Justin Bieber blocks One Direction from making a return trip to No. 1 on Billboard’s Social 50 chart, as he keeps the British/Irish group at bay at No. 2 for a third straight week.
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist pageviews, song plays and reactions.
The Social 50’s No. 1 slot isn’t the only title Bieber denied One Direction from earning in the past seven days. During the chart week, One Direction — in a widely-socialized stunt — encouraged fans to watch their new music video for “Kiss You” in the hopes of breaking VEVO’s one-day view count record. However, the group fell just short of the record, held by — you guessed it — Justin Bieber.
According to VEVO, with 10.4 million views in 24 hours ending on Jan. 8, “Kiss You” just missed breaking the record held by Bieber’s “Beauty and a Beat” (10.6 million views on Oct. 13, 2012).
Fueling the record attempt was One Direction’s Niall Horan, who Tweeted on Jan. 8, “#kissyouonvevo #letsbreak11million!,” hours before the 24-hour mark ended, rallying fans to watch (and rewatch) “Kiss You.” The track, though not yet officially promoted to U.S. radio stations, has re-entered at No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week.
It has sold 207,000 digital downloads to date in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan.
The Justin Bieber vs. One Direction VEVO rivalry began back in May of 2012, when Bieber’s “Boyfriend” took the VEVO 24-hour record from Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been.” Then on Sept. 27, One Direction’s “Live While We’re Young” squeaked past Bieber’s record with 8.34 million in a day, only to be passed by Bieber’s “Beauty and a Beat” (featuring Nicki Minaj) once again a month later.
Check out the timeline below for a history of VEVO 24-hour view record holders starting in 2012:
Jan. 21, 2012 - Nicki Minaj, “Stupid Hoe” - 4.8 million views
May 1, 2012 - Rihanna, “Where Have You Been” - 4.9 million views
May 4, 2012 - Justin Bieber, “Boyfriend” - 8 million views
Sept. 21, 2012 - One Direction, “Live While We’re Young” - 8.34 million views
Oct. 13, 2012 - Justin Bieber featuring Nicki Minaj, “Beauty and a Beat” - 10.6 million views
Despite all of the VEVO-related buzz, One Direction holds at No. 2 on the Social 50 chart despite a 34% gain in weekly activity to their VEVO channel, with “Kiss You’s” success and preceding teaser videos earning a whopping 38 million views during the week. A 15% rise in Facebook reaction gave way to a 154,000 increase in Facebook likes during the week. 191,000 Twitter followers added contributed to their overall fan base increase as well.
In other Social 50 news … David Bowie debuts at No. 35 after surprising the world with a new single (“Where Are We Now?”) and the announcement of a new album, “The Next Day” on his 66th birthday, Jan. 7.
The single became immediately available to stream on his new Web site, as did its music video, which garnered 1 million VEVO views since its debut. That contributed to a 240% jump in weekly activity to his channel, while his online fan base grew by over 40,000 fans. Bowie additionally received over 470,000 views to his Wikipedia page, a 400% increase compared to the previous week.
Bowie’s new album is due out in the U.S. on March 12.
Back in the top 10: Taylor Swift remains steady at No. 4 while Britney Spears and Rihanna trade places (the former moves 5-3 while the latter dips 3-5). Bruno Mars holds fast at No. 6 while Beyonce rises to break the top 10 (15-7), captivating the Web’s attention with the release of her GQ magazine cover photo. Selena Gomez and Katy Perry remain steady in the Nos. 8 and 9 positions respectively, while PSY continues his downward trend to dip 7-10.

La Chicharra - the Cicada, or "Rainbird" as some call it here since it's calls are the loudest on the hottest days.... just before the rains start in Mexico.
June 13, the day of San Antonio, is the oficial start of our rainy season here and sure enough it starterd to rain on the 12 June this year ((:
The Cicada, Cicadoidea, an insect with large eyes wide apart on the head and usually transparent, well-veined wings. There are about 2,500 species of cicada around the world, and many remain unclassified. Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are among the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable acoustic talents. Cicadas are sometimes colloquially called "locusts", although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. They are also known as "jar flies". Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs. In parts of the southern Appalachian Mountains in the United States, they are known as "dry flies" because of the dry shell that they leave behind.
Cicada song
Male cicadas have loud noisemakers called "timbals" on the sides of the abdominal base. Their "singing" is not the stridulation (where two structures are rubbed against one another) of many other familiar sound-producing insects like crickets: the timbals are regions of the exoskeleton that are modified to form a complex membrane with thin, membranous portions and thickened "ribs". Contracting the internal timbal muscles produces a clicking sound as the timbals buckle inwards. As these muscles relax, the timbals return to their original position producing another click. The interior of the male abdomen is substantially hollow to amplify the resonance of the sound. A cicada rapidly vibrates these membranes, and enlarged chambers derived from the tracheae make its body serve as a resonance chamber, greatly amplifying the sound. They modulate their noise by wiggling their abdomens toward and away from the tree that they are on. Additionally, each species has its own distinctive song.
Average temperature of the natural habitat for this species is approximately 29 °C (84 °F). During sound production the temperature of the tymbal muscles were found to be slightly higher. Cicadas like heat and do their most spirited singing during the hotter hours of a summer day. Although only males produce the cicadas' distinctive sound, both sexes have tympana, which are membranous structures used to detect sounds and thus the cicadas' equivalent of ears. Males can disable their own tympana while calling.
Some cicadas produce sounds up to 120 dB (SPL) "at close range", among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds.[9] This is especially notable as their song is technically loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss in humans, should the cicada sing just outside the listener's ear (unlikely). Conversely, some small species have songs so high in pitch that the noise is inaudible to humans.[10] Species have different mating songs to ensure they attract the appropriate mate. It can be difficult to determine which direction(s) cicada song is coming from, because the low pitch carries well and because it may, in fact, be coming from many directions at once, as cicadas in various trees all make noise at once.
In addition to the mating song, many species also have a distinct distress call, usually a somewhat broken and erratic sound emitted when an individual is seized. A number of species also have a courtship song, which is often a quieter call and is produced after a female has been drawn by the calling song.

Justice Crew And Johnny Ruffo Support One Direction; Hordern Pavilion, Moore Park, Sydney, Australia
Today One Direction mania broke loose at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, but credit where its due to both Justice Crew and Johnny Ruffo for adding extra substance to the style with today's young hunk musical performances.
Friday 13th was lucky for about 3,000 Australian fans who got into the venue, and we think Justice Crew and Mr Ruffo helped British boy band One Direction make some of their own luck.
There were lots of smiles all around and body language directed at the teen girl audience to send them into swoon mania.
When JC and Ruffo had done their thing, it was time for the Main Event - One Direction, and they didn't disappoint (the teen fans that were falling over themselves even before the show began).
One Direction - fans attention in One Direction daze globally...
One Direction performed also their hit single What Makes You Beautiful on the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, which resulted in a star-studded audience sing-a-long.
One Direction’s debut album, Up All Night, entered the charts at No.1 in 13 countries and has been certified triple platinum in Ireland, double platinum in the UK and Australia, and platinum in New Zealand. In six months they have sold more than 4.2 million records worldwide.
Well Wishes To All Artists...
We wish all of the performing artists well with their developing careers, and they shouldn't need too much luck, with all the airplay they are currently enjoying on Sydney, Melborne and Brisbane FM radio. That's showbiz.
Australian media, marketing and music industry experts will be watching and listening closely, as all three of today's musical entities continue to strive to reach the top of the charts.
Will the boy bands stay together, or should we expect a break up or break out performer, sooner, or later - stay tuned to this station.

A postcard bearing no publisher's name which was posted in Palmers Green on the 7th. July 1908.
It was addressed to:
T. Davies Esq.,
North Lodge,
Rusthall.
Tunbridge Wells.
North Lodge is on Langton Road. It served as the north gatehouse to Nevill Park. It was Grade II Listed on the 7th. June 1974.
Rusthall is a village located approximately 2 miles from the spa town of Tunbridge Wells in Kent. The village grew up around a large property called 'Rusthall' which was located on Rusthall Common.
The message on the back of the card was as follows:
"I hope to come home on Wed.
by the same train as mother &
D., but I don't know which yet.
Have been over to Enfield today,
& go up to London with E. tomorrow.
Much love from Grace".
Battersea Park
Battersea Park is a 200-acre (83-hectare) green space at Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth in London. It is situated on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Chelsea, and was opened in 1858.
The park occupies marshland reclaimed from the Thames as well as land formerly used for market gardens.
The park is Grade II* listed.
-- The Early Years of the Park
Prior to 1846 the area now covered by the park was known as Battersea fields, a popular spot for duelling. On the 21st. March 1829, the Duke of Wellington and the Earl of Winchelsea met on Battersea fields to settle a matter of honour. When it came time to fire, the Duke aimed his duelling pistol wide and Winchelsea fired his into the air. Winchelsea later wrote the Duke a groveling apology.
Separated from the river by a narrow raised causeway, the fields consisted of low, fertile marshes intersected by streams and ditches, with the chief crops being carrots, melons, lavender (all the way up to Lavender Hill) and the famous ‘Battersea Bunches’ of asparagus.
Running along the riverside from the fields were industrial concerns and wharves, including a pottery, copper works, lime kiln, chemical works, and, increasingly, railways. The site of Battersea Power Station was partly occupied by the famously bawdy Red House Tavern, patronised by Charles Dickens.
In 1845, spurred partly by the local vicar and partly by Thomas Cubitt, the builder and developer, whose yards were across the river in the still marshy and undeveloped area of Pimlico, a bill was submitted to Parliament to form a royal park of 320 acres.
The Act was passed in 1846, and £200,000 was promised for the purchase of the land. The Commission for Improving the Metropolis acquired 320 acres of Battersea Fields, of which 198 acres became Battersea Park, opened in 1858, and the remainder was let on building leases.
The park was laid out by Sir James Pennethorne between 1846 and 1864, although the park which was opened in 1858 varied somewhat from Pennethorne's original vision.
The park’s success depended on the successful completion of the Chelsea Bridge, declared open in 1858 by Queen Victoria. In her honour, the road alongside the eastern edge of the Park was called Victoria Road, linked to Queen's Road by Victoria Circus (now Queen's Circus).
Prince of Wales Road (now Prince of Wales Drive) was laid out along the southern boundary, and Albert Bridge Road constructed along the western side. The park came under the management of the newly formed London County Council in 1889.
The park hosted the first football game played under the rules of the recently formed Football Association on the 9th. January 1864. The members of the teams were chosen by the President of the FA (A. Pember) and the Secretary (E.C. Morley), and included many well-known footballers of the day.
From the 1860's, the park was home to the leading amateur football team Wanderers F.C., winners of the first FA Cup, in 1872. One team they are known to have played at the park was Sheffield F.C., the world's oldest football team, in the 1860's.
-- The Later Years of Battersea Park
In 1924, the 24th East Surrey Division War Memorial by Eric Kennington was unveiled by Field Marshal Lord Plumer and the Anglican Bishop of Southwark Cyril Garbett. It commemorates the over 10,000 men killed or listed as "missing presumed dead" whilst serving with the 24th. East Surrey Division. The memorial is now Grade II* listed.
During both wars, anti-aircraft guns and barrage balloons were installed in the park to help protect London from enemy air raids. Shelters were dug, part of the park was turned over to allotments for much needed vegetables, and a pig farm was also set up. Maintenance of the park was reduced as the war effort took priority.
In 1951 the northern parts of the park were transformed into the "Pleasure Gardens" as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. As well as a new water-garden and fountains, new features included a "Tree-Walk", which consisted of a series of raised wooden walkways linked by tree house-like platforms suspended between the branches of a number of trees.
Popular attractions included the Guinness Clock, designed by Jan Le Witt and George Him, and the Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Branch Railway.
-- Battersea Funfair and the Big Dipper Disaster
Another part of the transformation was the addition in 1951 of Battersea Funfair, with roller coasters, swings, roundabouts and other attractions.
The funfair's most spectacular ride was a roller coaster called The Big Dipper, which opened in 1951. It was of wooden construction, and suffered a major fire in 1970.
It was closed after five children were killed and 13 injured in an accident on the 30th. May 1972 when one of the trains broke loose from its haulage rope, rolling backwards, the emergency rollback brake having failed.
Despite the efforts of the brakeman, the train gathered speed, and the back carriage jumped the rails and crashed through a barrier, with the other two carriages crashing on top of it.
It was the worst accident in the history of theme parks. In the subsequent inquiry, prosecutors described the ride as a 'death trap', citing dozens of flaws and safety concerns.
The Independent newspaper published a story in 2015 recalling the accident, prompted by an accident at Alton Towers in which 16 people were injured, four seriously. Recalling the 1972 accident, Carolyn Adamczyk, a passenger on the ride during the accident, said:
"As soon as we started shooting backwards,
everything went into slow motion... I turned
around and saw the brake man desperately
trying to put the brake on, but it wasn’t working.
Most of the carriages didn’t go around the bend,
one detached and went off the side through a
wooden hoarding. People were groaning and
hanging over the edge. It was awful."
In April 2022 BBC News published a video article about survivors of the disaster campaigning for a permanent memorial. The footage includes the rollercoaster in operation as well as modern views of the site where it stood, and mentions a theory that the wood from the demolished coaster is buried under Battersea Park.
Three men were charged with manslaughter, and a committal hearing was started at Wandsworth Magistrates' Court on the 26th. February 1973. The court heard that, after a fire had damaged the ride in 1970, second-hand stock, more than fifty years old, had been bought to replace it.
The brake on the replacement train had not operated when the rope broke, allowing it to run backwards. Additionally, the structure, including the pedestrian emergency walkway, was in a rotted and unsafe condition so that one victim who survived the initial impact fell through the handrail to her death.
The manager of the ride and its inspecting engineer were committed for trial, and after a lengthy hearing at the Old Bailey, on the 20th. November 1973 both men were acquitted.
After the accident, the roller coaster was closed and dismantled. With the funfair's lack of a main attraction its use soon declined, leading to its closure in 1974. Very little remains now to even suggest that a funfair once stood on the site.
-- Other Features of Battersea Park
The site of the fun fair was levelled and became a site for travelling fairs and exhibitions, and is the site of Battersea Evolution, formerly the Battersea Park Events Arena, which hosts exhibitions, conferences and Christmas parties.
The park is home to a small children's zoo, a boating lake, a bandstand, and all-weather outdoor sporting facilities including tennis courts, a running track and football pitches. Four West London hockey teams use the all-weather Astroturf pitches.
In the centre of the park is Pump House Gallery, which is housed in a four-story grade I listed Victorian tower. It is owned by Wandsworth Council.
On the western side there are two cricket pitches, home to the King's Road Cricket & Social Club. The club, whose members wear distinctive orange caps, can be seen playing on Saturdays and Sundays.
The park is the site of the London Peace Pagoda, erected in 1985. A Buddhist monk looks after the pagoda on a daily basis.
A replica of the bronze statue of a dog that was the focal point of the historic vivisection-related Brown Dog affair was erected here in 1985. It was moved in 1994 to the Woodland Walk, near the Old English Garden.
In 2002 to 2004 the park underwent a £11 million refurbishment funded in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and was re-opened on the 2nd. June 2004 by Prince Philip.
In 2007, a Dog Walk of Fame was inaugurated in the park.
In 2011, a sculpture commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, 'After 9/11', was unveiled by the then-Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
A narrow strip along the eastern edge of the park and two smaller nearby areas have been designated the Battersea Park Nature Areas Local Nature Reserve, with an area of three hectares. They have a variety of woodland bird species, including blackcap and bullfinch. There are 20 species of butterfly and several of stag beetle.
-- Battersea Park in the Media
The park featured in Petula Clark's 1954 single "Meet Me In Battersea Park", co-authored by Clark's father, Leslie, and her accompanist, Joe "Mr Piano" Henderson and David Valentine (the pen name of David Lavender). It was the title of a 2001 boxed set focusing on this early part of Petula's career.
The park featured in the 1960's films "Gorgo", "The Wrong Arm of the Law" and "The Day the Earth Caught Fire", and in a 1991 episode of Mr. Bean entitled "Mr Bean Goes to Town". Also, Jim Henson's company filmed the musical number "Couldn't We Ride?" for "The Great Muppet Caper" at the park; it was there that the movie began filming in September 1980.
The cafe and bandstand featured in several scenes shot for the 1998 British comedy "Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence".
The first 50 seconds of the video for One Direction's single "One Thing" were filmed in the former Festival Gardens area of the park.

Rihanna's "Unapologetic" sold nearly 100,000 copies last week to debut at No. 1 on yesterday's new U.K. album chart. But the real sales story of the week, and the year, came in the less-publicised compilation chart, where "Now! That's What I Call Music 83" sold 295,000 copies, the highest tally for any album in 2012. Singles-wise, English pop hitmaker Olly Murs upstaged Girls Aloud's reunion by beating them to No. 1 with "Troublemaker," featuring Flo Rida.
Rihanna thus equals the record for a female artist of three consecutive chart-toppers, jointly held by Madonna, Norah Jones and Eva Cassidy. The Barbadian superstar first hit the U.K. album summit with "Good Girl Gone Bad" in 2007, but only reached No. 9 with the 2009 follow-up "Rated R." Her quickfire three-in-a-row sequence began in 2010 with "Loud" and continued with last year's "Talk That Talk." On the new singles chart, she falls 9-10 with "Diamonds," but enters at No. 36 with "Right Now," featuring David Guetta, No. 63 with "Nobody's Business" featuring Chris Brown, and No. 75 with "Half Of Me."
One Direction's "Take Me Home" fell to No. 2 after last week's best-selling debut, with 72,000 new sales, in a new top ten featuring four more new entries. Their Syco labelmates, female pop act Little Mix, arrived at No. 3 with "DNA" on 53,000 sales, with Led Zeppelin's "Celebration Day" in at No. 4 (50,000 units) to extend the erstwhile rock giants' span of U.K. top ten albums to 43 years, since their self-titled debut reached No. 6 in 1969.
A new deluxe edition of Michael Bublé's "Christmas" album, which already has U.K. sales of 1.3 million from a worldwide total of 7m according to Reprise/Warner Music, took the festive set back into the chart at No. 5. Bublé is due to play no fewer than ten nights at London's 02 Arena next summer. Scottish vocalist Susan Boyle's "Standing Ovation - The Greatest Songs" opened at No. 7 to give Syco Music a third top ten title of the week.
The "Now! 83" set debuted at No. 1 on the compilation chart only four weeks after the 82nd volume completed a 13-week run at the top. The new hits collection's huge 295,000 opening tally was well ahead of the 267,000 for its predecessor.
2009 "X Factor" contestant Murs, now the anchor for its companion show "Xtra Factor," is proving a durable chart act, now taking his total of No. 1 singles to four. "Troublemaker" follows 2010's "Please Don't Let Me Go" and last year's "Heart Skips A Beat" and "Dance With Me Tonight," and the singer's third album, "Right Place Right Time," is released in the U.K. today (Monday). The single sold 121,000 copies last week, easily outdoing Girls Aloud's much-vaunted return at No. 2 with "Something New," which is in aid of the BBC's Children In Need appeal and sold 70,000 units.
One Direction's "Little Things" fell 1-3 in a top ten that featured one other arrival, Alicia Keys' "Girl On Fire" at No. 5. London quartet Rudimental followed their "Feel The Love" No. 1 with a No. 14 debut for "Not Giving In" and Columbia/Sony's release of AC/DC's entire catalog on iTunes gave the Anglo-Australian rock veterans a considerable chart presence. "Back In Black" made its singles chart debut, 32 years after its first release, at No. 27, with "Highway To Hell" at No. 40, "You Shook Me All Night Long" No. 42, "Thunderstruck" No. 42 and "Whole Lotta Rosie" No. 68. The new "Live At River Plate" album charted at No. 14 and "Back In Black" reappeared at No. 61.
