"I like going south. It's like going down the hill," that's what an old ent used to say. I don't know, in my much shorter life I've found out that every direction's allright if the view is nice. Going north here...

Over a year ago, drought or not, the Garden was rich with flowers and I was opening up to more artistic photos of ... of all things, leaves of succulents. One particular Echeverea caught my eye, and I may have taken the two best shots of a decade.

The other (flic.kr/p/2nEd8ci) image I posted about three weeks ago. It was a period after a super spring bloom, and it took me a while to realize that the drought had had an effect on the Garden as a whole. Flowers that were blossoming all last summer were nowhere to be seen, and the Echeverea of last year had given way to some "alien" (to me) forms.

Other circumstances (two heat waves for example) happened which curtailed some visits to the garden, and so I went back to my archives and started concentrating on a resurgence of insects. Who knows what direction(s) I may take or have to take, but I've always been flexible in my photographic pursuits.

Meanwhile, before posting more flowers, plants, insects, and birds from yesteryear or even yesterweek, let me show you my other "work of art!"

All long the beach both direction's there are people and pet's hidden the driftwood. In this section there are at least 3 people and 1 dog that are hiding from the wind. This is from Richmond Beach Northwest to Whidby Island in the Puget Sound.

Rainbow in my eye

And I'll be gone, gone tonight. The ground beneath my feet is open wide, the way that I've been holding on too tight- with nothing in between. The story of my life, I take her home, I drive all night to keep her warm. And time... is frozen. The story of my life, I give her hope.

I spend her love, until she's broke inside.

It has been much too long since I have taken a conceptual photo. Not even just weeks, months. I have had this idea, having a penny dress for some time now. I originally shot this and was going to have jars floating around her, with money in it... but I ended up not liking that so added snow instead :)

I have to give my hats off to Jenessa, who is such a beautiful person inside and out. She froze her butt off in this dress in negative degree weather and was the one that suggested holding an empty jar. She was such a trooper! We stayed in the parking garage for about an hour after just talking- she really is so lovely :)

The idea was inspired by One Direction's song "Story Of My Life" ... I am sure all of you have heard it by now, it is on the radio, I believe, if for some reason you haven't, go give it a listen.

Following a long and interesting Nikon Z50 promotional event in London I thought before I headed home I'd have an early evening walk round Soho. It occurred to me I've thousands of photos of London but very few of this part of town, particularly after dark when arguably it looks its best.

Given the area's reputation for being the centre of the capital's adult entertainment industry, it's easy to imagine something less than salubrious. But this is about frozen yoghurt.

The couple are the founders of Snog, a small chain of "fro yo" shops, which entices its customers with cheeky catchphrases such as "Less talk, more Snogging", "You'll never forget your first Snog" and "What could be more natural than a Snog?".

Their shops, furnished pop-art style in iridescent colours with rounded cartoon-like furniture, have attracted famous fans ranging from the Duchess of Cambridge to One Direction's Harry Styles."

Finally getting a lucky break in the clouds for once today, LNER Class 91/1 No.91121 is seen passing through Langford, Bedfordshire on the 13th of June 2020, working the 17:33 1D24 service from London’s Kings Cross to Leeds.

Thanks to JS for the direction’s.

Taken with the aid of a pole.

This abandoned house has an interesting grittiness and fascinating lines going every which way. About the only line that seems relatively straight is the extra long antenna.

The nature and direction(s) of the inevitable collapse(s) will be very interesting.

Stranger #69 – Tomek – I see him quite often as he works in our favourite vegan place in the centre of Wrocław, Poland. Today it struck me that his portrait would be a great addition to the project. So having spotted him sitting in front of said restaurant I approached him and asked for a photo. He agreed without any hesitation and any questions whatsoever, yet still I felt obliged to explain the purpose behind my actions. The light was very harsh today but fortunately there was a little shady spot next to the building. I took a few pictures and quickly realised that I initially opted for the wrong direction. Well, it happens during sunny days. Thankfully, the opposite direction’s background was much more uniformly lit. After taking a significant number of shots I was sure I got something awesome and I think I wasn’t mistaken ;)

The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London, linking Bankside with the City of London. It is owned and maintained by Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. Construction began in 1998, and it initially opened in June 2000.

Londoners nicknamed it the "Wobbly Bridge" after pedestrians experienced an alarming swaying motion on its opening day. The bridge was closed later that day and, after two days of limited access, it was closed again for almost two years so that modifications and repairs could be made to keep the bridge stable and stop the swaying motion. It reopened in February 2002.

The bridge is located between Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge. Its southern end is near the Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery, and Tate Modern, while its northern end is next to the City of London School below St Paul's Cathedral. The bridge's alignment is such that a clear view (i.e. a "terminating vista") of St Paul's south façade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge supports.

The design of the bridge was the subject of a competition organised in 1996 by Southwark council and RIBA Competitions. The winning entry was an innovative "blade of light" effort from Arup Group, Foster and Partners, and Sir Anthony Caro. Due to height restrictions, and to improve the view, the bridge's suspension design had the supporting cables below the deck level, giving a very shallow profile. The bridge has two river piers and is made of three main sections of 81 m (266 ft), 144 m (472 ft), and 108 m (354 ft) (north to south) with a total structure length of 325 m (1,066 ft); the aluminium deck is 4 m (13 ft) wide. The eight suspension cables are tensioned to pull with a force of 2,000 tons against the piers set into each bank—enough to support a working load of 5,000 people on the bridge at one time.

Ordinarily, bridges across the River Thames require an Act of Parliament. For this bridge, that was avoided by the Port of London Authority granting a licence for the structure, and the City of London and London Borough of Southwark granting planning permission. Construction began in late 1998 and the main works were started on 28 April 1999 by Monberg & Thorsen and Sir Robert McAlpine. The bridge was completed at a cost of £18.2 million (£2.2M over budget), primarily paid for by the Millennium Commission and the London Bridge Trust.

The bridge opened on 10 June 2000, two months late.

Unexpected lateral vibration due to resonant structural response caused the bridge to be closed on 12 June for modifications. Attempts had been made to limit the number of people crossing the bridge, which led to long queues but were ineffective to dampen the vibrations. Closure of the bridge only two days after opening attracted public criticism as another high-profile British Millennium project that suffered an embarrassing setback, akin to how many saw the Millennium Dome.

Vibration was attributed to an under-researched phenomenon whereby pedestrians crossing a bridge that has a lateral sway have an unconscious tendency to match their footsteps to the sway, exacerbating it. The tendency of a suspension bridge to sway vertically when troops march over it in step was well known, which is why troops are required to break step when crossing such a bridge. An example is London's Albert Bridge, which has a sign dating from 1873 warning marching ranks of soldiers to break step while crossing.

The bridge's movements were caused by a 'positive feedback' phenomenon, known as synchronous lateral excitation. The natural sway motion of people walking caused small sideways oscillations in the bridge, which in turn caused people on the bridge to sway in step, increasing the amplitude of the bridge oscillations and continually reinforcing the effect; the maximum sway was around 70mm. On the day of opening, the bridge was crossed by 90,000 people, with up to 2,000 on the bridge at any one time.

Resonant vibrational modes due to vertical loads (such as trains, traffic or pedestrians) and wind loads are well understood in bridge design. In the case of the Millennium Bridge, because the lateral motion caused pedestrians to directly participate with the bridge, the vibrational modes had not been anticipated by the designers. When the bridge lurches to one side, the pedestrians must adjust to keep from falling over, and they all do this at the same time. The effect is similar to soldiers marching in lockstep, but horizontal instead of vertical.

The risks of lateral vibration in lightweight bridges are well known. Any bridge with lateral frequency modes of less than 1.3 Hz, and sufficiently low mass, could witness the same phenomenon with sufficient pedestrian loading. The greater the number of people, the greater the amplitude of the vibrations. Other bridges which have seen similar problems are:

Auckland Harbour Bridge, with a lateral frequency of 0.67 Hz during a 1975 demonstration

Birmingham NEC Link bridge, with a lateral frequency of 0.7 Hz

Engineers at Arup, the company that designed the bridge, conducted research into the unexpected oscillation which they called 'synchronous lateral excitation'. The first laboratory studies used pedestrians on moving platforms at the University of Southampton and Imperial College London. Later in 2000, one span of the bridge was instrumented and tested with crowds of up to 275 people.

They concluded that making the bridge stiffer, to move its resonant frequency out of the excitation range, was not feasible as it would greatly change its appearance. Instead, the resonance was controlled by retrofitting 37 viscous fluid dampers to dissipate energy. These include 17 chevron dampers – long V-shaped braces under the deck panels – to control lateral movement, 4 vertical to ground dampers to control lateral and vertical movements, and 16 pier dampers to control lateral and torsional movements. Additionally, 52 tuned mass dampers add inertia to control vertical movement. The work took from May 2001 to January 2002 and cost £5M. After a period of testing, the bridge was reopened on 22 February 2002 and has not been subject to significant vibration since. In spite of the successful cure, the affectionate "wobbly bridge" (sometimes "wibbly-wobbly") epithet remains in common usage among Londoners.

An artistic expression of the higher-frequency resonances within the cables of the bridge were explored by Bill Fontana's 'Harmonic Bridge' exhibition at the Tate Modern museum in mid-2006. This used acoustic transducers placed at strategic locations on the cabling of the Millennium Bridge and the signals from those transducers were amplified and dynamically distributed throughout the Turbine Hall of the Tate by a programme which Fontana entered into the sound diffusion engine of the Richmond Sound Design AudioBox.

We took along a copy of Maui Revealed on our trip to the island. It was full of all sorts of helpful hints and tips for the traveling photographer. For example, the day we drove around to Hana I was perusing the book and noticed a mention about some lava tubes that could be found if you kept your eyes peeled. Naturally, they had me at lava... so we followed the book's direction's and found the pullout along the road and sure enough there were a couple of Owen-sized holes in the opposite hillside. And I really do mean Owen-sized - the first cave in both height and depth. After I clambered into it and found that I couldn't go far at all, I called Owen over to take a look. He wasn't quite certain he wanted to go in himself, but he was happy enough to pose in the entrance while I snapped this photo of him.

I'll have to tell you the rest of the story tomorrow, work beckons.

One Direction's new album out today, thanks mum, can't wait to listen to this.

One Direction are an English-Irish boy band formed in London in 2010, consisting of members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after being formed and finishing third in the seventh series of British television music competition The X Factor. They subsequently signed in North America with Columbia Records.

The release of One Direction's debut studio album Up All Night (2011) established their international breakthrough. The album was a commercial success that topped charts worldwide and marked the first time a debut album by a British group had bowed at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. They were inducted into the Guinness World Records as a result. The album yielded the international chart-topping single "What Makes You Beautiful" and was supported by the Up All Night Tour. Preceded by the record-breaking lead single "Live While We're Young", the group's second studio album Take Me Home was released in November 2012. The accompanying 2013 World Tour is set to begin in February 2013, with tickets grossing US$15.7 million for their Australian and New Zealand dates.

One Direction have been described as sparking the resurgence in the boy band concept, and of forming part of a new "British Invasion" in the United States. As of August 2012, One Direction have sold over 12 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide. Their achievements include a BRIT Award and 3 MTV Video Music Awards. Generating through combined music, merchandising, and touring sales, as of June 2012, according to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction represent an US$50 million business empire. The Huffington Post proclaimed 2012 "The Year of One Direction"

Electronic dance music producer and award-winning DJ Steve Aoki built his brand around raucous live sets, high-profile remixes and collaborations, and his indie label, Dim Mak Records. His official debut album, Wonderland, received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2013, while subsequent releases remained a steady presence in the U.S. Dance chart Top Five, including a pair of chart-toppers with Neon Future, Vol. 1 (2014) and Neon Future, Vol. 3 (2018).

Born in Miami in 1977, Steven Hiroyuki Aoki grew up in California -- the Japanese-American son of former wrestler and restauranteur Rocky Aoki -- where he balanced academics, athletics, and social activism with his love of music, double-majoring at University of California, Santa Barbara while also playing secret shows from his college apartment. In 1996, Aoki took his D.I.Y. record production hobby and made it official with the formation of indie label Dim Mak Records. Dim Mak went on to count indie bands and electronic acts such as Gossip, Bloc Party, the Kills, Klaxons, MSTRKRFT, and Bloody Beetroots among its stable of signees. On the side, Aoki continued to perform in bands and solo sets.

Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles

In 2007, he released his first official compilation CD, Pillowface & His Airplane Chronicles, on Thrive Records. Featuring tracks by Justice, Klaxons, Mystery Jets, Peaches, Datarock, Yelle, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and Scanners -- most of them remixed -- Pillowface & His Airplane Chronicles represented Aoki's renown as a taste-making dance party DJ. The mix peaked in the Top Ten of the U.S. Dance chart.

In 2009 his remix work brought rapper Drake's single "Forever" to the dancefloor, while 2010 saw him release the "I'm in the House" single with Zuper Blahq, alter ego of Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am. Further high-profile artists' material was also reworked by Aoki during this period, with tracks by Michael Jackson, the Killers, and Lenny Kravitz all benefiting, while collaborations with like-minded producers such as Armand van Helden and the Bloody Beetroots continued to appear on Dim Mak. By the end of 2011, the early fruits of sessions for his debut album had materialized as the singles "Earthquakey People" -- a collaboration with Weezer singer Rivers Cuomo -- and "Tornado," on which Aoki combined forces with the multi-award-winning Tiësto. Wonderland arrived in early 2012 and marked Aoki's first appearance on the Billboard 200. The album was later nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

In late 2012, he released his first EP, It's the End of the World as We Know It. More collaborations followed, including a single between Aoki and Linkin Park titled "A Light That Never Comes," which was expanded as an EP featuring remixes by Rick Rubin, Vicetone, Coone. The track became Aoki's highest-charting single to date.

Neon Future, Vol. 2

In 2014, he announced details of his sophomore effort, Neon Future, Vol. 1. Marketed as a two-part record, the first installment arrived later in the year, topping the Billboard Dance chart with the help of guests such as Fall Out Boy, will.i.am, and Waka Flocka Flame. Neon Future, Vol. 2 followed in 2015 with appearances from Rivers Cuomo, Snoop Dogg, and J.J. Abrams. The next year, Aoki collaborated with One Direction's Louis Tomlinson on the single "Just Hold On," which debuted at number two on the U.K. singles chart and just outside the Top 50 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Aoki's fourth effort arrived in the summer of 2017. Kolony featured appearances by trap rappers Migos and Lil Yachty ("Night Call"), Gucci Mane ("Lit"), Lil Uzi Vert ("Been Balling"), and 2 Chainz ("Without You"). The next year, Aoki released the single "Azukita" with Daddy Yankee, Play N Skillz, and Elvis Crespo. He followed with a quintet of big-bass, high-energy singles -- featuring guests Hardwell, Laidback Luke, Loopers, and even his mother -- which all landed on the 5OKI EP. 2018 continued to be a busy year for Aoki, with collaborations (including "Pretender" with Lil Yachty and AJR and "Be Somebody" with Nicky Romero and Kiiara) and remixes (including the star-studded "Girls" by Rita Ora, Cardi B, Bebe Rexha, and Charli XCX) occupying much of his output. He was also featured on a pair of tracks on the record-breaking Love Yourself: Answer by K-pop group BTS, lending his talents to the ballad "The Truth Untold" and a remix of "MIC Drop." A third BTS pairing, "Waste It on Me," was just one of many high-profile collaborations on Aoki's chart-topping Neon Future, Vol. 3. Landing at the end of 2018, the third installment in the series included appearances from blink-182, Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins, Lady Antebellum, Daddy Yankee, and even Bill Nye "the science guy."

A birthday cake based on One Direction's logo.
