American Oystercatcher

The American Oystercatchers are a group of waders forming the family Haematopodidae, which has a single genus, Haematopus. They are found on coasts worldwide apart from the Polar Regions and some tropical regions of Africa and South East Asia. The exception to this is the Eurasian Oystercatcher and the South Island Oystercatcher, both of which breed inland, far inland in some cases. In the past there has been a great deal of confusion as to the species limits, with discrete populations of all black oystercatchers being afforded specific status but pied oystercatchers being considered one single species.

The name Oystercatcher was coined by Mark Catesby in 1731 as a common name for the North American species H. Palliatus, described as eating oysters. Yarrell in 1843 established this as the preferred term, replacing the older name Sea Pie.

With all the excitement of the salmon run and all the hundreds of Bald Eagles around this Steller's Jay was still to be seen discretely along the shore looking for food. When it left it could not leave quietly it had to let out it's very recognizable calls.

This is an attempt to capture the milky way from Clingmans Dome in the Smoky Mountains. You can see it faintly running from the lower left, diagonally to the upper right. The city lights of Cherokee and Bryson city can be see on the horizon. The small discrete points of light at the bottom of the photo are from homes, camps, cars and cabins along Fontana Lake.

My night sky app told me that if I waited until 3:30 AM I would get a much brighter and vibrant milky way. But the allure of warm bed back at my campsite, an hour and a half away, won the "should I stay or should I go now" argument.

Alas, when I got back to my campsite just before midnight, I found my tent, with my warm bed inside, in a tattered, broken heap about 50 feet from where I left it. Winds had ripped through the Cades Cove campground and thrown my tent, chairs, and kitchen, helter skelter.

With zero regard to my neighbors I went noisily about throwing it all into the back of the SUV and drove out to Townsend TN where at around 1:00 AM, I checked into the Best Western.

Upon awakening, after one day of a four day trip, I got in the car and headed home.

Apologies to Lee McCain who was supposed to meet me the next day for a couple of days photographing in the National Park. I was looking forward to your company and conversation Lee and the Steak and Beer Pancakes breakfast. I'm shopping for a new tent - one that deals with high winds - even as I type this. We'll do this again.

And on a technical note. I slightly missed the focus on this shot. I thought I prefocused on infinity prior to the light disappearing but I obviously missed it or bumped it. Note to self: Tape your focus ring down Tony, so it doesn't get moved and you miss the shot.

Alligator mississippiensis at the Viera Wetlands, trying to be discrete, something that's not easy at 6+ feet long.

Zac naturally does not exercise discretion in everything he is. Here, he does otherwise, as well as being discrete.

We stopped here at the glacial moraine to look around at the ice formations and to prepare for crossing the glaciers to the east coast of Spitsbergen. This was the only place on the trip that had any sort of 'facilities' if you get my drift.

Somewhere to be discrete!

One of our guides was female and she did mention to my wife that these expeditions were easier for the boys, nevertheless, one of the girls wrestled with her snowmobile suite and then probably enjoyed the rest of the trip more than the other girls.

'Bear in mind' there is always someone with a gun watching you :-)

Crossing the glaciers was something else.

We were told we were heading into a white out - low cloud/fog.

We were instructed to follow closely the snowmobile in front and do not lose it. If we do lose it, do NOT move, "I will find you" if you move I will never be able to find you again!

Basically we followed a guy who had a route programmed into his GPS navigation, we stuck to each other like glue with about ten meters between us. At times visibility was down to less than fifty meters and I lost sight of the guide a few vehicles ahead. It was like driving through a tunnel of white.

It was like playing a real life computer game where the only goal no matter how they twisted and turned, was to stick to the vehicle in front. Surreal doesn't describe it at 50km/hr.

Next time you are on a plane flying through cloud, imagine what the pilots view is.

I'm not sure of the name of the first glacier we crossed, the one in this picture, but we ended up on the Königsbergbreen and this led us down to the sea ice in the Bay of Mohnbukta.

In the silence of the night, the wood mouse creeps unobtrusively through the damp undergrowth, tail erect as a sign of vigilance. Dingy Skipper / erynnis tages. Derbyshire. 18/05/16.

When the rain stopped mid-afternoon I walked on a local brownfield site which holds a small colony of Dingy Skippers. Inadvertently I disturbed this one, which flew a short distance and perched up on a dead Knapweed head. It remained there for at least 10 minutes but showed no attempt to wrap its wings around the seed head in typical roosting position. The encounter afforded me the opportunity to look at it closely and make a series of images.

Without warning it suddenly took flight again and dropped down to this twig, closer to the ground. Immediately it drew its forewings back over its hind wings and attempted to wrap them around each side of the twig. This resembled more of a roosting position but because of the structure of the twig, it couldn't achieve a tight 'wrap'.

The butterfly's lethargy, reluctance to fly far and attempt to roost can be attributed to the time of day and cool conditions I think. After quickly making a few more images I left it in this position. I imagine that in time it would have moved again to a more favourable roosting perch (seed head) which it would have wrapped its body tightly around.

A simple portrait which I drew to accompany a quote from the memories of king Farouk published in the Empire News newspaper between December 1952 to February1953, parts of which have been posted in an internet site. It is the only published statement of king Farouk who has been otherwise silent and discrete.

I have only the few below remarks:

1- The king was rightly convinced that there are Egyptians who were ready to sacrifice their lives to keep his throne and even to protect his life and his family. What is called a (white revolution) was a bloody fight which king Farouk witnessed in Ras Altin palace. Several people were shoot at his sight ,,,a suffering which he could not obviously bear for too long.

2- He was also well aware that the plotters did not represent the Egyptian people , nor did they even represent the army whose leaders were arrested by the plotters and of which many units remained loyal to king Farouk till his departure.

3- The king, not free of human weakness himself, had terrible fear for his family and for his new born son. Most unfortunately king Farouk lived the illusion that his life and his family’s were saved by the American ambassador, not being aware that the USA was a main player in this military coup.

4- There remains the above qouted remark which king Farouk most intelligently made: I know that my story as I write it will be banned from Egypt. Phrases will be taken from it and distorted. But I know that whole copies will get through somehow.

This is exactly what happened. The memories of king Farouk were published selectively in Egypt since 1952 till the present day. The original and complete version was never published in Arabic and it is nowadays nowhere to be found.

I am looking eagerly for the complete version which you believed it will reach us,,,our beloved king.

An upper level trough kicked off thunderstorms during late afternoon near Torrington, Wyoming and moved slowly to Kimbel-Sydney, Nebraska after dark. Lightning was nearly continuous. Then shortly after a started my timelapse with the storm about 60 miles to my east, another cluster of storms formed over the Pawnee Nat'l Grasslands over northeastern Colorado. I switched to this complex to my southeast (45 to 60 miles away), and captured some discrete lightning bolts.

The Small Copper is a fast flying butterfly that, once settled, is unmistakable with its bright copper-coloured forewings. It is a widespread species and a familiar and welcome sight for many naturalists throughout the summer months. This butterfly occurs in discrete colonies throughout the British Isles, but is absent from mountainous areas and far north-west Scotland, the Outer Hebrides and Shetland. Most colonies are fairly small, with just a few adults being seen on the wing at any one time.

The only representative of its species in North America, this small arboreal bird merges with the bark of trees. He searches for his food by climbing along the trees while spinning around the trunk.

Bird very discrete and difficult to spot, it prefers the shade to the light, this is the first time I managed to photograph it appropriately.

PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.

Bernardo Zenale (Treviglio, 1463/1468- Milan, 1526) - Saint Jerome (1500-1510) - tempera and oil on panel - diameter 40 cm. - Poldi Pezzoli Museum, Milan

Quest'opera è commentata insieme a Sant'Ambrogio.

This work is commented together with Sant'Ambrogio. The roundels, despite the numerous retouches on the pictorial surface, are in fair condition. Zenale depicts the two Doctors of the Church - the title given to the greatest theologians of ancient Christianity - with their traditional attributes: Ambrose wears the crosier and the bishop's mitre and holds the three-bladed whip, a symbol of his commitment to the fight against the Arian heresy. Jerome wears a red robe and a cardinal's hat and holds an open book, a reminder of his work as a translator of the Bible. The representation of the four major Latin theologians in roundels (Jerome and Ambrose are usually flanked by Augustine and Gregory) is very common in Italian art and Milanese painting, both on wood and in fresco, has left numerous examples, as demonstrated by the four contemporary paintings of the Lombard school of about 1480 owned by the Poldi Pezzoli Museum. In the faces marked by age, the wrinkles express an intimate tension; the light stops to scrutinize the intense faces, their anatomy, the knuckles of the hand holding the whip and then lingers on the coats and headdresses. Some details are treated with particular attention, such as Ambrose's crumpled collar, the shadow that thickens in Jerome's hood, the leafy pages of the book and the soft, grayish beards with pearly reflections. Zenale was one of the few artists, together with Bramantino, able to update the tradition of fifteenth-century Lombard painting, anchored in the ways of Vincenzo Foppa, on the novelties brought to Milan by Bramante and Leonardo. If, in fact, the austerity of the two figures recalls the severe characters of the Brescian artist, a plastic strength emerges in the roundels that derives from Bramante and a new psychological introspection, of Leonardo's echo. The two Doctors date back to a moment contemporary or slightly preceding the Polyptych of Cantù, of which the Museum conserves the right side panel with Saints Stephen and Anthony of Padua.
