Disaster Recovery: School Districts in Socially Vulnerable Communities Faced Heightened Challenges after Recent Natural Disasters
The U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and the Western Area Power Administration advance crew teamed up, Sept. 26, to begin repairs on a 34.5-kilovolt transmission line from St. Thomas’ Randolph Harley power plant. Transmission lines are like the backbone of an electrical system transporting energy longer distances before the voltage is stepped down for distribution lines to deliver the power to homes and businesses. The advance team is assisting the Authority line crews in energy restoration as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mission assignment to repair, restore and rebuild the islands following Hurricanes Maria and Irma.
