What pediatricians want parents to know about the COVID-19 vaccine for kids

As the COVID-19 vaccine has been rolling out for children ages 5 to 11, questions for pediatricians have been rolling in.

Many parents are simply wondering where they can find the long-awaited vaccine locally — and fast. Plenty other questions are from parents with a range of concerns about safety and effectiveness in kids.

Here are some common questions from parents, with advice from pediatricians around the country:

Is the vaccine safe?

Yes, it is safe for children 5 to 11, said Dr. Adriana Cadilla, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida, and a mother of children ages 6 and 8 who were vaccinated Saturday.

Cadilla said she and most pediatricians are recommending the vaccine for their patients. “This is how we save lives,” she said. “We administer vaccines, we promote vaccines, and we would not recommend something that we wouldn’t do for our own child.”

In authorizing the two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for emergency use in children ages 5 to 11 — the only COVID-19 vaccine cleared for kids in the U.S. — the Food and Drug Administration said it was 90.7% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID, and there were no serious side effects in about 3,100 children studied who received it. The commonly reported side effects included arm pain, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, fever and nausea, and most effects went away within a couple days, the FDA said.

“The side effects that you see with a vaccine are mild in comparison to if you did have acute COVID,” Cadilla said. “Vaccine is by far a safer choice.”

Is there a risk of myocarditis from the vaccine?

As for concerns about heart inflammation known as myocarditis or pericarditis, no cases were reported in the Pfizer trial of children 5 to 11. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been rare cases, mostly in male teens and young adults, and these patients can be treated with medicine and recover quickly.

The risk of heart inflammation from having COVID is actually a much bigger threat, said Dr. Gigi Chawla, chief of general pediatrics at Children’s Minnesota.

“Myocarditis is part of the illness that can be experienced by people with COVID-19,” she said. “The rates of people having myocarditis associated with illness versus vaccine are far greater for illness. So if a family truly is concerned about myocarditis, they should be vaccinated.”

Does the Covid vaccine affect fertility?

“I don’t know that there’s any reason to believe that COVID vaccination would have any impact on fertility,” said Dr. Anna Sick-Samuels, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, who has a 4-year-old she would vaccinate if she could.

“There’s no clear biologic link that the vaccine would even have,” she said. “There’s not a general reason that, or theory why, a vaccine of any kind should have impact on fertility.”

On the other hand, doctors do know that unvaccinated pregnant women can have potentially serious complications from COVID-19, Sick-Samuels said.

“We’ve seen that women who are pregnant and get COVID infection are actually more likely to have complications and preterm delivery and challenges, unfortunately, with their pregnancy and neonatal course,” she said. “And we know that the vaccine is really helpful in preventing those types of complications.”

Why is the vaccine based on a child's age?

Many parents are used to giving medication based on their child's weight. Why does a tiny 5-year-old get the same vaccine dose as a much bigger 11-year-old?

“Medicines work differently than vaccines,” explained Dr. Stanley Spinner, chief medical officer at Texas Children’s Hospital.

“If you give a full adult dose of [a drug] to a very small child, their liver or kidneys may not be able to manage that full dose,” he said. “But vaccines are inducing an immune response. So it doesn’t matter what your weight is. It’s really based on the immune response and that is more age-related.”

My child is turning 12 in a couple of months. Should I wait for the adult dose?

No, advises Spinner because the Pfizer vaccine is just as effective at the 10 microgram dose for kids ages 5 to 11 as the 30 microgram dose is for older kids and adults.

“There’s no reason to wait to get the 30, you’re not going to get stronger protection waiting those few extra weeks with that higher dose,” he said. And delaying vaccinations means your child is unprotected longer.

For kids who turn 12 between the first and second doses, which are given three weeks apart, they will be given the adult dose the second time, Spinner said.

“It’s based on the birthday,” he said. “It’s not based on a weight or anything else.”

Why do kids need the vaccine if they don't get as sick as adults?

While children don’t die from COVID-19 at the same rates as older people, they still can suffer short-term and long-term effects, develop multisystem inflammatory syndrome, require hospitalization, and spread the virus to others, said Dr. Ilan Shapiro, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics and medical director of health education and wellness at AltaMed community health network in Los Angeles.

Vaccines protect against the “full heat of the COVID-19 disease,” which is why he plans to vaccinate his 6-year-old and 9-year-old. “For me, in knowing that my kids will be safer at school, that is the route that I am pursuing,” he said. “I want to protect my kiddos.”

There have been more than 1.9 million COVID-19 cases in children ages 5 to 11 in the United States, according to the CDC. More than 8,300 children in this group have been hospitalized with COVID-19, a third of whom required intensive care, and 94 have died, CDC data show.

Vaccinating children not only protects them, but it also helps protect the community and hopefully can help restore some normalcy, said Dr. Jay Harvey, a pediatrician in private practice in Boca Raton, Florida.

“The overhead view is that the more children and adults who are vaccinated, the quicker everyone gets out of the pandemic, we stop the spread, we prevent the creation of new mutant strains, or at least limit that,” he said, “and everybody gets to hopefully start living the life they left behind almost two years ago.”

Feds urge schools to provide COVID-19 shots, info for kids

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is encouraging local school districts to host clinics to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to kids and information to parents on the benefits of the shots as the White House looks to speedily provide vaccines to those ages 5 to 11.

First lady Jill Biden and Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy visited the Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia, on Monday to launch a nationwide campaign to promote child vaccinations. The school was the first to administer the polio vaccine in 1954.

The visit came just days after federal regulators recommended the COVID-19 vaccine for the age group. The White House says the first lady will visit pediatric vaccination clinics across the country over the coming weeks to encourage the shots.

“The vaccine is the best way to protect your children against COVID-19,” she told parents in the school’s cafeteria, after touring a clinic in the gymnasium that vaccinated 260 students. “It’s been thoroughly reviewed and rigorously tested. It’s safe. It’s free. And it’s available for every child in this country, five and up."

At the same time, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona are sending a letter to school districts across the country calling on them to organize vaccine clinics for their newly eligible students. The officials are reminding school districts that they can tap into billions of dollars in federal coronavirus relief money to support pediatric vaccination efforts.

The Biden administration is providing local school districts with tools to help schools partner with pharmacies to administer shots. And it's asking schools to share information on the benefits of vaccines and details about the vaccination process with parents, to counter disinformation surrounding the shots.

The White House is encouraging schools to host community conversations and share fact sheets on the vaccines and is working with the American Academy of Pediatrics to partner local physicians with schools aiming to share science-based information about the shots.

“Parenthood and worrying go hand-in-hand — it’s just what we do,” the first lady told parents. “So, I can’t promise you that the dangers of the world will become any less frightening. Just wait until your kids start driving! But with this vaccine, we can take away at least one of those worries. A big one.”

About 28 million kids ages 5 to 11 are newly eligible for shots now that the Pfizer vaccine is approved for the age group. The White House says the federal government has procured enough of the two-dose vaccine for all of them.

A Pfizer study of 2,268 children found the vaccine was almost 91% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infections. The Food and Drug Administration studied the shots in 3,100 vaccinated kids in concluding the shots are safe.

While kids are less likely than adults to develop severe COVID-19, with the delta variant they get infected and transmit “just as readily as adults do,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious diseases expert, told a recent White House briefing.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, at least 94 children ages 5 to 11 have died from COVID-19, more than 8,300 have been hospitalized and more than 5,000 have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the virus.

The “Babylone Electrifiée” exhibition featured the Disinformation installations “National Grid”, “The Analysis of Beauty” and the “Blackout” [Sound Mirrors] video, alongside “Strange Lines & Distances” by the artist Joshua Bonnetta...

We stopped at two popular redwood groves along the Avenue of the Giants, but I'm winding down the trees section of the trip, so I'm only going to post a couple of pictures from one.

The first grove was called the Rockefeller Grove, where we took a portion of a mile-long loop trail. The grove was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., the second-generation Standard Oil magnate who in 1917 was convinced by the Save the Redwoods League to buy the grove and donate it to the state of California. That grove became the heart of what would soon become Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and it's a big part of why there are still any redwoods left in California at all. Once Rockefeller got the ball rolling, California started preserving redwood groves as state parks all over the place.

Side Note: I don't have a sense of how well-known Rockefeller's contribution to the preservation of natural places is. He was responsible for the existence of a number of national parks, which you wouldn't think for an oil tycoon. Acadia exists solely because of Rockefeller, and he paid for significant pieces of the Great Smoky Mountains, Shenandoah, and Grand Teton. And he paid for museums at Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, and a bunch of other places. It seems that at one time, rich people used to do good things with their money besides buying disinformation web sites and tossing other rich people into outer space.

This picture comes from the Founders Grove, the second named redwood grove we visited. There are a number of notable trees at the Founders Grove, but the giant fallen log you see at the right is probably the most famous. That's the Dyerville Giant, which probably isn't the most creative name they could have come up with, but if you check the person on the trail next to the tree up ahead for scale, you'll see the name's accurate. The tree was first noticed by a UC-Berkeley forestry professor back in 1966, when it was still standing. It was around 1,600 years old, and it was at least 372 feet tall. That's taller than the tallest buildings in 15 states, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. It was, in fact, the tallest of all the known coast redwoods, but nobody actually realized that until they took exact measurements after it fell in 1991.

Unfortunately, the Dyerville Giant didn't die of natural causes. It was killed by one of its neighbors growing 50 yards away, which had been undermined by heavy rains during an unusually wet period. That tree fell into another tree, causing the second tree to lean. The lean in the second tree grew progressively worse over the course of a week, until it finally gave way in the middle of the night and crashed head-on into the Dyerville Giant. The force of the impact was enough to take the giant down, and the sound of it boomed through the neighboring landscape. The reports say that somebody living in a house a half-mile away thought a train had crashed.

This tree has been on the ground now for 31 years, and the decomposition process has barely begun. Remnants of this tree will remain here for centuries more.

Wikipedia Machu Pichu:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machu_Picchu

The vaunted Incan Empire lasted just 100 - 150 years before being destroyed by the conquistador-pirates despite its organised structure. However, it was just the last in 3,000 - 4,000 years of developing and skilled culture-civilisations in the west area of South America. Much of the Incan skill came from their predecessors, from the Tiahuanacan civilisation to its south, to the various coastal cultures, and north through today's Ecuador, and even influences from Central America.

The Pre-Columbian civilisations, remarkable especially in their arts and crafts, crop developments, and construction, are an inter-related evolution. Furthermore, much information has been lost over the centuries making evidenced insight important. A problem with understanding the Incan culture is that they didn't use written records. This has led to a great deal of interpretive imaginitus. A National Geographic of 1913 doubled the magazine's circulation by calling Machu Pichu the Lost City. Much more extreme propaganda has occurred since -- from alien theories to stone-softening chemicals. Rubbish. Today there is an extensive tourist-industry overlay which has improved the poverty life conditions for locals, and provided much valued interest, but can need a touch of verifying.

Machu Pichu has become globally iconic, to use the cliché. However, despite the propaganda and disinformation, it remains a remarkable statement of wonderful landform siting, cultural expression, and highly-skilled architecture and crafted-stonework.

Outstanding to experience.

I first saw Machu Pichu in 1967, pre-tourism. You can still see a couple of my mouldy old slides from that visit in my flickr Set/album South America '67:

peteshep/albums/72157604308081389

The often cloud-cloaked citadel of the Incas is built of rock, perched high at an altitude of 7, 710 ft on the narrow saddle of a mountain flanked by sheer drops to the Urubamba Valley below.

Machu Pichu is part of the Vilcabamba Batolite formation, a mass of igneous rock. The most common stone found in the region is a greyish-white Andesite-granite, a type of rock which contains high quantities of quartz, mica, and feldspar, but is reasonably easy to shape -- an excellent building material for the Incan masons.

The historic sanctuary is a cultural and natural area protected today by the Peruvian government. It harbours a large number of monuments linked to the Inca road network and is within a bio-diverse eco-system. The construction of Machu Pichu responded to the needs of the Inca state to have a religious, political, and administrative centre within a sacred space that can be considered link between the Andes and Amazon.

It represents a masterpiece of imaginative siting, architecture and engineering crafted in harmony with nature and is an important legacy of the Inca civilisation.

It was never sacked by the Spaniards as they failed to find it, nor was it lost to locals, but instead Machu Pichu was simply abandoned and left to nature to reclaim. The exquisite Inca stonework has withstood the ravages of time, but its use functions remain complex to understand.

Within the more-important broad picture, a visit highlights some of the many specific monuments such as the raised Intihuatuna --- "hitching stone of the sun" --- a carved rock probably used by the Incas as an indicator of the two solstices which they then used to plan agricultural cycles; the Sacred plaza -- flanked by the Temple of the Three Windows on the east, and the back of the principal Temple to the north --- this structure was probably used for ceremonial rites; skilled architecture -- fine craftsmanship involved in building the structures is evident -- they are made of many-sided stone blocks fitted together flawlessly without mortar; the Temple of the Sun -- Machu Pichu's only rounded building ---- it has two windows that may be aligned to the sun's summer and winter solstices; the guardhouse which forms a skyline landmark for visitors; the Temple of the Condor; water-fall fountains providing water distribution; agricultural terraces constructed to provide fertile shelves with drainage for crops; and so on. Some are detailed in my photo series.

Enjoy exploring.

In the face of UNESCO pressure, the Peruvian government is discussing ways to further limit traffic up the mountain to better preserve the ruins.

Michael Posner at the March 4 Press Conference following the Panel Discussion: "Internet Freedom: Promoting Human Rights in the Digital Age"

"Today we see the rapid advance of technology. Technologies can enhance free speech. This is really a moment where the internet is the town square of the 21st Century. So there are both great opportunities -- but also, as we’ve been discussing in the last hour -- a range of new risks and challenges that we face. Governments are both using technology to shut down the internet as we saw in Egypt. They’re also using technology to provide disinformation and to invade the personal privacy of activists, particularly in closed societies.

So the challenge for us I think as governments is both to encourage an open platform for information across borders, without constraints, that’s useful both for human rights, for innovation, for trade, for education, for a range of purpose. A neutral, open platform without government constraints, and at the same time to be mindful of and to be challenging those governments who try to use technology to interfere with the rights of their own people to speak freely, to communicate with one another, and to communicate with the world.

So we’re here in part to talk about the broad context, but also to work with governments at the United Nations to reinforce this message of an open internet and to look for ways to reinforce the notion that these are universal human rights and need to be protected."

Online propaganda by terrorist organisations and countries such as Russia aim to incite fear and divide Europe. MEPs debate this afternoon a report calling for stronger countermeasures and more collaboration between EU states. We talked to report author Anna Fotyga, a Polish member of the ECR group, about the impact of this disinformation and how to counter it. “We have to invest much more in these campaigns to fight radicalisation,” she said.

What impact have these propaganda efforts had? There are many theories about what happened in the US, but do they have the power to affect elections in Europe?

Much happened after the Russian aggression on Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. It was a wake-up call.

From our point of view in Central and Eastern Europe Russia started to distort information and influence media markets much earlier. It was a pure continuation of methods and tools used during the Cold War.

Of course it does have an influence on societies in the EU and on other countries. Surely the citizens of the United States of America are also the target of Russian propaganda with the use of many tools such as Russia Today.

Why has Islamic State been successful in its online efforts to reach out to young Muslims in Europe? How can Europe defend itself?

Most of the references to current events, or the ‘state of the union’ on the reverses of Roman coins were factual, or at least optimistically factual. Some times, though, coins were used coins as tools of disinformation. Two perfect examples in the 3rd Century are the AMMOR MVTVVS clasped-hands issues of Balbinus and Pupienus, and this CONCORDIAE AVGG sestertius depicting Caracalla and Geta clasping hands. In both cases the co-emperors represent their relationship as harmonious, when in reality they intensely disliked and mistrusted each other. In the case of Caracalla and Geta this hatred was so great that Caracalla eventually murdered Geta in the arms of their mother.

This sestertius is exceptional for the issue, being of the finest style and uncommonly well preserved. The spectacular portrait, showing Geta at his most mature, was engraved within months of his murder in December, 211 (not in February, 212, as was traditionally thought, but which has been disproven). The reverse scene is superbly balanced and well modeled. It depicts Caracalla, on the right, shaking hands with Geta, on the left as each are crowned by their patron deity, Hercules and Liber, respectively. The inscription declares the two are in harmonious agreement but in reality they hated each other so much that they were ready to divide the Empire just to keep their distance. The danger in dividing the empire was that civil war would result. At no point before this in Imperial history had the empire been so close to being torn apart without it actually occuring. With the specter of the civil war of 193-197 fresh in the mind of their mother, Julia Domna, she warned her sons: ”You may divide the empire, but you cannot divide your mother!” This reverse type is a precursor to designs common on aurelianiani and post-reform radiates of the 270s, 280s and 290s, and would fit comfortably in the repetoire of propaganda employed by Diocletian and Maximian, except that Liber would have been replaced with Jupiter, the patron of Diocletian.

Not everybody knows this but the CCHR is actually a front for the Church of Scientology cult. I was a little surprised to see this truck in the Québec streets.

Ce n'est pas évident au premier coup d'oeil mais le CCHR est en fait une façade pour l'église de Scientologie. J'ai été un peu surpris de voir que cette secte est encore active après toutes ces années de dénonciation d'abus...

Why Putin’s awkward Q&A may not be all it seemed

It seemed like the voices of angry Russians had suddenly broken through the Kremlin’s censors to embarrass Vladimir Putin at his annual question-and-answer session.

A batch of SMS messages apparently sent in by ordinary Russians on a live feed posed tough questions about the hard lives that most people lead amid soaring prices and crumbling infrastructure.

Some wondered if a rogue censor was letting them through.

Meanwhile, Kremlin propagandists suggested that the awkward questions were proof that Russians live in a free country, not the dictatorship that most analysts say Putin has created.

“This clearly shows that the organisers are trying to minimise any censorship,” said Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin speech writer.

However, the critical SMS messages, which went unanswered, appeared to show the Kremlin’s fingerprints.

There were eight to 12 messages, too many to claim that they had slipped past the censors. The language was also careful and steered clear of criticising the war in Ukraine.

One message in particular appeared to undermine what may have been a skillful Kremlin disinformation campaign. This was the only message that, at first glance, laid into the Russian leader.

“This question won’t be shown!” the message began.

“I’d like to know, when will our president pay attention to his own country? We’ve got no education, no healthcare. The abyss lies ahead...” it continued in clever language which actually begs Putin for help and predicts catastrophe if he doesn’t step in.

It felt like Putin, with his messiah complex and determination to deflect complaints away from his invasion of Ukraine, was talking to himself.

And in many ways, he was, with the questions possibly designed by the Kremlin to promote the idea of free speech in Russia to a domestic and international audience.

The Kremlin has banned most protests and any criticism of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine but it is still important to its strategists that ordinary Russians are presented with a veneer of democracy. A presidential election is planned for March and Putin wants to be loved by ordinary Russians.

This sort of subterfuge has occurred before.

In 2017, the Kremlin tried a similar tactic and also posted critical messages on the live feed throughout a question-and-answer session.

Then as now, the language was also stilted and focused on domestic policies.

Several people who worked on the 2017 programme told the BBC that the messages had been part of a Kremlin plot. They said that all the questions and SMS messages had been pre-approved.

“First some people take them away, then others take them away and so on right up to the presidential press service,” one of the sources said.

The Kremlin’s taste for subterfuge is well known. Putin’s question-and-answer session on Thursday may also have been a Kremlin disinformation project.

Sergueiew was one of many agents who double-crossed the German secret service during the Second World War. Between 1943 and 1945 Sergueiew’s contacts in the Abwehr believed her to be a loyal German spy. In reality, she was sending them deliberately misleading messages composed by the British secret service. As ‘Treasure’, Sergueiew did valuable work for MI5 yet her British spymasters began to suspect that she lacked discretion and commitment.

Nathalie Sergueiew was born in Russia in 1912. After studying in Paris she traveled around Europe, improving her mastery of several languages including German, French and English. In the mid-1930s she worked as a journalist in Germany, once interviewing Hermann Goering. At this time she began to admire Nazi ideology and personalities. However, when a journalist friend first approached her to work for the German intelligence service in 1937, she refused. By the time the war had started and she agreed to work for the Abwehr, she had already decided that her real loyalties lay with the Allies and she would do all she could to help them from within the German intelligence system.

Sergueiew met her Abwehr boss, Emil Kliemann, in Berlin and began to learn espionage skills such as secret ink writing, ciphers, radio telegraphy and how to identify different Allied uniforms and equipment. She hinted to her German employers that they should send her to England. At the same time she told the British authorities that she intended to double-cross. In 1943 she arrived in England and was immediately interrogated by MI5, who gave her the alias Treasure.

Secret Agents, Secret Armies: The D-Day Misfit Spies

Operation FORTITUDE involved a group of double agents feeding disinformation to the Germans but the group was an odd collection of criminals, playboys, party girls, and a woman obsessed with her dog.

Nathalie “Lily” Sergueiev (1912-1950), was the one agent who came closest to destroying Operation FORTITUDE, and her motivation was to betray MI-5 because of her dog. Codenamed TREASURE (ironically because she was a nightmare to deal with), Sergueiev was a Frenchwoman of White Russian origins. She travelled between England and neutral Portugal, feeding information to the Abwehr. Unfortunately her beloved dog “Babs” was subject to quarantine rules and was left behind in Gibraltar, which provoked a sort of strike by TREASURE in December 1943, where she refused to keep sending messages about false troop build-ups opposite the Pas De Calais. Even worse, news arrived that “Babs” had died and Sergueiev believed the British had murdered her dog. On May 17, 1944, weeks before the planned invasion, Sergueiev told her case officer, Mary Sherer, that Sergueiev has a “control signal” given to her by her German case officer to show she was broadcasting under duress (control signal could be anything that appears to be a minor error or added letter that signals the agent has been captured and to distrust the signal.) Robertson and Sherer agonized over what to do with TREASURE and took the calculated risk that their unhinged agent would not carry out her threat. Fortunately, no control signal was sent and after the D-Day landing, TREASURE was retired.

I Worked Alone. Diary of a Double Agent in World War II Europe

M. Kathryn Barbier, Editor

During World War II Nathalie “Lily” Sergueiew, a woman of mystery, confidently seduced the German Intelligence Service into employing her as a spy against their British enemy. Little did they know that this striking woman – who turned heads when she walked into a room with her little dog Babs – was playing them and would work with their enemy against them. Her diary chronicles her months-long journey to becoming a double agent for the British under the code name Treasure. From the moment she conceived the idea of becoming a double agent, Lily faced challenges on two fronts: first, she had to convince the Germans to ask her to spy for them; second, she needed the British to believe her story, to take her seriously, and to employ her in the role that she was destined to perform. Only then could she begin the perilous work of helping free her homeland – France – from the German occupier. I Worked Alone: Diary of a Double Agent in World War II Europe tells the story of Lily’s journey to accomplish her challenging goal in her own words.

Canada 2021 - Many uf Canada's hundred year old plus historic Christian Churches fall victim to arsonists.

They're Burning down the Churches.

Canada Day July 1st 2021, The traditional proud and celebratory Canadian national holiday, aka Canada Day, has been interrupted this year by a disturbing string of violent acts and massive property destruction. Arsonists have attacked defenseless Christian Churches causing severe damage and in many cases the burning to the ground of 100 year old historic churches and their contents that include irreplaceable documents and invaluable historic artifacts .

And the list is growing..

A prayer ,

“If this fire was deliberately set, we ask for you to forgive whoever set it, and heal them, and bring them into your family with us, so that they may learn of your love for them, the same love that you have overwhelmed us with in our lives,”

No offer as yet by the NDP Liberal Government to help rebuild the burned Christian churches nor any sincere attempt by them to apprehend and charge the perpetrator(s) ?

A new study reveals that arson attacks on Canadian churches have more than doubled since 2021, with most cases linked to public reaction over reports of unmarked graves at former residential schools-not anti-religious sentiment. Despite nearly 100 churches damaged or destroyed, fewer than 4% of arsonists have been charged, leaving communities searching for answers and healing. www.facebook.com/100069681242082/posts/978055547860478/?_rdr

Although the vast majority of residents in cities across Canada like Halifax, Montreal, Victoria, Hamilton and Calgary had wanted to just simply retain their history by just leaving local statues and artifacts alone, unfortunately, these historical artifacts were shown total disrespect and disregard when either destroyed by lawless vigilante mobs while police stood by and watched, or else hastily torn down and then hidden away by order of local Mayors and council without public consultation or permission ? Many other historic Statues such as Queen Elizabeth ll, Queen Victoria, and even Captain Cook were also mutilated or torn down by lawless vigilante mobs ?

Wikipedia promotes itself as "The Free Encyclopedia that anyone can edit." And that is precisely the problem! Anyone can, and anyone does.

And, it's not limited to minor matters, either.

Verification, validation and authentication is exclusively limited to items that can be presently found on Internet databases. For example, if there is a book which is not published online, and which is cited as a source, then it's quite simple to cite the book title, it's author, ISBN number and let it go at that. The problem occurs when someone attempts to authenticate the citation and does not have access to that source.

There is an abysmal lack of uniformity in language, grammar and spelling. The styles of each article vary exceedingly, so much that it's not uncommon to find one article on a related subject in a distinctly different tenor, tone and appearance.

Subjects often have inane, mundane and tedious details of such infinitesimal detail that it detracts from the main article... in the opening paragraph. Naturally, the supply of such scrutinizingly painful detail is done in an attempt to demonstrate expertise, and therefore lend substantial credence. However, it has the opposite effect, arouses suspicion, and almost immediately bores readers.

While simultaneously eschewing "original research," the same level of scrutiny is casually avoided in numerous other articles, particularly those which cite sources.

So-called "edit wars" are not uncommon over trivial detail - such as adherence to the "community guidelines" as they pertain to "editing" practice. Anonymous users are encouraged! to edit articles with complete abandon... and they do, albeit that their IP addresses are displayed after such edits, if they are not "registered" members of the site.

Details on related articles are inconsistent - as evidenced here. And, in one instance, I was amazed to learn that (according to information found on Wikipedia) there are AT LEAST four men in different nations whom all lay claim to have invented the washing machine - all at different years, and all whom knew nothing of each other. How peculiar is THAT!?

Perhaps the most fascinatingly telling (and damning) indictment of Wikipedia was the fiasco involving John Seigenthaler, Sr., whom has since deceased. As one of journalism's most scrupulous, and long-time journalists, editors and publisher of the Tennessean newspaper in Nashville (and others, including USA Today), he had the courage to investigate, tell the truth, hold and promote unpopular positions, and be confidants of Presidents and others.

It was cited on Wikipedia that he - as a former assistant to Robert Kennedy - may have been involved in the assassination of RFK, and that of his brother, President John F. Kennedy.

The false entry read in part:

"John Seigenthaler Sr. was the assistant to Attorney General Robert Kennedy in the early 1960's. For a brief time, he was thought to have been directly involved in the Kennedy assassinations of both John, and his brother, Bobby. Nothing was ever proven. John Seigenthaler moved to the Soviet Union in 1971, and returned to the United States in 1984. He started one of the country's largest public relations firms shortly thereafter."

While the claim was utterly false (the only truth was that he was an assistant to RFK), it remained on the Wikipedia website for FOUR MONTHS before the website's founder, Huntsville, Alabama native Jimmy Wales, agreed to have it removed.

Mr. Sigenthaler, Sr. wrote an Op-Ed in USA Today of that experience, which was published 29 November 2005 under the title of "A false Wikipedia 'biography'". In part he wrote that, "I am interested in letting many people know that Wikipedia is a flawed and irresponsible research tool."

Sadly, increasingly, in the years since that debacle, Wikipedia remains a complete and utter fraud, waste of time, space and energy.
