On the Cape Peninsula of South Africa there is a remarkable colony of penguins living in the wild. From just two breeding pairs in 1982, the penguin colony has grown to about 3,000 birds in recent years. One used to be able to simply walk among them but now, to protect them, there are wooden walkways that allow good views without disturbing the birds.

No, not that one direction.
I've tried a similar shot before, I think they could both be bettered by quite a bit, but I'll keep coming back and keep trying, I'm sure there's a killer shot in here somewhere.
British boy band One Direction to play concert at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion

Today One Direction mania broke loose at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion.
It may have been Friday 13th, but 3,000 Australian fans got lucky to be part of the huge crowd that made up the enthusiastic audience.
The British boy band has teenage Aussie lasses screaming for more, with the occasional tear been shed for those who miss out on their deepest desires.
Hours before Harry, Niall, Liam, Zayn and Louis took the stage at the Hordern Pavilion, they were screaming in anticipation of seeing the Fab Five sing their hearts out.
The matinee show sold out two Sydney concerts in under three minutes kicked off at 3.45pm with an entirely appropriate teen anthem Na Na Na.
The performance was a slick mix of song, video, dance and audience participation.
The lads are well practiced at at working the crowd, with smiles all around, finger pointing and all that. In time its expected that many of the boys will further develop their vocal, dancing and even song writing prowless.
One Direction merchandise was selling fast, as you would expect, with young ladies parting with $40 for T-shirts, $20 bucks for a program.
Some not so lucky fans who couldn't get a ticket, despite strong rumours of on site scalpers, came to snatch up some merchandise at any price.
The place went nutso times 5 times 3000 when the boys played hits What Makes You Beautiful and One Thing. The teen fans hung on every word.
One Direction this afternoon jetted off to Melbourne to prepare for their Logies performances.
We wish the fab five well on their developing careers and hopefully female fans will only be shedding tears of joy, as the boys continue to send the lasses hormones in overdrive, as the media and marketing machine continues to give Australia an overdoes of One Direction.
Meanwhile Australian media and marketing experts wonder if or when the boys will be back to Australia for seconds, or if they will soon focus on offshore endeavours, having milked down under for all she was worth. Go for it boys.

A follow-up shot of Africa's largest eagle, the Martial Eagle, with nest-building material. This one lives wild and free, and was photographed against a blue kalahari sky in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Orcas, commonly referred to as “killer whales” and “wolves of the sea,” are noted for their pack-like hunting techniques that demonstrate intelligence and cunning with spectacular displays. They are a locally common sight in the Southern Ocean and often spotted during Antarctica cruises. Globally they have been known to feed on seals, fishes, squid, seabirds (including penguins) and other whale species, making the coastal zone of Antarctica a prime hunting ground.
Known as Orcinus orca in scientific literature and sometimes called simply orca, the largest members of the dolphin family are immediately distinguishable by their black and white pattern and by their size.
One of the most obvious characteristics that aids in the determination of whether or not one is seeing a male or a female is the shape of the dorsal fin, a field mark easily discernible from a ship. Male dorsals can be up to six feet long, one-fifth of their overall length, and are tall and erect. Female and juvenile dorsals tend to be falcate (curved back) and usually do not exceed three feet. The underside of the tail fluke is white. Characteristics used to identify individuals include variations of the dorsal fin, the eyepatch—a white spot of varying shape and orientation behind their eye, and the presence and/or shape of a dorsal cape. They have a fine, bushy, conspicuous blow that frequently signals their presence.
Exciting to watch, orcas have a behavioral repertoire seemingly made for shipboard viewing. Breaching—involving graceful leaps completely out of the water with thrilling re-entries, tail-slapping, spy-hopping and logging—whereby the entire group faces in the same direction in close proximity to each other—offer numerous opportunities to observe these striking animals in their environment.
