Justice Crew And Johnny Ruffo Support One Direction; Hordern Pavilion, Moore Park, Sydney, Australia

Today One Direction mania broke loose at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, but credit where its due to both Justice Crew and Johnny Ruffo for adding extra substance to the style with today's young hunk musical performances.

Friday 13th was lucky for about 3,000 Australian fans who got into the venue, and we think Justice Crew and Mr Ruffo helped British boy band One Direction make some of their own luck.

There were lots of smiles all around and body language directed at the teen girl audience to send them into swoon mania.

When JC and Ruffo had done their thing, it was time for the Main Event - One Direction, and they didn't disappoint (the teen fans that were falling over themselves even before the show began).

One Direction - fans attention in One Direction daze globally...

One Direction performed also their hit single What Makes You Beautiful on the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, which resulted in a star-studded audience sing-a-long.

One Direction’s debut album, Up All Night, entered the charts at No.1 in 13 countries and has been certified triple platinum in Ireland, double platinum in the UK and Australia, and platinum in New Zealand. In six months they have sold more than 4.2 million records worldwide.

Well Wishes To All Artists...

We wish all of the performing artists well with their developing careers, and they shouldn't need too much luck, with all the airplay they are currently enjoying on Sydney, Melborne and Brisbane FM radio. That's showbiz.

Australian media, marketing and music industry experts will be watching and listening closely, as all three of today's musical entities continue to strive to reach the top of the charts.

Will the boy bands stay together, or should we expect a break up or break out performer, sooner, or later - stay tuned to this station.

5 Seconds of Summer were One Direction's support act

June 11, 2013: After spending 24 hours on a 2 million dollar yacht, One Direction's Harry Styles and Niall Horan greet fans waiting for them at the dock in Miami, FL. One fan was a little over eager to plant a kiss on Harry's cheek, but when Harry saw a fan in a wheelchair with multiple sclerosis, he was the one who handed out a kiss to her. Sony Music and Syco Music commissioned Fluid to create the global campaign identity for the launch of boy-band One Direction's second album 'Take Me Home'. The sleeve designs for the aforementioned album and single 'Live While We're Young', utilised the photography of John Urbano, as did the design of the scrap-book style collectors edition which featured an Augmented Reality picture book.

Fluid also used digital initiatives and teamed up with Incremental to build momentum pre-release, with an online countdown calendar, releasing new content daily in an advent calendar style. This existed in tandem with a digital 1D Postbox where fans could post messages to be read out on a scheduled date by the boys. It was also a privilege for Fluid to be asked to get involved with 1D's comic relief single for charity, 'One Way or Another' which featured photography from John Wright.

One Direction's headlining gig Monday night at Madison Square Garden, the British boy band's first, was less of a proper concert and more of a victory lap from a banner year. A 90-minute plus set of the boys singing their hits as well as fan favorites like "Tell Me A Lie," "Kiss You" and "Save You Tonight," the show felt "almost like the biggest showcase you've ever been to last night," Rob Stringer, chairman-CEO of Columbia Records said the morning after.

The show also doubled as a prelude to One Direction's fan convention in New Jersey Tuesday, where fans from more than 35 countries around the world were flown in as part of a Golden Ticket package. To those fans as well as the thousands of screaming girls from all over the tri-state area, Monday's show was as intimate as a sold-out gig at Madison Square Garden could get. The low-key stage was outfitted with an extensive runway that allowed the boys to high-five the crowd and serenade fans directly from all corners. Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn and Niall even sat down at the stage's edge at one point to sing "Little Things," their current, acoustic single -- complete with co-writer Ed Sheeran, who also opened the show.

Further contributing to the night's interactive vibe was a mid-show Twitter Q&A, where the band answered questions that ranged from the ear-piercing ("Who has the loudest section?" Answer: Niall) to the athletic ("Who can jump the highest?" Answer: Zayn, who cheated by jumping atop a runway) to the silly ("Who can cluck like a chicken?" Answer: Harry, who does an impressive poultry impression). All the excitement made the crowd's collective screams come in waves, so loud and layered that it occasionally sounded like a legion of locusts as much as it did pubescent girls.

Although much of One Direction's success is due to the combination of their "X Factor" exposure in the UK, their good looks and their savvy ability to harness social media, it's easy to overlook that many of their songs are actually quite solid. As written by the trio of Swedes Carl Falk, Rami Yacoub and Savan Kotecha, two Swedes and an American, pop anthems "Live While We're Young," "One Thing" and the massive "What Makes You Beautiful" are designed to bounce off stadium walls. Kelly Clarkson-penned rocker "Tell Me A Lie" is particularly strong live in a more minor key that recalls "Since U Been Gone," and "Little Things" is an ideal choice for their first sensitive ballad to be released as a single in the States -- complete with racy-when-you-think-about-them lyrics about memorizing the dimples in a girl's lower back. Even if the boys themselves don't do any of the dance moves like the late-90s Backstreet Boys/'N Sync movement that preceded them, the emphasis on live vocals only benefits them (particularly the melismatic chops of the under-rated Louis) and doesn't even bring concerns of lip-syncing.

And in case Madison Square Garden had had its fill of squealing for the week, the venue was only warming up for what is sure to be the loudest event of the year -- Z100's Jingle Ball on Friday, featuring performances from 1D, Sheeran, Taylor Swift, fun., The Wanted, Cher Lloyd, Olly Murs and the one act whose fans could out-shriek 1D's -- Justin Bieber.

From Wikipedia:

An armillary sphere (variations are known as spherical astrolabe, armilla, or armil) is a model of objects in the sky (in the celestial sphere), consisting of a spherical framework of rings, centred on Earth, that represent lines of celestial longitude and latitude and other astronomically important features such as the ecliptic. As such, it differs from a celestial globe, which is a smooth sphere whose principal purpose is to map the constellations.

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no publisher's name which was posted in Battersea on Saturday the 18th. August 1906 to:

Mrs. Wood,

Hornshill,

Slimbridge,

Nr. Stonehouse,

Gloucester

The message on the back of the card was as follows:

"Dear Flo,

I arrived home quite safe,

Father met me at

Westbourne Park.

I will write a letter soon.

With kind love to you and

Charlie.

From Rose".

Battersea Park

Battersea Park is a 200-acre (83-hectare) green space at Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth in London. It is situated on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Chelsea, and was opened in 1858.

The park occupies marshland reclaimed from the Thames as well as land formerly used for market gardens.

The park is Grade II* listed.

-- The Early Years of the Park

Prior to 1846 the area now covered by the park was known as Battersea fields, a popular spot for duelling. On the 21st. March 1829, the Duke of Wellington and the Earl of Winchelsea met on Battersea fields to settle a matter of honour. When it came time to fire, the Duke aimed his duelling pistol wide and Winchelsea fired his into the air. Winchelsea later wrote the Duke a groveling apology.

Separated from the river by a narrow raised causeway, the fields consisted of low, fertile marshes intersected by streams and ditches, with the chief crops being carrots, melons, lavender (all the way up to Lavender Hill) and the famous ‘Battersea Bunches’ of asparagus.

Running along the riverside from the fields were industrial concerns and wharves, including a pottery, copper works, lime kiln, chemical works, and, increasingly, railways. The site of Battersea Power Station was partly occupied by the famously bawdy Red House Tavern, patronised by Charles Dickens.

In 1845, spurred partly by the local vicar and partly by Thomas Cubitt, the builder and developer, whose yards were across the river in the still marshy and undeveloped area of Pimlico, a bill was submitted to Parliament to form a royal park of 320 acres.

The Act was passed in 1846, and £200,000 was promised for the purchase of the land. The Commission for Improving the Metropolis acquired 320 acres of Battersea Fields, of which 198 acres became Battersea Park, opened in 1858, and the remainder was let on building leases.

The park was laid out by Sir James Pennethorne between 1846 and 1864, although the park which was opened in 1858 varied somewhat from Pennethorne's original vision.

The park’s success depended on the successful completion of the Chelsea Bridge, declared open in 1858 by Queen Victoria. In her honour, the road alongside the eastern edge of the Park was called Victoria Road, linked to Queen's Road by Victoria Circus (now Queen's Circus).

Prince of Wales Road (now Prince of Wales Drive) was laid out along the southern boundary, and Albert Bridge Road constructed along the western side. The park came under the management of the newly formed London County Council in 1889.

The park hosted the first football game played under the rules of the recently formed Football Association on the 9th. January 1864. The members of the teams were chosen by the President of the FA (A. Pember) and the Secretary (E.C. Morley), and included many well-known footballers of the day.

From the 1860's, the park was home to the leading amateur football team Wanderers F.C., winners of the first FA Cup, in 1872. One team they are known to have played at the park was Sheffield F.C., the world's oldest football team, in the 1860's.

-- The Later Years of Battersea Park

In 1924, the 24th East Surrey Division War Memorial by Eric Kennington was unveiled by Field Marshal Lord Plumer and the Anglican Bishop of Southwark Cyril Garbett. It commemorates the over 10,000 men killed or listed as "missing presumed dead" whilst serving with the 24th. East Surrey Division. The memorial is now Grade II* listed.

During both wars, anti-aircraft guns and barrage balloons were installed in the park to help protect London from enemy air raids. Shelters were dug, part of the park was turned over to allotments for much needed vegetables, and a pig farm was also set up. Maintenance of the park was reduced as the war effort took priority.

In 1951 the northern parts of the park were transformed into the "Pleasure Gardens" as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. As well as a new water-garden and fountains, new features included a "Tree-Walk", which consisted of a series of raised wooden walkways linked by tree house-like platforms suspended between the branches of a number of trees.

Popular attractions included the Guinness Clock, designed by Jan Le Witt and George Him, and the Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Branch Railway.

-- Battersea Funfair and the Big Dipper Disaster

Another part of the transformation was the addition in 1951 of Battersea Funfair, with roller coasters, swings, roundabouts and other attractions.

The funfair's most spectacular ride was a roller coaster called The Big Dipper, which opened in 1951. It was of wooden construction, and suffered a major fire in 1970.

It was closed after five children were killed and 13 injured in an accident on the 30th. May 1972 when one of the trains broke loose from its haulage rope, rolling backwards, the emergency rollback brake having failed.

Despite the efforts of the brakeman, the train gathered speed, and the back carriage jumped the rails and crashed through a barrier, with the other two carriages crashing on top of it.

It was the worst accident in the history of theme parks. In the subsequent inquiry, prosecutors described the ride as a 'death trap', citing dozens of flaws and safety concerns.

The Independent newspaper published a story in 2015 recalling the accident, prompted by an accident at Alton Towers in which 16 people were injured, four seriously. Recalling the 1972 accident, Carolyn Adamczyk, a passenger on the ride during the accident, said:

"As soon as we started shooting backwards,

everything went into slow motion... I turned

around and saw the brake man desperately

trying to put the brake on, but it wasn’t working.

Most of the carriages didn’t go around the bend,

one detached and went off the side through a

wooden hoarding. People were groaning and

hanging over the edge. It was awful."

In April 2022 BBC News published a video article about survivors of the disaster campaigning for a permanent memorial. The footage includes the rollercoaster in operation as well as modern views of the site where it stood, and mentions a theory that the wood from the demolished coaster is buried under Battersea Park.

Three men were charged with manslaughter, and a committal hearing was started at Wandsworth Magistrates' Court on the 26th. February 1973. The court heard that, after a fire had damaged the ride in 1970, second-hand stock, more than fifty years old, had been bought to replace it.

The brake on the replacement train had not operated when the rope broke, allowing it to run backwards. Additionally, the structure, including the pedestrian emergency walkway, was in a rotted and unsafe condition so that one victim who survived the initial impact fell through the handrail to her death.

The manager of the ride and its inspecting engineer were committed for trial, and after a lengthy hearing at the Old Bailey, on the 20th. November 1973 both men were acquitted.

After the accident, the roller coaster was closed and dismantled. With the funfair's lack of a main attraction its use soon declined, leading to its closure in 1974. Very little remains now to even suggest that a funfair once stood on the site.

-- Other Features of Battersea Park

The site of the fun fair was levelled and became a site for travelling fairs and exhibitions, and is the site of Battersea Evolution, formerly the Battersea Park Events Arena, which hosts exhibitions, conferences and Christmas parties.

The park is home to a small children's zoo, a boating lake, a bandstand, and all-weather outdoor sporting facilities including tennis courts, a running track and football pitches. Four West London hockey teams use the all-weather Astroturf pitches.

In the centre of the park is Pump House Gallery, which is housed in a four-story grade I listed Victorian tower. It is owned by Wandsworth Council.

On the western side there are two cricket pitches, home to the King's Road Cricket & Social Club. The club, whose members wear distinctive orange caps, can be seen playing on Saturdays and Sundays.

The park is the site of the London Peace Pagoda, erected in 1985. A Buddhist monk looks after the pagoda on a daily basis.

A replica of the bronze statue of a dog that was the focal point of the historic vivisection-related Brown Dog affair was erected here in 1985. It was moved in 1994 to the Woodland Walk, near the Old English Garden.

In 2002 to 2004 the park underwent a £11 million refurbishment funded in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and was re-opened on the 2nd. June 2004 by Prince Philip.

In 2007, a Dog Walk of Fame was inaugurated in the park.

In 2011, a sculpture commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, 'After 9/11', was unveiled by the then-Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

A narrow strip along the eastern edge of the park and two smaller nearby areas have been designated the Battersea Park Nature Areas Local Nature Reserve, with an area of three hectares. They have a variety of woodland bird species, including blackcap and bullfinch. There are 20 species of butterfly and several of stag beetle.

-- Battersea Park in the Media

The park featured in Petula Clark's 1954 single "Meet Me In Battersea Park", co-authored by Clark's father, Leslie, and her accompanist, Joe "Mr Piano" Henderson and David Valentine (the pen name of David Lavender). It was the title of a 2001 boxed set focusing on this early part of Petula's career.

The park featured in the 1960's films "Gorgo", "The Wrong Arm of the Law" and "The Day the Earth Caught Fire", and in a 1991 episode of Mr. Bean entitled "Mr Bean Goes to Town". Also, Jim Henson's company filmed the musical number "Couldn't We Ride?" for "The Great Muppet Caper" at the park; it was there that the movie began filming in September 1980.

The cafe and bandstand featured in several scenes shot for the 1998 British comedy "Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence".

The first 50 seconds of the video for One Direction's single "One Thing" were filmed in the former Festival Gardens area of the park.

Alexander Löhr

So what else happened on the day that Rose posted the card to Flo?

Well, on the 18th. August 1906, Alexander Löhr graduated from the military academy.

Löhr, who was born on the 20th. May 1885, was an Austrian Air Force commander during the 1930's and, after the annexation of Austria, he was a Luftwaffe commander.

Löhr served in the Luftwaffe during World War II, rising to commander of Army Group E, and then to commander-in-chief in Southeastern Europe.

Löhr was captured by Yugoslav Partisans at the end of the war in Europe. He was tried and convicted of war crimes by the Yugoslav government for anti-partisan reprisals committed under his command, and for the bombing of Belgrade in 1941.

He was executed by firing squad on the 26th. February 1947 In Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

Alexander Löhr - The Early Years

Löhr was born in Turnu-Severin in the Kingdom of Romania. He was the youngest child of Friedrich Johann Löhr and his wife Catherine, née Heimann. His father had served as a 2nd. captain on a hospital ship in the Black Sea during the Russo-Turkish War. Here his father had met his mother, a Ukrainian nurse.

After the war they married and moved to Turnu-Severin in Romania. The marriage produced three sons. Alexander grew up speaking German, Russian, French and Romanian. He attended a military secondary school in Kaschau, present-day Košice in Slovakia until 1900.

Löhr transferred to the infantry cadet school at Temeswar, present-day Timișoara in Romania, in January 1900. In 1903 he was posted to Vienna, where he attended the Theresian Military Academy in Burg Wiener Neustadt until 1906.

Löhr graduated from the military academy on the 18th. August 1906, with an overall rating of "Very Good". On the same day he volunteered for active service. He served as platoon commander in the Austro-Hungarian Army in the Great War.

By 1921 Löhr had reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Between 1921 and 1934 he held many staff positions in the military, including Director of the Air Force in the Federal Armies Ministry. In 1934, he was made Commander of the small Austrian Air Force, a position which he held until the annexation in 1938.

World War II

On the 15th. March 1938, Löhr was transferred to the Luftwaffe, where he became commander of Luftwaffe forces in Austria. He was commander of Luftflotte 4 in the East from May 1939 until June 1942.

Luftflotte 4 carried out the bombing of Warsaw, Poland in September 1939 and of Belgrade, Yugoslavia in April 1941. Löhr developed a plan to bomb Belgrade with incendiary bombs first, so that the fires would help the second, nighttime, attack to find the targets. This cost thousands of people their lives. Löhr was promoted to colonel general effective 3rd. May 1941.

Commander-in-Chief South East

Löhr became Commander-in-Chief of the 12th. Army on the 3rd. July 1942, and on the 28th. December 1942 he was promoted to Commander-in-Chief in southeast Europe. In this role, Löhr controlled all subordinate commands in southeast Europe.

Löhr organised the fourth and fifth offensives against Yugoslav Partisans in 1943, during which most of those taken prisoner, including the wounded, were murdered on the spot.

Löhr oversaw the Dodecanese campaign. On the 26th. August 1944, with the Allies advancing on three fronts, Hitler ordered Löhr to begin evacuating Army Group E from Greece and move north to defend the Fatherland.

At the end of the war in Europe, Löhr received orders for unconditional surrender, but instead directed his forces to break out towards Austria.

Löhr was captured in Slovenia on the 9th. May 1945, and attempted to negotiate passage for his troops to Austria. This was refused, and Löhr was ordered to cease fighting.

He escaped, countermanded his order to surrender and continued with the breakout attempt. After an intense manhunt, Löhr was recaptured on the 13th. May 1945.

Löhr's Conviction and Execution

Löhr was imprisoned by Yugoslavia from the 15th. May 1945 until the 26th. February 1947. He was tried and convicted for war crimes committed during the anti-partisan operations of 1943, including the killing of hostages and the burning of villages, and also disregarding Germany's unconditional surrender.

He was executed by firing squad on the 26th. February 1947 in Belgrade. He was 61 years of age when he died.

This is just an icosahedron separated from a (cumulated) octahedron by a purple triangular prism. Weighing in at 30 + 12 + 3 = 45 units, the structure is unremarkable. I created it to answer a question that Coming_Curse had about connecting polyhedra. The context of the conversation was the simulation of molecular chains with modular origami; the octahedron at the end here could easily be hooked to seven more icosahedra depending on the direction(s) needed, and if those angles proved inadequate, the octahedron could be replaced by something else.

The coloring scheme chosen here is slightly more interesting to me than the geometry. I used 12 red units, 12 blue units, and 6 green units in the icosahedron in order to show off its inherent tetrahedral symmetry. If you can't see it, observe the positions and relative angles of the three blue triangles in the picture (one of which has a prism attached to it.) The final blue triangle is in the back. The four blue triangles and the four red triangles each lie in the face planes of opposite-pointing tetrahedra. The blue and red triangles together lie in the face planes of an octahedron, and the 6 remaining green edges lie in the face planes of a cube!

Since the snubification of a tetrahedron will result in this shape, the easiest way to remember the coloring pattern is by copying an existing picture of a snub tetrahedron. At least, that's how I did it.

We came back from lunch and on the door to the office was this cicadas.. his empty shell was also on the sidwalk.. so cool.

When I was trying to take his pic he flew, I screamed and I accidently stepped on his empty shell..

here is some info on the cicadas from wikipedia:

The adult insect, sometimes called an imago, is usually 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) long, although some tropical species can reach 15 cm (6 in), e.g. Pomponia imperatoria from Malaysia. Cicadas have prominent eyes set wide apart on the sides of the head, short antennae protruding between or in front of the eyes, and membranous front wings. Also, commonly overlooked, cicadas have 3 small eyes located on the top of the head between the two large eyes that match the color of the large eyes, giving them a total of five eyes. Desert cicadas are also among the few insects known to cool themselves by sweating,[3] while many other cicadas can voluntarily raise their body temperatures as much as 22 °C (72 °F) above ambient temperature.[4]

Male cicadas have loud noisemakers called "timbals" on the sides of the abdominal base. Their "singing" is not the stridulation (where two structures are rubbed against one another) of many other familiar sound-producing insects like crickets: the timbals are regions of the exoskeleton that are modified to form a complex membrane with thin, membranous portions and thickened "ribs". Contracting the internal timbal muscles produces a clicking sound as the timbals buckle inwards. As these muscles relax, the timbals return to their original position producing another click. The interior of the male abdomen is substantially hollow to amplify the resonance of the sound. A cicada rapidly vibrates these membranes, and enlarged chambers derived from the tracheae make its body serve as a resonance chamber, greatly amplifying the sound. They modulate their noise by wiggling their abdomens toward and away from the tree that they are on. Additionally, each species has its own distinctive song.[1]

Average temperature of the natural habitat for this species is approximately 29°C (84°F). During sound production the temperature of the tymbal muscles were found to be slightly higher.[5] Cicadas like heat and do their most spirited singing during the hotter hours of a summer day.

Although only males produce the cicadas' distinctive sound, both sexes have tympana, which are membranous structures used to detect sounds and thus the cicadas' equivalent of ears. Males can disable their own tympana while calling.[6]

Some cicadas produce sounds up to 120 dB (SPL)[6] "at close range", among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds.[7] Conversely, some small species have songs so high in pitch that the noise is inaudible to humans.[8] Species have different mating songs to ensure they attract the appropriate mate. It can be difficult to determine which direction(s) cicada song is coming from, because the low pitch carries well and because it may, in fact, be coming from many directions at once, as cicadas in various trees all make noise at once.

In addition to the mating song, many species also have a distinct distress call, usually a somewhat broken and erratic sound emitted when an individual is seized. A number of species also have a courtship song, which is often a quieter call and is produced after a female has been drawn by the calling song.

Discarded cicada skin.

After mating, the female cuts slits into the bark of a twig, and into these she deposits her eggs. She may do so repeatedly, until she has laid several hundred eggs. When the eggs hatch, the newborn nymphs drop to the ground, where they burrow. Most cicadas go through a life cycle that lasts from two to five years. Some species have much longer life cycles, e.g., such as the North American genus, Magicicada, which has a number of distinct "broods" that go through either a 17-year or, in the American South, a 13-year life cycle. These long life cycles both happen to be prime numbers, perhaps developed as a response to predators such as the cicada killer wasp and praying mantis.[9][10][11]. A predator with a shorter life cycle of at least 2 years could not reliably prey upon the cicadas.[12]

Cicadas live underground as nymphs for most of their lives, at depths ranging from about 30 cm (1 ft) up to 2.5 m (about 8½ ft). The nymphs feed on root juice and have strong front legs for digging.

In the final nymphal instar, they construct an exit tunnel to the surface and emerge. They then molt (shed their skins), on a nearby plant for the last time and emerge as adults. The abandoned skins remain, still clinging to the bark of trees
