors and council without public consultation or permission ? Many other historic Statues such as Queen Elizabeth ll, Queen Victoria, and even Captain Cook were also mutilated or torn down by lawless vigilante mobs ?

Report by journalist Craig McLean from the MTV music magazine “Blah Blah Blah”, about the live premiere of “National Grid” by Disinformation, at club Disobey, 10 October 1996 [1]. The first recorded version of “National Grid” was published on the Disinformation “Stargate” LP by the avant-garde record label Ash International (an imprint of Touch Records) in 1996 (see links). The first performance was programmed at the Disobey club night by Blast First - the record company responsible for publishing artists like Sonic Youth, Big Black, Dinosaur Jr., Suicide and Panasonic, alongside audio work by the artist Jeremy Deller, etc.

“Blah Blah Blah” was produced for MTV by Ray Gun Publishing, boasting a circulation of 120,000 copies [2] and featuring (in the case of this issue) interviews with Noel Gallagher, Robert Carlyle, Kate Winslett, Snoop Dogg and Steve Buscemi etc - giving some indication of the role that Disinformation played in influencing sonic arts practice, and in promoting what were at that time still highly controversial ideas, to audiences outside the (very small) world of the underground noise music micro-culture.

“National Grid” was also described in a full page feature covering the Disobey event, which was printed in London’s Evening Standard newspaper, with a readership of over 800,000 people. In terms of public access to information about relatively obscure technical concepts (eg - about VLF radio) and cultural trends, it’s also worth pointing out that these events took place in the earliest days of the internet - the domain name for Google wasn’t even registered until Sept 1997 - with the effect that many of the informative resources we now take for granted did at that time simply not exist.

“National Grid” was originally performed and recorded using the Upper and Lower Side-Band filter on a VLF converted shortwave radio, to musically tune interference from live mains electricity. Later versions use electric guitar pedals to tune direct-line outputs from mains electrical transformers… “Heavy Metal for the 23rd century”!

Disinformation founder Joe Banks met Craig McLean at the Disobey performance, with the photographer John Horsley visiting Joe in Tooting some time later, photographing different equipment - the photo features the Low Frequency Engineering L500 VLF receiver used to record the Disinformation track “Ghost Shells”, plus in fact the National Grid PLC team rugby shirt (donated by Tony Charles) which originally inspired the title “National Grid”.

The “small club” referred to in the article was the (moderately large) upstairs space at The Garage (music venue) at London’s Highbury Corner. Far from being a properly underground event, Blast First engaged a professional PR company to (successfully) promote Disobey to the media as an amazing “in crowd” night, attended by celebrities such as Jarvis Cocker. The event sold-out, queues formed in the street outside, and celebrity photographers from Esquire magazine and Harper's Bazaar etc were surprised to have their expectations confounded by performances from Disinformation and DJ Beekeeper (Bruce Gilbert from the band Wire).

Tejiendo Organización Revolucionaria

25 September 2017

During and immediately after World War II, three of the major combatants—Germany, Great Britain, and the United States—had experimented with aircraft and technologies that were nearly invisible to radar. The Gotha Go 229 and the Northrop YB-49, both flying wing designs, had surprised their designers by their much lower radar cross section compared to other contemporary aircraft.

Interest waned in the 1950s, however, after the cancellation of the YB-49 (the Go 229 had never progressed beyond prototype stage before Germany was overrun at the end of World War II), though Britain’s Avro Vulcan, which used a blended delta wing design, was also found to have a small radar cross section, despite being nearly the size of the B-52 Stratofortress.

The Vietnam experience reawakened interest in the idea of “stealthy” aircraft. The lethality of Soviet surface-to-air missiles had already led to the cancellation of the high-speed, high altitude XB-70 Valkyrie; the USAF’s decision to switch to low-level penetration bombing was seen by 1972 to be likewise a poor idea, as the overwhelming majority of the USAF’s catastrophic loss rate over North Vietnam was due to antiaircraft gunfire. The knowledge that the Soviet Union was fielding the MiG-25 Foxbat, at the time thought to be the best interceptor in the world, also complicated USAF planning. Eliminating manned bombers was a possibility, but the advantage of a manned bomber—which could be called back from the brink of nuclear war, whereas missiles could not—outweighed the disadvantages. The USAF at that point decided that, if it could not go above or below Soviet defenses, it would go through them, in an aircraft virtually invisible to radars.

Two companies were offered research contracts: Lockheed, with its experience in stealthy reconnaissance aircraft (such as the SR-71 Blackbird), and Northrop, which had built the original YB-49. The two companies took different approaches to stealth design, with Lockheed working on multifaceted surfaces in the Have Blue project, in what eventually would become the F-117 Nighthawk, while Northrop pursued smoother designs based on the old flying wing research. Northrop had made enough progress that, by 1977, when the Carter Administration was secretly briefed on the Advanced Technology Bomber (ATB) project, President Carter made the decision to cancel the B-1 bomber, though the ATB was still at least seven years off.

Northrop’s design for a flying wing won the ATB competition in October 1981—soon enough that Jack Northrop was shown the ATB’s design shortly before his death. The ATB was designated B-2, though its existence was still top secret—Carter had revealed the ATB project’s existence in 1980, but no one knew exactly what the shape of the bomber would be, and various disinformation programs were begun by the USAF, keeping all stealth development under the ominous moniker of Project Aurora. The B-2 was due for completion by 1986, but controversy over exactly what the bomber’s mission would be delayed it until November 1988, when it was rolled out for public display. It also gained the name Spirit.

The B-2 Spirit’s basic design surprised no one; once it was known that Northrop was involved in the design, many aviation researchers had correctly guessed it would be a flying wing, with the engines mounted above the fuselage to screen it from infrared detection from below. What was not known was the diagonal edges of the rear wing planform, or the ducted engine exhausts, which minimized its infrared signature from behind. All sections of the aircraft that would be open at any time, such as the landing gear and bomb bay doors, were sawtooth-edged to deflect radar reflections. The entire aircraft was coated in radar-reflective paint, and used composites in its design to both provide superb structural integrity and further increase its stealthiness. Nothing was carried that would emit electronic signatures; even the bombing radar would be switched on only on the final bomb run. So stealthy was the B-2 that, when it began to appear in airshows and be deployed overseas, it was usually accompanied by USAF fighters—not to provide escort, but to provide a radar return for civilian radar controllers who otherwise would not detect the aircraft at all.

The Spirit’s one drawback is its cost—easily one of the most expensive aircraft ever produced. Originally, 175 B-2s were to be built, but this was slashed by the first Bush administration to 75 aircraft, then, after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, to only 21. Besides being hideously expensive to produce, the B-2 was also expensive to maintain, requiring special training for its ground crews and climate-controlled hangars to preserve its radar-resistant coating. Despite this, however, the B-2 has proven itself to be very valuable. With a range exceeding that of the B-52, the B-2’s stealthiness allows it to operate at all altitudes with a minimal chance of detection, while it can carry a bombload equal to that of the B-1 Lancer.

The B-2A Spirit entered service in 1993 and first saw combat in the Kosovo War of 1999, delivering ordnance against Serbian targets with impunity. This was the first time that the USAF used GPS-guided bombs; the combination of the B-2’s guidance radar and GPS technology allowed the B-2 to attack up to 80 targets simultaneously, with each individual bomb being guided to its target. This made the B-2 a huge force multiplier. Spirits would launch first strikes in Afghanistan in 2001, Iraq in 2003, and Libya in 2011, flying missions from forward operating locations and its home base at Whiteman AFB, Missouri itself, with some missions exceeding 40 hours—an achievement even more impressive given that the B-2 has only a two-man crew. The B-2 is expected to serve for several more decades; its replacement will likely be unmanned. Only one aircraft has been lost, in a 2010 takeoff accident.

This isn't a "true" B-2A, but rather one of two testbeds built by Northrop for various testing--in this case, stress testing. It is identical to an operational B-2, except that it has no engines nor instrumentation. Stress testing required that hydraulic jacks be attached to the airframe, which simulates hundreds of flight hours; it was then stressed beyond the safe limits of operation to see how much the B-2 airframe can handle. In this case, the testbed exceeded Northrop's estimation before the wings snapped.

It was due to be scrapped, but since it would be a long time (if ever) that the National Museum of the USAF got an actual B-2A for display, Northrop complied with the museum's request for the testbed. It was put back together and restored by the NMUSAF as 82-1070 "Spirit of Ohio," an operational B-2A. The real 82-1070 was used to test temperature extremes on the Spirit: it was flown from the humid climes of Florida to the deep freeze of Alaska. When the testing was completed, the USAF donated the "Spirit of Ohio"'s nose gear door to be placed on the NMUSAF's example. Like all B-2s, the real "Spirit of Ohio" is assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing stationed at Whiteman AFB, Missouri.

This view shows the B-2's rather sinister forward profile, with the "Fire and Ice" artwork applied to 82-1070's nose gear door--since the B-2 uses special paint, the nose art actually would have interfered with the real 82-1070's paint scheme! I've seen a B-2 in flight, but this was the first time I had seen one up close, even if it isn't a "real" Spirit. A GBU-31 2000-pound satellite-guided bomb is on display to the B-2's right.

While Russia’s ongoing assault on historical truth is no longer a surprise, it was amazing to witness the extent to which the fake history that Russian propagandists have invented was given a platform at the “World Holocaust Forum” that took place at Yad Vashem in Israel in January 2020, just ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The forum, which was organised by Russian oligarch Viatcheslav “Moshe” Kantor (a Moscow-born fertiliser magnate and close ally of Vladimir Putin) in collaboration with Yad Vashem, and sponsored by Israel's president and foreign ministry, coincided with a hysterical barrage of disinformation and propaganda that Russia launched against Poland as the 75th anniversary of the allied victory over Nazi Germany was approaching.

stillunusual.tumblr.com/post/190432779246/the-kremlin-thi...

As well as allowing a despot like Putin to take the stage and spout a ton of hypocritical nonsense about “peace” and “tolerance”, the forum’s opening presentation showed a highly inaccurate map of Europe on the eve of the Second World War that included a fake border dividing Poland roughly into the areas assigned to Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the secret protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, which the two dictatorships signed on 23rd August 1939, prior to their mutual invasion of Poland.

Not only that, the map implied that Polish territory to the east of this fake border was a separate country called Belarus, which didn’t actually exist at the time. It’s true that the USSR did subsequently incorporate the northern part of eastern Poland into the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, but this only happened after the Nazi-Soviet invasion and occupation of Poland had taken place. The southern part of eastern Poland was simultaneously incorporated into the Ukraininan Soviet Socialist Republic, but I guess that inventing a fake pre-war Ukrainian state wouldn’t make sense to Russian propagandists, in view of contemporary Russia’s ongoing annexation of Ukrainian territory and its brutal campaign to destroy Ukrainian independence.

The presentation then showed Nazi Germany invading and taking over the parts of Europe that were in its “sphere of influence” according to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, but failed to show that the Soviet Union was doing the same thing at the same time - invading and occupying not just eastern Poland but also Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, as well as parts of Finland and Romania (and committing war crimes against the people of those countries).

Pretending that these events never happened was a calculated insult to the victims of Soviet oppression that fits perfectly with Russia’s fake version of history in which the Second World War only started in 1941 (when the Soviet Union performed the great patriotic u-turn and joined the allies fighting against Germany, after being betrayed by their former allies the Nazis).

When the presentation moved on to the subsequent defeat of Nazi Germany, no distinction was made between the western allies liberating the countries of western Europe, and the Soviet Union adding the countries of eastern Europe to its empire, subjecting them to a decade of Stalinist terror and a total of nearly half a century trapped behind the Iron Curtain - wasted years that left them destitute in every sense of the word when they finally overthrew communist rule at the end of the 1980s.

In his keynote speech, Putin made the false claim that 40% of the Jews who died in the holocaust were Soviet Jews, which could only be true if territories invaded and occupied by the USSR as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact were regarded as Soviet.

While accusing others of collaborating with the Nazis, he had nothing to say about the extensive collaboration between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that lasted from August 1939 to June 1941.

He somehow forgot to mention the fact that the Nazis and Soviets held a joint military parade in Brest-Litovsk during their invasion of Poland in September 1939.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German%e2%80%93Soviet_military_para...

He also avoided talking about the huge economic and military support that the USSR provided to their Nazi allies, which ironically also helped the Germans in their preparations to launch Operation Barbarossa in June 1941.

From 1939 to 1941, the friendship between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union was also promoted to the Soviet people in state propaganda - even that which was aimed at children.

www.tumblr.com/stillunusual/696491665705385984/pionerskay...

And as well as indoctrinating the citizens of the USSR with pro-Nazi and anti-western messaging, Stalin ordered communist parties throughout the world to stop all agitation against Hitler's regime and to follow suit.

But Putin forgot all about that too....

However, while listing some of the major atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, he made sure to single out “the burned-down village of Khatyn” - a crime that was brought to prominence as a propaganda tool during the Soviet era, as its name is so similar to Katyn (where the Soviet NKVD massacred thousands of Polish prisoners of war in 1940 and subsequently blamed the Germans). But Putin failed to mention that the Khatyn villagers were massacred by Schutzmannschaft Battalion 118 - an auxilliary police battalion of Soviet Nazi collaborators which mainly consisted of Ukrainians but also included Russians. While talking about Nazi “accomplices” in general, Putin picked on Lithuania and Ukraine, with not a single word about other Russian Nazi collaborators like the notorious Russkaya Osvoboditelnaya Narodnaya Armiya (also known as SS Sturmbrigade RONA).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaminski_Brigade

And the fact that hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens had volunteered to fight on the German side during Operation Barbarossa also somehow slipped his mind (as much as 20% of Nazi Germany's military manpower during the invasion of the USSR consisted of Soviet citizens fighting against their own country, about half of whom were ethnic Russians).

Putin failed to mention the Russische Nationalarmee (AKA First Russian National Army) and the Russische Befreiungsarmee (AKA Russkaja Oswoboditel'naja Armija – Russian Liberation Army - ROA).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Russian_National_Army

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Liberation_Army

He also had nothing to say about the Trawnikimänner ("Trawniki men") - officially named SS-Wachmannschaften, but also known as Hiwis or Askaris - who were Nazi collaborators mainly recruited from Soviet POWs (including Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Belarusians, Estonians, Georgians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Russians, Tatars and Ukrainians) captured by the Germans during Operation Barbarossa. The Trawnikis took part in Operation Reinhard, the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews of Poland, and were directly responsible for many massacres of Jewish and non-Jewish civilians. They also served as guards at German camps and participated in the suppression of the Warsaw ghetto uprising and the liquidation of other Jewish ghettos.

Putin even managed to forget how Soviet propaganda had hypocritically claimed that the Zionist movement was an ideological bedfellow of Nazi Germany and that Zionist leaders had collaborated with the Nazis.

Needless to say, he didn’t mention any of the USSR's numerous crimes against humanity, and most definitely didn't say anything about how the Soviet NKVD had collaborated with the German Gestapo in the suppression of Poland’s wartime resistance movement from 1939-41, or that they delivered to the Gestapo over 4000 Jews and German communists who had taken refuge in Soviet held territory, or how the Soviets had subsequently re-opened Nazi camps like Majdanek after the USSR re-occupied Poland in 1944-45, and used them imprison Polish resistance fighters and anyone else who they saw as a threat their takeover of the country.

The contrast between today's Germany (a modern democracy that's no longer a threat to its neighbours) and today's Russia (an authoritarian fascist dictatorship that still regularly invades other countries and poses an existential threat to all of its neighbours) also didn't get a mention at Yad Vashem....

The Polish president Andrzej Duda decided to boycott the forum, after being told that he would not be allowed to speak, because only the representatives of Russia, the USA, Britain, France, Germany and Israel would be given that privilege. I’m not a fan of Duda or the populist political party he represents, but given the amount of agenda-driven historical revisionism on display at the forum, his decision was clearly justified.

Poland was the country with by far the largest Jewish population at the start of Second World War. In fact - if we exclude the USSR - Poland’s pre-war Jewish population was larger than that of all the other countries in Europe put together (Great Britain, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece and Turkey). Poland’s Jewish population was also considerably larger than that of the USSR despite the fact that Poland was a fraction of the USSR’s size.

encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/map/european-jewish-pop...

Approximately 50% of the Jews who died in the holocaust were Polish Jews....

Poland was also the only country whose forces fought against Nazi Germany for the entire duration of the war in Europe - in stark contrast to the Soviet Union (which spent the first two years in bed with Hitler), the USA (which finally turned up two years late), Britain (which was a few months late) and France (which chickened out of helping Poland in 1939, then surrendered to Germany without much of a fight and formed a Nazi collaborationist regime that played a direct role in perpetrating the holocaust).

Poland made the fourth largest contribution to the allied cause, behind the USSR, USA and Britain. The Polish government-in-exile also informed the world about the holocaust as it was actually happening, based on evidence gathered by the Polish resistance, which included brave people like Natalia Zarembina, Jan Karski and Witold Pilecki.

For example, on 10th December 1942, the Polish government sent a diplomatic note, written and signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Raczyński, to the governments of the 26 signatory states of the United Nations Declaration. The nine-page note described what was known about the mass extermination of the Jewish people in German-occupied Poland. It was also a call to action that asked the signatory states to condemn and respond to the crimes the Germans were committing against the Jewish population.

The note clearly stated that more than a million Polish jews had already been killed, and that the Germans intended to kill the rest, as well as Jews from all over Europe. It also included a detailed account of Grossaktion Warschau - the deportation of most of the inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp during the summer of 1942 (from 23rd July to 21st September), where they were killed in gas chambers disguised as showers.

www.flickr.com/photos/stillunusual/albums/72177720313303622

The Polish government was the first allied government to recognise that the Germans planned to completely exterminate the Jews of Europe - a view that was not shared by Britain or the USA (or most Jewish leaders in the west) when Raczyński's note was published.

Poland's exiled government also created and funded Żegota - an underground Polish resistance organisation affiliated with the Armia Krajowa (Home Army), which was dedicated to saving Jews from the holocaust. Poland was the only country in German-occupied Europe where such an organisation, run jointly by Jews and non-Jews, existed. Operatives of Żegota worked in extreme circumstances, under constant threat of death (Poland was also the only country in German-occupied Europe in which aiding Jews in any way was routinely punished by execution), but nevertheless they provided aid to tens of thousands of Jews.

After the war, instead of being recognised as heroes, Żegota's members faced another threat - persecution from Poland's puppet communist regime, which was installed by Stalin and sought to erase any vestiges of independent Polish resistance that could undermine Soviet control. Many who had fought against the Nazis were arrested, imprisoned and/or executed during the decade of Stalinist terror that followed the Second World War in Poland. Żegota was largely unrecognised for many years, overshadowed by post-war political struggles. Outside of Poland, the vast majority of people have still never heard of Żegota….

Poland's exiled government also included Jewish members. After the Germans liquidated the Warsaw ghetto in 1943, one of them, Szmul Zygielbojm, committed suicide in protest against the indifference and inaction of the western allies in the face of the holocaust. In a long suicide note, he said that...."I cannot continue to live and to be silent while the remnants of Polish Jewry, whose representative I am, are being murdered. My comrades in the Warsaw ghetto fell with arms in their hands in the last heroic battle. I was not permitted to fall like them, together with them, but I belong with them, in their mass grave. By my death, I wish to give expression to my most profound protest against the inaction with which the world watches and permits the destruction of the Jewish people"....

Poland's role in the defeat of Nazi Germany, and the unique and highly dangerous work carried out in the occupied country to resist the Germans, document the Nazi programme of genocide and get the word out to the disbelieving western allies - only to find that they didn't do anything about it - was completely eliminated from the carefully manipulated narrative of Yad Vashem's forum. It was also no surprise that RT (Russia's main propaganda channel for the international audience) featured wall to wall coverage of the forum and used the occasion to simultaneously pump out a torrent of anti-Polish disinformation that was even worse than usual.

A few days later on Holocaust Remembrance Day, the commemoration in Poland organised by the Auschwitz Memorial Museum at the site of the former German concentration camp was infinitely more dignified and respectful of the memory of the holocaust. Although there were speeches by politicians, they were kept to a minimum and largely avoided the kind of political point scoring, historical revisionism and holocaust distortion that characterised the forum in Israel. The Polish commemoration was dominated by the presence of 200 elderly Auschwitz survivors - several of whom made poignant, often deeply emotional speeches that put the vacuous drivel parroted by Putin and others at Yad Vashem to shame (and it was sad to see how little attention the international news media paid to the Auschwitz commemoration in comparison to the extensive coverage that was given to the forum in Israel).

It really is shocking that an organisation like Yad Vashem was so willing to insult the memory of the holocaust’s victims, as well as the millions of non-Jewish victims of the Nazis and Soviets, by allowing itself to be used as a conduit for the dissemination of the Kremlin’s revisionist lies and propaganda to a global audience, while licking the Russian president’s boots in public for all to see.

By doing so Yad Vashem embarrassed its own scholars, some of whom made critical statements in subsequent days, after which Yad Vashem issued an apology and also edited its official video of the event (which were welcome signs that the institution does retain some integrity and credibility, but the impact of this back-tracking was obviously tiny compared to that of the Vladimir Putin Show itself)....

UPDATE

In 2022, after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Viatcheslav "Moshe" Kantor, was sanctioned for his ties to Vladimir Putin's war economy.

www.eureporter.co/world/russia/2022/04/11/moshe-kantor-st...

In the run up to the war, Yad Vashem had used its influence in an attempt to exclude another Russian oligarch, Roman Abramovich, from being sanctioned, as he was one of their biggest donors (as well as being a major funder of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories).

www.timesofisrael.com/yad-vashem-chief-rabbi-urged-us-not...

The museum eventually announced that they were going to stop taking his money, but only after he was sanctioned by the UK.

It's sad that an organisation with such an important mission has been so dependent on donations of dodgy Russian cash that two of Putin's oligarch buddies stole from the Russian people....

Writer/director/producer/artist Cevin Soling, President of Spectacle Films, Xemu Records, and World Watch Productions is involved in many facets of the entertainment industry.

Soling wrote, directed, and produced the feature films, THE GILLIGAN MANIFESTO and THE WAR ON KIDS, which found him interviews on the Colbert Report and The New York Times. His movie, THE WAR ON THE WAR ON DRUGS, winner of the best experimental feature film award at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival, the Stoney Award for best documentary from High Times, as well as the “Clear Creek” Honorable Mention Award at the Winslow International Film Festival.

The New York Times, in a rave review at the time of the film’s theatrical release in 2005, proclaimed THE WAR ON THE WAR ON DRUGS "...a lively and well-executed satire that sweetens its occasional truths with rebellious humor..." The film was recently acquired for DVD distribution worldwide by The Disinformation Company.

Soling also executive produced the independent feature RELAX, IT'S JUST SEX, starring Jennifer Tilly, Lori Petty and Cynda Williams, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was seen on HBO and Showtime.

As a writer, Soling penned the animated short film, BORIS THE DOG, which won the “Premio Nuovo” award at the Williamsburg Brooklyn Film Festival and was part of Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festival. The film aired as part of MTV's CARTOON SUSHI as well as on the BBC in England, where it was accompanied by an interview with Soling. His short films CAPTAIN STICKMAN and DESTRUCTION, which Soling wrote and directed, were official selections at 2006 Chicago Indiefest.

Soling created and writes the animated series THE BILL JOHNSON SHOW, also featured in Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festival and in video compilation “Sick and Twisted – Volume 7,” released by Ventura Distribution. He has written a series of ten illustrated books under the heading of The Rumpleville Chronicles. The first three titles of the ten book series, The Jolly Elf, The Disciples of Trotsky, and The Bomb that Followed Me Home will be released in the winter of 2008 through Monk Media.

In the documentary arena, Soling is producer and executive producer of the hour-long documentary about trepanation, A HOLE IN THE HEAD, which won the Best Documentary Award at both the Atlantic City Film Festival and at the Brooklyn International Film Festival. A HOLE IN THE HEAD was broadcast on Discovery and The Learning Channel and is available on video. through Beatnik Home Video. Soling also executive produced the documentary on auto-urine therapy, URINE: GOOD HEALTH, also available on Beatnik. Currently Soling is directing four film projects: a two-part documentary on the oppression of children in America entitled THE WAR ON KIDS, a documentary on the Ik tribe in Northern Uganda, and a documentary on the John Frum cargo cult of Vanuatu, all of which are in postproduction. A documentary about the staging of a Swan Lake ballet performance featuring actual llamas in the roles of the swans and a jug band performing the Tchaikovsky score is in production. A preview of this project aired on PBS in Indiana, where the documentary is being shot.

In addition to his film work, Soling has been active in the music industry via his record company, Xemu Records. He was the songwriter, guitarist, and lead singer for THE NEANDERTHAL SPONGECAKE, whose CD, THE SIDE EFFECTS OF NAPALM, received considerable airplay across the U.S including major stations such as WLIR and WXRK (K-ROCK) in New York City. The song, Tastes Like Chicken was featured on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show. Another song from the album, Buffalo, is currently used as a theme song for the A&E TV series Confessions of a Matchmaker. He currently writes and performs with THE LOVE KILLS THEORY – a band inspired by the Situationist philosophical movement and as well as bio-genetic studies on the evolution of despair. Their debut CD, Happy Suicide, Jim!, was released in January of 2007 and charted on CMJ’s top 200 and was played in rotation on over 70 commercial radio stations.

Additionally, Soling has also served as producer for Jackie Chan, Ani DiFranco, Don Ho, The Smile Zone, and The Neanderthal Spongecake. He recently completed work as creator and executive producer of the album WHEN PIGS FLY, a compilation of major artists performing covers of favorites one would never imagine them performing. Among the artists featured were Devo, The Fixx, The Box Tops, Roy Clark, Jackie Chan, Lesley Gore, The Oak Ridge Boys, Herman’s Hermits, and Ani DiFranco. Soling conceived of and initiated the establishment of The Hard Rock Café as a live performance venue by touring Xemu artists Scary Chicken through the chain.

Outside of entertainment, Soling wrote programming code and was published in the computer journal On Three magazine. Soling, a member of the high IQ society Mensa, is currently a candidate for a Masters degree from the extension school at Harvard University where he is enrolled and also employed as a research assistant there. In addition, he is awaiting an appointment for a diplomatic post with the U.S. Foreign Service where he received his security clearances and was given an employment offer pending an appropriate assignment.

11/03/2021. London, United Kingdom. Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden visits the Science Museum, London, which has just opened as a Vaccination Centre. Picture by Pippa Fowles / No 10 Downing Street

Navigating Disinformation session at the Global Conference for Media Freedom in London, 11 July 2019.

“Everything about this country is being kept secret – it’s all wrapped up. And I don’t think the secrets will be out in my lifetime”. It was a poor but enlightened old man who uttered these words and to be very honest I do not even remember his name. I only felt drawn to him while working in Civil Hospital Karachi during the early eighties.

He had suffered a fracture, and was awaiting his operation in an orthopedics ward. I would often visit him and gradually learnt of his old association with the KP province and its leaders like Abdul Ghaffar Khan. One day he started praising Sir Abdul Qaiyum Khan for contribution to education in his province. I asked if he meant Khan Qayyum Khan. That is when he was provoked, started turning from side to side ostensibly to prevent himself from uttering an abuse and that’s when he said what he said. May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Whether it’s true or not, all our leaders have certainly acted like they are safeguarding certain secrets. And the process did not commence with our civilian, despicable civilian or angelic leaders, it started with our glorious leaders. Mr. Jinnah while reading the commission of appointment of a provincial governor, asked his personal secretary S M Yusuf of the Indian Civil Service why the secrecy clause had not been inserted in his oath. In all fairness I must mention that there was great logic to this, as the secrecy clause was even there in the oath of provincial ministers.

Then our Secretary General of the Cabinet, Chaudhry Muhammad Ali not from the Indian Civil Service, protected secrets further by censoring the speech of Governor General Jinnah where he guaranteed all freedom and rights to minorities. The full speech has since been released, affirmed, reaffirmed, reiterated and sufficiently made clear several times in the past few years, yet we behave as if he said just the exact opposite. The lessons learnt over the years had already ruined 2-3 generations. Must we get Agatha Christie to solve this one?

During the late seventies when a Mard-i-Mujahid was unravelling all sorts of mysteries and evil doings about the Prime Minister he deposed, a civil servant told me that he had witnessed such a witch hunt only once before when Suhrawardy was dismissed by Iskander Mirza. Mirza though an honorary Major General is yet regarded as that bloody civilian who provoked the gods so much that they had to send angels to rectify things, and by making him provide the means for doing so.

When the angels are in power, everything not secret also becomes a profound secret. Yet seriously a few things are absolutely not secrets --- that disinformation which the ministry of information directly spreads. It all started with Ayub Khan’s de facto Vice President or Information Secretary Altaf Gauhar establishing a research and reference (thankfully not analysis) wing in his ministry to which a joint secretary was assigned. The name of the joint secretary must have remained a top secret as nobody heard of him, it appeared only when Ziaul Haq appointed him as High Commissioner to Britain. It was Brig (Retd.) F R Khan. His duty: spread rumors and make sure most of them are false!

And we soon saw the wisdom of it. Everyone knew the Nawab of Kalabagh had outlived his utility. How did we know? We had reliably learnt this from someone reliable. And we also knew S Fida Hassan of the Indian Civil Service and a personal confidante of President Ayub Khan, was being appointed his successor as Governor of West Pakistan. How did we know – because everyone knew it and what everyone knows is true. Wrong – the governor designate was actually General Musa. F R Khan had succeeded! Fida Hasan went over to Yahya Khan’s camp. More on that later.

Yahya Khan’s best known secret did not at all have anything to do either with East Pakistan or Sheikh Mujibur Rehman. It did not even have much to do with Pakistan either. It was sending Henry Kissinger clandestinely to China, and Nixon really loved him for that, although he lamented he couldn’t save Yahya or his country.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto made a mockery of secrecy by asking the people in a public meeting whether party loyalist Ashfaq should be sent to Vietnam as Ambassador. Yet he kept news about Kahuta so secret that even Kissinger warned him not about that, but about the rotten and useless French nuclear reprocessing plant.

Ziaul Haq aided his personal ambition plans by keeping his own name secret. I can assure you very few people had heard his name on July 5, 1977. That day the newspaper appeared promptly with a picture of Prime Minister Bhutto and President Chaudhry with US Ambassador Arthur Hummel Jr. at the national day reception. But something was amiss – the radio was mentioning that the valiant armed forces of the country had taken over.

I called up somebody who knew most things, and asked if Gen Shariff or Gen Zia had taken over and he replied he didn’t know. In his first interview to Newsweek, Zia claimed that journalists should be avoided like the plague if you have to protect your career. No wonder Yasser Arafat was not sure if he was the same Brigadier who had killed thousands of his people in Jordan, and our Ambassador Samiullah Koreshi also could not confirm as that would not have been in the national or public interest. But anyway on taking over, one of the first things he did was to promote Agha Shahi of the Indian Civil Service as Secretary General Foreign Affairs. Again nobody remembers this; they only remember Ghulam Ishaq Khan not of the Indian Civil Service being made Secretary General in Chief – a designation bigger than life or anyone in life! Gaddafi was only a secretary general in Libya.

On taking over, Zia is supposed to have told civil servants to help him because he lacked the legitimacy of Jinnah, the personality of Ayub Khan or the charisma of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Anyway he was obviously impressed with FR Khan’s tactics and spreads lots of rumors some persisting even beyond him. Agha Shahi was the man who actually betrayed Bhutto, Ghulam Ishaq Khan took his son’s bicycle at night to tell Zia to take over, Bhutto was killed before hanging, Gen Chishti wanted to takeover but Zia found out, Illahi Bux Soomro will be prime minister, Bhutto took over power at night, Rawalpindi jail has been declared dangerous and so needs to be demolished, the French ambassador was not beaten up near Kahuta, the Americans are behind the siege of the Masjid ul Haraam. So help us God! But just imagine poor Ishaq Khan riding the bicycle and arriving at the gate of Army House. He may have been killed for being a madman if he asked to see the Big Boss.

When Zia’s plan and plane was finally blown up, somebody told me that this had happened. I thought for a moment then requested that person to find out if Ghulam Ishaq Khan or Aslam Beg had taken over. The response: Its Ghulam Ishaq Khan but who is Aslam Beg? And so the legacy continues.

Another phenomenon in our body politic is changing loyalty before time. Let's examine a case study. President Ayub Khan is beleaguered through protests all over the country and promises to seek a solution to the crisis by consultations with all politicians. A Round Table Conference is convened. He invites everyone and sends his ministers as emissaries to all the leading politicians. Foreign Minister Mian Arshad Hussain and Defense Minister Admiral A R Khan are sent to Sheikh Mujibur Rehman to convince him to attend the meeting. They actually visit the Sheikh but what do they tell him. The Hamoodur Rehman Commission notes that they told Mujib that Ayub Khan was going anyway so why bother. Despite that specious advice, Mujib actually attended the meeting.

When Yahya Khan took over, a notification was issued appointing Arshad Hussain, Admiral A R Khan and S. Fida Hasan as Advisers to the President with ministerial rank. The notification had to be rescinded in a few days because the army prevailed upon Yahya not to retain the dead wood of Ayub Khan.

Changing loyalties before time – that is a highly interesting concept. This is the way ZAB described it: When Mickey Mouse was getting married, his father advised him; “Mickey, if you are a man you should consummate your marriage on the same day but if you are a mouse, you will do it on the following day.” To which, Mickey replied; “Father, I am a dirty rat, I consummated it last night.”

And then true to his style to make sure the people know to whom his guns are pointed, Bhutto adds, “In our revolutionary times, with the earth shattering signs of a third world war on the horizon, there is no place for mice. Agha Shahi of Sukkur and Gadap and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of this regime should take note of this timely warning.”

The picture shows Pakistan’s foremost diplomats.

Arsonists have attacked defenseless Christian Churches causing severe damage and in many cases the burning to the ground of 100 year old historic churches and their contents that include irreplaceable documents and invaluable historic artifacts .

And the list is growing..

A prayer ,

“If this fire was deliberately set, we ask for you to forgive whoever set it, and heal them, and bring them into your family with us, so that they may learn of your love for them, the same love that you have overwhelmed us with in our lives,”

No offer as yet by the NDP Liberal Government to help rebuild the burned Christian churches nor any sincere attempt by them to apprehend and charge the perpetrator(s) ?

A4 information sheet for the “Soundproofs” exhibition, at London’s Museum of Installation (gallery) in July 1997. “Soundproofs” featured audio installations by Bruce Gilbert (from the band Wire), Joe Banks (Disinformation), David Clegg and Javier Marchán, performances by Martin Creed and Keiko Owada, Bruce Gilbert, Joe Banks, and Hayley Newman, plus a panel discussion chaired by Robert Worby (from BBC Radio 3) and the late Paul Burwell.

The information sheet refers to installation art as “being delineated as a broad discursive field” which is “often presented with an almost exclusive reliance on the visual”. So, in this exhibition the Museum of Installation presented “a series of empty rooms in which there is nothing to see beyond the architectural fabric”. The “Soundproofs” exhibition featured “National Grid” - the electrical sound installation created by Joe Banks for the project Disinformation, and, although the sound from this installation was heard (and felt) as vibrations rising up through the floor into an empty gallery, in fact the set-up in the basement was quite photogenic (see links below).

The info sheet acknowledges “Soundproofs” as a “collaboration with David Clegg of Workfortheeyetodo”, describing how as the gallery’s “exterior skin is being refurbished” the artists were “producing a score for the architectural container”, and then describing how “by moving through the building the listener then recreates and modifies the works, fusing mnemonic triggers and fragments into a cohesive form”. “Soundproofs” took place at the same time that the Workfortheeyetodo space was exhibiting works by John Cage, Paul Burwell and Stephen Cripps.

“National Grid” was first published on LP in 1996 and first exhibited at the MOI in 1997, pre-dating works such as “Domestic Grid Flux” by CM von Hausswolff (Modern Art Oxford, 2000) and “Electrical Walks” by Christina Kubisch (Klangraum Raumklang, Köln, 2004) by 4 and 8 years respectively (and, rather strangely, Christina Kubisch often describes herself as belonging to the [quote] “first generation of sound artists”, despite her first work being published 65 years after Luigi Russolo’s famous Intonarumori, and decades after pioneering works by John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire, etc).

well let me pass along some of history on gross manipulations of civil liberties during the seventies and eighties, a program called Cointelpro

Through a secret program called the Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO), there was a concerted effort to subvert the will of the people to avoid the rise of a black Messiah that would mobilize the African-American community into a meaningful political force.

This documentary establishes historical perspective on the measures initiated by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI which aimed to discredit black political figures and forces of the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Combining declassified documents, interviews, rare footage and exhaustive research, it investigates the government's role in the assassinations of Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Were the murders the result of this concerted effort to avoid "a black Messiah"?

Spies, lies, and war: Lessons of COINTELPRO

by Sherry Wolf, International Socialist Review, September/October 2006

What was COINTELPRO?

In 1971, activists broke into FBI offices in Media, Pennsylvania, and discovered files that proved what many had suspected for years-the government was involved in widespread domestic surveillance, infiltration, and violence against radical organizations and individuals. The Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO), mounted by the FBI to "disrupt, misdirect, discredit, and otherwise neutralize" the civil rights, Black liberation, Puerto Rican independence, Native-American, antiwar, socialist, and New Left movements of the 1960s and 1970s, is one of the most notorious of the U.S. government's domestic anti-radical programs. Most of what has been learned about government activities against radicals was accessed through hundreds of thousands of pages of previously secret documents released through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)-though most information remains largely censored and blacked out.

COINTELPRO was the brainchild of J. Edgar Hoover, the founder and director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972. Shaped by the anticommunist hysteria in the aftermath of the successful Russian Revolution of 1917, Hoover took part in the Palmer Raids against radicals and spent the rest of his life in the service of espionage and undermining suspected "subversives" of every sort. Contemporary histories tend to focus on Hoover's maniacal egotism and closeted homosexuality to explain his lifelong fixation on repressing minorities who fought discrimination and reds who challenged the status quo. But Hoover's agenda was embraced by every president he served, including Democrats Harry Truman, John E Kennedy, & Lyndon B. Johnson.

The FBI, in close collaboration with local police units (sometimes called Red Squads), used a number of techniques in its efforts to disrupt and destroy leftist groups, the most important of which are enumerated here.5

Eavesdropping: This involved not only electronic surveillance, but also putting "tails" on people and breaking into offices and homes, as well as tampering with mail. The FBI's intention was not simply to gather intelligence, but, by making their presence known in various ways, create paranoia among activists.

Bogus mail: FBI agents would fabricate letters, ostensibly written by movement activists, which spread lies and disinformation. The Bureau sent many fake letters to American Indian Movement (AIM) and Black Panther Party (BPP) leaders and activists that were designed to sow confusion and division in the ranks. The Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver wings of the BPP, for example, were split after the FBI sent a number of manufactured letters from disgruntled party members to Cleaver, then in exile in Algeria, criticizing Huey Newton's leadership.

Black propaganda: The distribution of fabricated articles, leaflets, etc., that misrepresented the politics and objectives of an organization or leader, in order to discredit the group or individual and to pit people and organizations against each other.

Disinformation: The FBI often released false or misleading information to the press to discredit groups or individuals and to foster tension.

Harassment arrests: The police or FBI often arrested leaders and activists on trumped up charges in order to tie up activists in legal and court proceedings, drain their financial resources, and heighten their sense of fear and paranoia.

Infiltrators or agent provocateurs: The infiltration of organizations by police agents served two purposes. One was to gather intelligence on the group. Provocateurs were used to try and encourage individuals to engage in illegal activity that could then be attributed to the group as a whole; to disrupt the internal functioning of organizations; and to assist in spreading of disinformation inside and outside the group.

Bad-jacketing: This "refers to the practice of creating suspicion-through the spread of rumors, manufacture of evidence, etc.-that bonafide organizational members, usually in key positions, are FBI/police informers. "6 The technique was used to particularly deadly effect inside the American Indian Movement. Talented AIM activist Anna Mae Aquash, for example, who was murdered on Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota in February 1976, was first subject to a successful whispering campaign, initiated against her by FBI informant Doug Durham, who had joined the AIM chapter in Des Moines, Iowa. Durham's role in AIM also seems to have been to encourage AIM members to engage in "rash, inflammatory acts," according to author Peter Mathiessen.7 Durham, for example, released "several unauthorized memos, disseminated on organizational letterhead, indicating that AIM was preparing to launch a campaign of 'systematic violence.""

Fabrication of evidence: FBI agents, police, and prosecutors routinely fabricated evidence in order to obtain convictions in criminal cases against activists. A number of AIM and BPP activists, including BPP leader Geronimo Pratt and AIM leader Leonard Peltier, who has been in prison for three decades for a crime he did not commit, were convicted on such trumped-up evidence.9

Assassinations: There is ample evidence that FBI and related agencies played a direct role in the assassination of a number of key radical leaders.

Report in the Evening Standard newspaper by journalist Max Bell, published 9 October 1996, previewing the following evening’s Disobey club night at the Garage music venue in Highbury, London. Disobey was organised by Paul Smith of Blast First - the record company responsible for publishing artists like Sonic Youth, Big Black, Dinosaur Jr., Suicide and Panasonic, alongside sound works by the artist Jeremy Deller, etc. The name Blast First was a direct quotation from the Vorticist magazine “Blast”, founded in 1914 by the artist Wyndham Lewis - “BLAST First (from politeness) ENGLAND”.

The Evening Standard describes Disobey as a landmark of the London club scene, name-checks notable Disobey patrons such as Jarvis Cocker, Brian Eno and Nick Cave, and Disobey performers such as Iain Sinclair, Richard James (Aphex Twin), Jake Chapman, Bill Drummond, Mark Manning, Bruce Gilbert (of the band Wire), and (on this occasion) Disinformation, but also stresses how Disobey was a no-dress-code venue, welcoming everyone.

The article also discusses how (on the following evening) “the noise will be provided by Joe Baker (sic) of Disinformation performing National Grid”, which “involves him tapping into the hum of the power network and blasting the Garage’s long suffering patrons into oblivion using Extremely Low Frequency”. Extremely Low Frequency WHAT wasn’t specified (it was Very Low Frequency radio noise)… nonetheless, especially bearing in mind that the ease of access to information that we now take for granted (ie - Google) didn’t yet exist, this article helped introduce many thousands of readers to ideas and techniques which were (at that time) considered obscure even inside the tiny micro-culture of experimental noise music.

The night in question was attended by (among others) the writer Kathy Acker and the artist CM von Hausswolff. CM von Hausswolff subsequently included (quote) “Disinformation live at Disobey” in a list of events organised by his art project KREV (list published in Immerse magazine, issue 1, page 30, 1996) despite Disinformation having NOTHING to do with KREV, and before von Hausswolff went on to exhibit very similar sound works, eg - “Domestic Grid Flux” in the “Audible Light” exhibition at Modern Art, Oxford, in 2000.

Also with regard to documenting influence, the Evening Standard has a circulation of over 800,000 copies, plus “National Grid” was also described in the MTV magazine “Blah Blah Blah”, which had a circulation of 120,000 copies (see link)…

Bruce Gilbert also remixed “National Grid” recordings… twice… for the Disinformation “Antiphony” double remix CD, and exhibited his own (unrelated) sound work alongside the first “National Grid” exhibit at the Museum of Installation gallery, both in 1997…

Seventeen Murrow Fellows visited Gracy College and were hosted by the Cox International Center Nov. 9, 2022. The Murrow Fellows are sponsored by the U.S. State Department and include international journalists from a variety of countries including South Korea, Australia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and others. The theme of the discussion was "Media Responsibility in an Age of Disinformation for the Indo-Pacific."

In February 2012 the Wysing Arts Centre produced a limited-edition artist publication entitled “The Starry Rubric Set”, co-edited by Gareth Bell-Jones and by the designers An Endless Supply. Contributing artists were asked to respond to an invitation to “predict two points in motion that will come into alignment”. The response offered by Joe Banks was…

“To fulfill my prediction, draw two points as dots, about 5mm wide and 10cm apart on a card, and bring them into motion by moving the card backwards and forwards in front of your eyes - the lines described by the motion of these points are parallel and therefore aligned. Cover your right eye with your right hand, and, holding the card with your left hand, focus your left eye on the right point, but remain aware of the left dot in your peripheral vision. Keeping the left eye focussed on the right point, move the card to and fro, adjusting the viewing distance, until the left dot... disappears. The blind-spot experiment is well-known, however, beyond the physiological truism that a section of the retina is insensitive to visual information, what's less well understood is that the images the mind places over blind-spots are illusions that we experience not only as experimental anomalies or visual novelties, but as part of everyday visual reality. It's not so much a question of the mind passively failing to perceive a point, as the mind actively creating an image to replace it with.”

The Wysing publication served as a testing ground for an idea that was subsequently explored in the “Rorschach Audio” book (pages 170 and 173), and in an article in Shoppinghour magazine (issue 10, Spring 2013), and ultimately condensed into the assertion (published in May 2016 on the website of the AXNS Collective) that, on the basis of visual phenomena such as retinal inversion, blind-spots, and kinetic depth effect and Necker cube illusions etc, that “visual reality is in itself a carefully constructed optical illusion”.

The evolution of this idea is also documented here -

The Kremlin's Lord Haw Haw made this ludicrous remark in reply to a Twitter post by "Spriter" - a vatnik account that spews out an endless torrent of Russian disinformation 24/7.

And it's characteristic that Spriter was incapable of having a tantrum about the demolition of this monument without lying about it. His claim that it was "erected on the burial site of 500 dead Soviet soldiers" is completely untrue.

First of all, although Głubczyce is now in Poland - before the Second World War it was the German town of Leobschütz, and only became Polish as a result of the 1945 Potsdam Agreement.

Secondly, there are no Soviet soldiers buried anywhere in the town.

Although Soviet monuments have gradually disappeared from view all over Poland (and the rest of central and eastern Europe), monuments that are inside cemeteries or over burial grounds remain untouched (in Poland at least), and the graves of Soviet soldiers would never be desecrated in such a way by the Polish authorities.

In 2018, I took a trip to Warsaw's Praga district to visit and photograph sites commemorating victims of Stalinist terror, one of which is a memorial in Plot 45N of Bródno Cemetery.

A short distance from the memorial, I was amazed to discover a plot containing the graves of fallen Soviet soldiers, which had been maintained in pristine condition, despite the fact that in all probability, nobody visits it anymore.

I personally think that monuments like the one in Głubczyce should be preserved in museums rather than being demolished, but I can certainly understand the desire to remove them from public spaces. However, George Galloway's ridiculous reply to Spriter's tweet simply underlines the fact that he's a complete and utter clown - and also a total hypocrite.

In April 2023, when a monument commemorating Polish and Lithuanian victims of Soviet deportation to Galashor in Perm Krai, Russia, was destroyed, gormless George didn't have anything to say about that.

And in 2020, when authorities in the Russian city of Tver removed memorial plaques commemorating victims of the Katyń massacre from the former Soviet secret police building - claiming that their inscriptions were “not based on documented facts” (another Russian lie) - Galloway was unavailable for comment.

And during their invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russians removed, destroyed or damaged holodomor memorials, cemeteries, mass graves of Stalin's victims (including Polish victims of the Katyń massacre), holocaust memorials and numerous monuments that celebrated Ukrainian culture and identity - but George was probably too busy sucking Russian cocks to notice any of that....

Palais de Tokyo (art space) in Paris commissioned the “Rorschach Audio - Orpheus Mix” – a tribute to the Surrealist film-maker Jean Cocteau – recorded by the art project Disinformation in 2009.

The finished work was exhibited on a special Palais de Tokyo “Répondeur” [answering machine] throughout July 2009, and exhibited online until 2011. The commission was curated by the writer Rahma Khazam and administered by Claire Szulc.

The commission itself and the Disinformation art project are both documented in the Palais de Tokyo hardback book “2009 A-Z - From Yodeling to Quantum Physics” (“Du Yodel å la Physique Quantique”) pages 40 to 41, edited by the curator Marc-Olivier Wahler, the philosopher Mark Alizart, and by Palais de Tokyo publisher Frédéric Grossi.

A6 format postcard advertising the Disinformation concert, for experimental music promoter Lampo, Chicago, 16 April 2005. Disinformation performed with live and with pre-recorded radio (electromagnetic) noise sources, simultaneously projecting “The Air Pump” - a video made in tribute to the artwork of the same name by the 18th century painter Joseph Wright (aka Wright of Derby), and showcasing material from the “Sense Data & Perception” CD. The video featured high-voltage discharges through cold plasma vacuum tubes, and premiered at this Lampo event.

The concert was organised by Lampo proprietor Andrew Fenchel, and took place at the Pieholden Suite Sound (recording studio) in the Ukrainian Village (thanks also to Kevin Drumm, who, so rumour has it, had a hand in Disinformation being invited by Lampo). The postcard was screen-printed in thick ink on heavy card, featuring excellent Wyndham Lewis (“Blast”) style typography by renown designer Alisa Wolfson.

During this visit, Joe Banks also presented a “Rorschach Audio” lecture-demonstration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, at the invitation of the sound artist Nicolas Collins (author of the book “Handmade Electronic Music”, who also arranged the bulk importation of hundreds of Barrel of Monkeys for Joe). Lampo Spring 2005 performers were Disinformation, Malcolm Goldstein, Alexei Borisov and the Bohman Brothers. The concert immediately preceding Disinformation at Lampo was given by the sound artist CM von Hausswolff, who also lectured at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago... and this is particularly apposite, since the “Rorschach Audio” demonstrations expose and de-bunk the beliefs about Electronic Voice Phenomena (ghost-voice) recordings that form a central focus within the work of CM von Hausswolff.

Page height advertisement in Time Out magazine, 17 May 2000, page 57, promoting the “Sonic Boom” exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, April to June 2000. The “Sonic Boom” exhibitors were Angela Bulloch, Paul Burwell, Disinformation, Heri Dono, Max Eastley, Brian Eno, Paulo Feliciano, Greyworld, Stephan von Huene, Ryoji Ikeda, Philip Jeck, Thomas Köner, Christina Kubisch, Chico MacMurtie, Christian Marclay, Katarina Matiasek, Russell Mills, Mariko Mori, John Oswald, Pan Sonic, Project Dark, Lee Ranaldo (from Sonic Youth), Scanner, Paul Schütze, Rafael Toral and Ian Walton. Click on the image to enlarge.

“Sonic Boom” was curated by David Toop and Fiona Bradley, and was (and still is) the largest and most ambitious exhibition of sound art ever staged in the UK (and, in terms of cultural context, it’s also interesting to note that the reverse page in this Time Out advertises “Witness” - the UFO themed exhibition by Susan Hiller, staged by Artangel, and “Ant Noises” at the Saatchi Gallery - featuring Damien Hirst, Ron Mueck, Gavin Turk, Chris Ofili and Rachael Whiteread). Promotional graphics advertising the Disinformation performance at The Hayward Gallery, London, 2 June 2000. The performance took place inside “Artificial Lightning” - a hugely successful and wildly interactive sound, light and shadow installation, that since toured extensively under the revised title “The Origin of Painting”. The Hayward Gallery performance consisted of the live electromagnetic soundtrack used in the “Artificial Lightning” installation, mixed with an in-situ performance of “National Grid” (electromagnetic noise from live alternating current), mixed with (pre-recorded) sounds from the Disinformation “Stargate” recordings (radio emissions from the sun), originally released (alongside “National Grid”) by the record company Ash International in 1996. The performance was widely advertised (in for instance Time Out magazine) and physically packed, taking place as part of the “Sonic Boom” exhibition, curated by David Toop and organised by Fiona Bradley, which ran at The Hayward Gallery, April to June 2000.

Sonic Boom exhibitors included Angela Bulloch, Paul Burwell, Disinformation, Heri Dono, Max Eastley, Brian Eno, Paulo Feliciano, Greyworld, Stephan von Huene, Ryoji Ikeda, Philip Jeck, Thomas Köner, Christina Kubisch, Chico MacMurtie, Christian Marclay, Katarina Matiasek, Russell Mills, Mariko Mori, John Oswald, Pan Sonic, Project Dark, Lee Ranaldo, Scanner, Paul Schütze, Rafael Toral and Ian Walton. “Artificial Lightning” was installed directly adjacent to Brian Eno’s exhibit. Siân Ede (of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) described “Artificial Lightning” as (quote) “way and ahead the best piece in Sonic Boom”, sci-fi author Jeff Noon wrote in The Independent newspaper that “people are fascinated by this work; it brings a shiver, a sudden recognition of death... as though we have seen or heard our own ghost”, and, writing in The Financial Times, the art critic William Packer described the Disinformation installation as “actively thrilling”.

Similar graphics were previously produced for Disinformation performances at Disobey (10 Oct 1996), The Royal College of Art (5 Dec 1996) and South London Gallery (15 Aug 1998) etc. The promotional graphics feature 3d computer models of VLF and military radio antennas, which served as de-facto Disinformation logos on various CDs and catalogues etc from 1996 onwards.

The Sound Mirrors video – “Blackout” by Disinformation – has been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally since being filmed by Barry Hale and first exhibited in 1997. In 1999 and 2000 the video formed the centrepiece of the Arts Council funded “Blackout” exhibition, which toured to the Waygood Gallery (Newcastle), Broadway Centre (Nottingham) and ICA New Media Centre (London), since when the video featured in numerous group exhibitions and several Disinformation solo shows. The Sound Mirrors video has most recently been exhibited in the “Digest Sound” exhibition at the Witte Zaal [gallery] (Gent), as part of the Courtisane Film Festival in 2010, and at Le Bon Accueil [sonic arts gallery] (Rennes) in 2014.
